Aldi’s Pepperoni Pizza Wasn’t Anything Special

Peeling back the plastic to reveal Aldi’s pizza was both a letdown and a delight. There wasn’t much of the “real cheese” it advertised, but there were 19 thick slices of pepperoni.

Due to the thicker, heavier crust, it needed a little more time in the oven than its Lidl counterpart. When it was finally done, I was sad to see stringy, dry cheese and pools of pepperoni grease.

It reminded me of school-cafeteria pizza.

Another unappealing aspect was the sauce. It was thin, kind of watery, and lacked seasoning.

Even though the soft pepperoni had a sharp and pleasant flavor, the sweetness of the pizza base was the dominant taste.

How I Tested The Aldi Take

I rolled my cart to the refrigerator section of my local Aldi and loaded it with every take-and-bake pizza on the shelves. I also picked up pizza-adjacent products like the cheesy bread sticks and flatbreads. All in all, I had 12 pizzas in contention for Aldis best.

Note: Aldi also regularly releases limited-edition Aldi Finds pizza varieties, but because those flavors can be here one day and gone the next, they were not included in this taste test.

In order to taste each flavor at the same time , I cut generous slices from each pizza and arranged them on a rack over a baking sheet. Package instructions call for baking directly on the rack, but because I wasnt baking the whole pie, this seemed a safer bet to keep cheesy drips off of the bottom of my oven. The pizza slices were baked at the temperature specified on the box , according to the prescribed time range.

Lidl’s Cheese Pizza Promised A Brick

It’s a bold claim for any frozen pizza to call itself brick-oven style, but especially one as cheap as Lidl’s.

There was little more than a meager sprinkle of “100% real” mozzarella and Edam cheeses. And the little that was there was dried out and got stringy in the oven.

Through the many gaps, I could see a dark-red sauce over a very thin crust. But there were visible and plentiful dried herbs with the promise of flavor.

I could definitely taste the seasonings, but the solid, cracker-like crust was in the spotlight. It was slightly sweet in a good way, and it was crunchy and flat all the way through.

Reheated and topped with a little more sauce and cheese, it came out slightly soft in the center but still crispy.

This was a pretty good frozen pizza that was thoughtfully made, but ultimately, you get what you pay for.

Which Options Are Better Than Pizza From Aldi

Which grocery store has received positive attention for having yummy frozen pizzas? The Daily Meal ranked the Whole Foods 365 Thin Crust Four Cheese Pizza ninth, and Trader Giotto’s third out of 15 brands reviewed. The Kitchn had positive things to say about the Wegmans Bake & Rise Four Cheese Pizza, and the Trader Giotto’s Pizza 4 Formaggi. And for Taste of Home, the Whole Foods 365 Everyday Value Thin Crust Pepperoni Pizza was the best out of seven brands tested.

So in the end, while Aldi’s options are cheap and many are delicious, you’re better off getting your frozen pizza from another supermarket, or grabbing takeout from your favorite pizza place. After all, taste is king.

Mama Cozzis Take & Bake Pizzas

I sure do love the weird house brands ALDI comes up with. Appleton Farms. Clancyâs. And, of course, the most Italian of all names: Mama Cozziâs.

While you can find a few shelf-stable Mama Cozziâs items, most of this brandâs wares are in the freezer section.

But over with the other deli items, which are being marginally refrigerated, youâll find some take-and-bake pizzas of varying sizes, shapes, and ingredients.

Because I was feeding my kids, I opted for the extra-large Five Cheese pizza, which includes mozzarella, provolone, monterrey jack, parmesan, and romano cheeses, on a traditional crust.

Because I was also feeding myself, I also grabbed an extra-large Mega Meat pizza on thin crust. Mega Meat is not wall-to-wall meats, but I do appreciate its blend of basic and âpremiumââItalian sausage and pepperoni are given, but salami, bacon, and beef add some more heft and some extra spice.

Crust vs. crust, I have to take the thin crust. Itâs not quite cracker-thin, as some thin crusts go, but it was sturdy enough to hold all the toppings. Most importantly, the crust did its job and got out of the way of the cheese, toppings, and sauce.

Maybe that was the issue with the five-cheese pie: because the blend of cheeses, while pleasant, were not the grand distraction needed from the crust. The sauce is a bit one-note and the cheese didnât have enough oomph to give the sauce much to bounce off of.

Aldi’s store brand pizzas, under the private label Mama Cozzi, are tempting to add to your cart because they only cost a fraction of what you would normally pay for to-go pizza from any restaurant chain, or local pizzeria, at under $3. But ultimately, you get what you pay for. The frozen pizza reportedly lacks flavor and doesn’t have a lot of toppings .

Aldi’s pizza crusts are not super popular among some shoppers either. When the grocery store’s original pizza crusts were reviewed, the final opinion was that they were unremarkable, and added little to your pizza experience. Because the crusts are so thin and bland, the only flavor you’ll get are from your own toppings.

Because the main selling point for Aldi’s pizza is the price, not the taste, it’s not surprising that Mama Cozzi fell under the radar when major outlets have tasted and ranked their favorite frozen pizzas. Delish, The Daily Meal, Good Housekeeping, Taste of Home, and The Kitchn have all reviewed frozen pizzas within the past year or so. None of them have mentioned Aldi or Mama Cozzi in their rankings.

Mama Cozzis take-and-bake pizzas are convincingly good and, come January, youll be able to find three fun takes on the classic crust: cauliflower, gluten-free, and biscuit. And, also this stromboli! Made with pepperoni and mozzarella wrapped in dough, its something we can really get our hands around. Theres also a supreme version! Both are available on January 19.

Loven Fresh Pretzel Bites $499

We suggest you turn on the oven as soon as you get home, brush them with some melted butter, sprinkle with salt and heat them until warm. The Reason Aldi Shoppers Avoid Mama Cozzi’s Pizza

German grocery chain Aldi has a robust fan following, without a doubt. For many fans, the store offers an unbeatable combination of low prices and products high on quality. Blog I Ate Oklahoma tested the Five Cheese pizza and noted the blend of cheeses didn’t pack enough flavor to offset the traditional crust, while the sauce was described as “one note.” Likewise, the sauce and cheeses didn’t complement each other. Overall, the writer noted that Aldi pizza isn’t quite as good as the similarly cheap Hot-and-Ready from Little Caesars.

Aldi Reviewer confirms the “new recipe” is certainly an improvement on the previous variety, which notably wasn’t a hit with Aldi shoppers. The sausage pizza was passable, the cheese and sausage described as “competent” while the crust was “okay” if not as flaky as you’d expect. A Reddit user argued the crust is too thin, almost cracker-like, on the sausage pizza while the toppings simply tasted like salt. The main selling point across the board is the price so, if you’re mainly concerned with not paying too much, Mama Cozzi’s might suit. Otherwise, there are better supermarket frozen pizzas on the market.

Lidl’s Pizza Made Much More Of An Impression

Boasting fontina, smoked Gouda, and mozzarella in addition to the pork-and-beef pepperoni, Lidl’s pizza immediately felt more premium. The presence of little diced tomatoes and a sprinkling of Italian herbs added to that feel.

The crust was noticeably thinner than Mama Cozzi’s, and it ended up with much more of a cracker texture. It also came out with a lighter, softer layer of cheese it was one of the most luxurious melts of this taste test.

Along the outside of the cheese, there was some bubbling and the narrow-lipped crust got a little charred, which reminded me of brick-oven pizza parlors.

But even with the herbs and nice texture, the tomato sauce retained a little frozen flavor, and the pepperoni was only passably pleasing with an understated flavor.

Think Twice Before You Buy Pizza From Aldi

Aldi has a longstanding reputation for providing the best deals to its army of savvy shoppers, which goes some way towards explaining how the German grocer is taking over the U.S., Europe, and basically the entire planet. Aldi obsessives gather online to share their must-have items, fast finds, and everything in between. Those in the know get even better deals than regular shoppers, but regardless when you see that classic orange, yellow, and blue sign, you know your wallet is in safe hands.

Still, although Aldi is a one-stop shop for all kinds of family essentials, from dairy products to home goods, it’s not your go-to grocery destination for everything. Aldi’s Cheese Pizza Needed A Total Makeover To Be Enjoyable

Although it’s the most basic pizza flavor around, the three-pack box isn’t available at Aldi year round. I was wary of the “Try your own toppings” note on the box because I wasn’t sure it’d stand up on its own.

Out of the wrapper, it looked like Aldi might be onto something. There were globs of fresh mozzarella on the bubbly crust, and it was light on sauce and shredded cheese.

All the components were spaced out pretty consistently, but they weren’t centered on any of the pizzas, which left parts bare.

Once baked, the scarcity of the shredded cheese became less dire as the larger pieces melted down. But there was still a lot of naked crust.

The sauce was more of a garnish, but that ended up being a good thing because it was awful. There was an odd baby-food vibe to it, with confusing traces of artificial apricot and cheap herbs that made it taste like a candle.

The crust bubbled up and introduced a medley of textures. The cheese, however, felt doughy, which made the middle of the pie extra mushy.

The pizza wasn’t unsalvageable, though. It improved significantly after rebaking with better sauce and my own toppings.
