How These Baked Bbq Wings Are Made

As I mentioned above, this recipe starts off very similar to the extra crispy chicken wings recipe. However, instead of doing it at the end, I tossed the wings with the wing sauce about 10 minutes before the end. I just wanted the sauce to thicken a little. The sauce that I used that time was also slightly different it was a mix of Duffs BBQ sauce and their hot Buffalo wing sauce.

I also bumped the oven temperature up a little to get the wings cook faster it was a long day out on Saturday and we all wanted something as quickly as possible. These seemingly minor modifications gave me completely different results. The results were mind blowing if I do say so myself.

The best part is that it takes only about 30 minutes to bake these wings. Here is a little video of my daughter making them. Its very easy. I have since experimented more and modified the process slightly, so what you will find in the recipe below will differ a bit from the original video we made.

How To Make This Recipe

This recipe will come together in 40 minutes ready to be enjoyed as a meal or as part of an array of other amazing appetizers youve got on the go!

Step 1: Preheat the oven to 425 degrees and line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil. Place a wire rack on top.

Step 2: Pat the chicken wings dry and place them in a large bowl. Then, sprinkle the wings with flour, cornstarch, and salt. Toss to coat, and feel free to use your hands if need be. Latex gloves work well when working with raw chicken.

Step 3: As you place the wings onto the wire rack, shake off any excess flour. Arrange them in a single layer, leaving room between each one for even baking.

Step 4: Bake for 40 minutes, flipping halfway. While you wait, combine BBQ sauce, soy sauce, butter, and sriracha in a medium bowl. Whisk together well. You may need to give it another stir just before tossing the wings.

Step 5: Once baked, toss the wings in the sauce, making sure theyre all evenly coated. Return the wings to the wire rack and broil for 2-3 minutes until crispy and beautifully caramelized.

You Have To Gather Your Ingredients First

I categorized the ingredients into different parts for easy cooking: chicken and breading, glaze sauce and garnishes.

For the chicken wings, the small sizes are preferable but the bigger size chicken works fine too. If frozen, thaw them first and dry with a paper towel.

For the coating, you need flour, salt and pepper to taste plus cayenne or chili powder for an added savory kick.

When it comes to the bbq sauce, you can buy those bottled one. It does not matter what flavor. If using sweet and spicy bbq sauce, you may have to omit or reduce the hot sauce ingredient.

I have a list of homemade bbq sauce recipes you can check out if you want to make your own bbq sauce from scratch.

Since this is a sweet recipe, you need honey. Honey will add texture and color to your baked chicken wings recipe at the same time.

Dont forget the garlic powder to turn the flavor into the next level.

Air Fryer Method Notes

  • Depending on the size of your air fryer and the amount of chicken you are cooking, you may need to make this recipe in two batches.
  • If you are trying to cut down on the amount of oil you are using, you can spray the wings with a bit of spray oil instead of using half a tablespoon. I would still use a little bit of oil to ensure ultimate crispy-ness but chicken wings have a lot of natural fat so using a little less oil will still work!

How Do You Reheat Bbq Chicken Wings

Have leftover bbq wings? No worries! These are so easy to reheat and eat again.

  • Air Fryer: If you have an air fryer, you can easily pop a few wings back into the air fryer to reheat. If your air fryer has a reheat function you can use that or just air fry them again at 400 degrees for a few minutes until heated through.
  • Oven: Another great way to reheat bbq wings is in the oven. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees then place the wings on a sheet pan lined with parchment paper. Pop them in the oven and heat for a few minutes until hot and crispy. Once your wings are reheated you can toss them in a little more bbq sauce if you prefer.

I have found that the absolute worst way to reheat wings is in the microwave. They just do not have the same crispy-ness that you will get from an oven, air fryer, or toaster oven.

How To Make Bbq Baked Chicken Wings

The first step to making these baked bbq chicken wings is to put together a basic rub for the wings. Coating the wings in this homemade dry rub gives them a ton of extra flavor and will help to absorb the moisture on the wings, leading a crispier exterior.

For the rub, I combine chili powder, paprika, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Mix it all together and then rub it all over the wings.

Lay them out evenly on a baking sheet covered with parchment paper or tin foil. If you use tin foil, rub on a thin layer of oil or spray with non-stick cooking spray to keep the ribs from sticking.

Bake the wings for 15 minutes at 400° F . Flip them over and bake for another 15 minutes on the other side.

Take the tray from the oven and baste them with BBQ sauce. I like to use this homemade bourbon bbq sauce, but you can use whatever your favorite bbq sauce is. Brush the bbq sauce onto the top side of the wings.

Turn your oven to broil, with the top rack lowered to the 2nd row. This will help keep the splatter and flare ups to a minimum. Youll want to keep a close eye on the wings as they broil.

They only need about 3 minutes per side. Once one side begins to crackle and pop, remove the tray, turn the wings over, and slather the sauce on the other side of the wings. Broil again.

Once the wings have gotten a light char on each side, remove them from the oven and serve.
