What Pellets Should I Use For Smoking Baking Potatoes

Baked Potatoes On Pit Boss Pellet Grill

When it comes to baked potatoes on a pellet grill, the type of pellet you use wont make a huge difference. Applewood pellets, fruitwood pellets, and cherry grill pellets are always good choices when youre smoking any vegetable, but again, use whatever you have to hand. You can also mix and match your wood pellets if you cant decide on one flavor!

As with all cooking, though, its ultimately up to you and what type of flavor youre looking to give your smoked potatoes.

Why Use A Pellet Smoker

Unlike other cooking methods, a pellet smoker doesn’t require constant supervision. One important thing about using a pellet smoker is to keep the grill lid closed.

This allows your smoker to keep its internal temperature consistent, which leads to the best results. You just set the dial to the temperature you want and the smoker does its thing!

How To Make Smoked Baked Potatoes

  • Prep potatoes: first, run your russet potatoes under cold water. And then remove any residue using a paper towel.
  • Season: next, rub potatoes with olive oil and then generously season with salt and pepper. Then, poke a few holes in each potato using a fork.
  • Smoke: smoke potatoes at 275ºF for around 2-2.5 hours . Flip them after around 1 hour. You know the potatoes are done when they are fork tender.

    Grilled Baked Potatoes In Foil

When grilling baked potatoes, I recommend wrapping them in heavy duty foil before placing them on the grill. Cooking your grilled baked potatoes in foil helps the potatoes slowly rise in temperature and allows each potato to evenly cook.

I cannot place enough emphasis on using a good heavy duty foil while grilling these potatoes. Heavy duty foil doesnt split or rip while wrapping or cooking, so you dont run the risk of anything seeping out while your food is on the grill. If you dont have any heavy duty foil on hand, you can lay out 2 layers of regular foil to increase the strength.

Do You Flip Potatoes On A Pellet Grill

Baked Potato on a Pellet Grill: How to Cook to Perfection (2020 ...

No, you can put the potatoes directly on the grates and let them bake until they are done without rolling or flipping them.

However, I always roll mine, because I like to get grill marks on the skin. It works sometimes, but not always. Just remember, let the potatoes cook, and dont open the lid often.

Every time you open the lid, it causes the grills temperature to drop, which adds more cooking time.

    Why Smoked Baked Potatoes

Potatoes taste great when made on the smoker.

Whether its our famous smoked potato salad, smoked sweet potatoes with butter and brown sugar, or the classic smoked twice baked potatoes, they almost always come out great!

And the best part is they are super easy to make, especially these smoked baked potatoes.

You can throw them on the grill or smoker right alongside your chicken, smoked rump roast, or even some baby back ribs.

What Should I Top My Baked Potato With

Toppings are an important part of the baked potato! I like my baked potato pretty simple, salt and pepper topped with butter. The butter and seasoning add just a little flavor and creaminess to the already soft potato. For those who are feeling a bit more adventurous, here are some other ideas to top your baked potato.

    • Butter – all these really need is a pat of butter
    • Sour Cream – classic potato topping because the creamy tang pairs perfectly
    • Crispy bacon bits – we always serve bacon crumbles with a potato bar when we set one up for dinner parties
    • Shredded Cheese – try parmesan, cheddar, Monterey Jack for a little heat, or any kind you like!
    • Plain Greek Yogurt – we are sour cream lovers in this house but if we are out Greek yogurt is a good sub
    • Chives – we grow chives in our garden and they are definitely a family favorite, green onions have a similar flavor
    • Spices – a little onion powder or garlic powder sprinkled on top is delicious
    • Shredded BBQ Pork – oh yes, turn this into an entire meal by topping with some pulled pork
    • Smoked Cream Cheese – sounds a little crazy but this is phenomenal!

It is hard to choose the wrong topping for your baked potato. The possibilities are endless. When I cook these for my family or friends I like to put out a few different options so everyone can personalize their potato. Sometimes conversations even ensue over the “right” way to top your potato.

What Type Of Potato Works Best

Smoked Twice Baked Potatoes (3 Ways) on Pit Boss Pellet Grill

Though they all have great qualities that make them delicious and useful in their way, not all potatoes are created equally. Potatoes fall into one of two categories, starchy or waxy, but in the middle, we have Yukon Gold. Yukon Gold potatoes have a medium starch content that makes them versatile for various types of cooking. These all-purpose potatoes are firm but moist and have a rich flavor.

Long story short, Yukon Gold potatoes work best for this recipe. Russet potatoes are a great second choice.

Why Should I Smoke My Baked Potatoes

First things first, lets chat about why you should smoke you baked potatoes vs. baking or grilling them.

There are a few reasons why we think you should:

    • Free up space elsewhere: need space on your grill or in your oven? Start up that smoker for your baked potatoes!
    • Already using your smoker: got room on your smoker for something else? Make smoked baked potatoes.
    • Flavor- beyond all else, smoking your baked potatoes will give them that glorious smoked flavor. Try using a flavored pellet for an enhanced flavor.

Why Would You Smoke Baked Potatoes

Its actually a perfect side dish to serve with just about any meat smoked on the grill smoked prime rib, smoked whole chicken or even ribs. The reason its perfect is that it takes no further effort! You just scrub the outside of the potato and onto the smoker it goes!

I know you can slap them in the microwave and they are done in a snap, but its just not the same!

Why not use the heat of the smoker to slow cooker the potatoes? Its one less side to worry about! Just had it over to your grill master when its time for the potatoes to go on the smoker and let them do all the work!

Not that Id ever do that or anything! ?

    How To Grill Potatoes

Grilling potatoes is fun because you can truly make them your own. And there are so many different ways to grill potatoes on a Traeger. You can roast them whole, cut them in wedges and grill them over direct heat, or do twice-baked or Hasselback potatoes.

Potatoes take on a wide variety of flavors very well, so you can vary your cooking smoke and seasonings to get the exact taste you’d like.

How To Grill Potatoes In Foil

    Traeger Smoked Baked Potato

There are two ways to grill potatoes in foil, but we don’t recommend either one.

You can wrap whole potatoes in foil and place them directly on the grill grate. If you have a charcoal or gas grill and are cooking over open flame, the foil will help prevent the surface of the potato from burning before the middle is cooked. However, because the entire potato is encased in foil, it’s going to steam, rather than roast. The skin will likely be limp and the potato flesh itself will be mushy, not fluffy.

If you have a Traeger grill, you don’t need to worry about the exterior of the potato being burned by open flame, because a Traeger doesn’t have one. You can set the temperature to 450 degrees Fahrenheit, and let the potato roast out in the open. No foil needed. This way, the skin will crisp up and the flesh will get nice and fluffy.

You can also slice or chop potatoes, toss them in oil, and cook them in foil packets. We don’t recommend this either, for the same reason. The potatoes just steam in the packets, and they don’t get that nice roast from the heat of the grill or that tasty smoke flavor. A better solution is to boil the potatoes ahead of time, then cook them directly over the flame as described above.

In either case, the potatoes will not grill faster when wrapped in foil. Because the foil is a barrier between the heat and the potato itself, foil-wrapped potatoes actually take longer to cook through.

    How To Grill Baked Potatoes

I love cooking baked potatoes on the grill. Sure, the oven does the job, but by cooking on the grill over indirect heat and then finishing them hot and fast, they come out tasting better than ever. Follow these 5 steps to get perfectly grilled baked potatoes every time:

  • Prep the grill and potatoes. Preheat your grill to 350-400 degrees F for two-zone cooking . Rinse and scrub the potatoes to clean them and remove excess dirt.
  • Wrap the taters. Lay out 1 piece of 18 heavy duty aluminum foil for each potato. Drizzle each washed potato with olive oil and season well with salt and pepper. Wrap each potato tightly with foil.
  • Grill those potatoes! Place the wrapped potatoes on the indirect side of the grill, close the lid, and cook for 1 hour. Rotate the potatoes at the 30-minute mark, so that the potatoes that were close to the direct heat get rotated away .
  • Remove the foil and grill hot. After grilling for 60 minutes, remove the potatoes from the foil using heat-resistant gloves or tongs. Take care to not burn yourself these taters will be hot! Place the unwrapped potatoes on the direct side of the grill and cook them for 1-2 minutes per side .
  • Cut, fluff, and serve hot. Remove your potatoes from the grill. Split them open, fluff the insides, and serve with your choice of toppings. .
  • Traeger Baked Potatoes Smoked Bacon And Roasted Garlic

The beauty of these Traeger twice baked potatoes is that everything can go straight on the grill together. Youll need 8 russet potatoes, 12 slices of center cut bacon , and a bulb or two of garlic with a drizzle of olive oil, salt, and pepper.

If youve not roasted garlic yet, youre in for a treat. The process is simple but in case you need a more in depth walkthrough, youll like this video with Sammy Moniz from Feeding the Frasers.

If I had to choose one way to cook bacon for the rest of my life, this would be it. It gets super crispy without too much color and is evenly cooked throughout the entire strip of bacon. Not to mention, it picks up just enough smoke in the cook.

You might be tempted to cook the bacon at a higher temperature since the recipe calls for increasing the temperature after the bacon comes off. Dont do it!

Pro tip: As you pull the smoked bacon from the Traeger, use tongs to rub some of the bacon slices over the potatoes. It will pass on some flavor and help with creating crispy potato skins.

Can You Bake Bread In A Pellet Grill

If you love a good, flavorful crust then you have to try baking bread in your pellet grill. Similar to how smoke binds to the moisture of the exterior of the meat when smoking, bread will absorb the wood smoke and give off a fragrant and savoury smell and taste.

For best results use a lidded Dutch oven or enamelled pot, cooking for half the time with the lid on, and half the time without the lid to develop the nice smoked crust.

Preheat your pellet grill to 450°F, and add your proofed dough. After 30 minutes remove the lid, and leave for another 30 minutes or until the crust has developed to your liking.

  • Tips For Making Smoked Baked Potatoes:

    Simple Pellet Grill Potatoes

Ive mentioned before that my all-time favorite method of cooking baked potatoes is in the air fryer however, if Im making smoked meats, its much easier to put them on the smoker right along with the meat.

Remember that these baked potatoes will take at least 4 hours to cook on the smoker at 225*F, which means it will not be a quick-cooking method.

The first step is to cut sheets of foil to fit around russet baking potatoes, we also coat the sheets with a little bit of olive oil spray too. Then, simply wrap up the potato with foil and place them right on the smoker.

Let these slowly cook for 4 hours. I found this to be the best timing for the potatoes. They were nice and crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside.

These were made with larger-sized baking potatoes, if you are doing smaller russet potatoes then you may need to adjust your cooking time.

The potatoes can then be topped with any toppings of choice such as butter, shredded cheese, bacon, sour cream, and green onions.

Making these at the same time as the smoked meat turns out really well because you can easily serve it all together.

Why Pierce Potatoes With A Fork

Piercing or poking potatoes with a fork before smoking or baking allows steam from inside the potato to escape, giving you a light and fluffy baked potato. It also reduces the risk of the potatoes bursting on your smoker or grill. We recommend piercing each potato 8-10 times, evenly across its surface.

What Do I Serve Smoked Baked Potatoes With

This easy side dish can be served with so many things. Some of our favorites are Traeger Brisket, Pellet Grill Steak, Smoked Burgers, Air Fried Cornish Hen, or Traeger Chicken Thighs! Might as well maximize that smoky flavor while you have your pellet grill going.

    • Go vegan: One of the biggest trends in lifestyle changes is vegan eating. Good thing grilling is vegan-friendly! Just use your go-to plant-based cream, cheese and butter substitutes. Youâll have a vegan side dish anyone would love.
    • Add meats: On the other hand, if youâre a meat-eater, you can always add a few tablespoons of home-grilled bacon bits to the loaded potato mixture. Bits of ham can make super additions, too.
    • Switch up the cheese: We use cheddar cheese in our twice-baked potatoes recipe. Youâre free to try any cheese youâd like, though. For instance, consider feta for a Mediterranean boost or extra sharp cheddar and Swiss for more bite.
    • Season away: Have a home garden with some fresh herbs? Donât get married to the thought that only chives will do. Sure, chives and potatoes are a perfect combination. But fresh thyme, oregano, basil or rosemary can also do the trick.

Forget about serving plain grilled potatoes tonight. Theyâre good, but sometimes a twice-baked loaded version is just what the pitmaster ordered.
