Baker Florist of Dover will participate for the second time in the national Petal It Forward program on Wednesday, Oct. 23 at the shop on Walnut Street and in downtown Dover and New Philadelphia. The promotion is national in scope and sponsored by the Society of American Florists, of which Baker Florist is a part.

It was so much fun the last time we did this two years ago, Dalene Baker at Baker Florist said.

The shop had to skip last year due to scheduling conflicts, but this year Baker said the florists nine employees are very much looking forward to sharing smiles. We didnt have a lot of publicity about doing it last time, so people were really surprised. We went out and randomly handed people flowers, and you could see how happy they were, she said.

The national event, which sees participation in all 50 states and D.C., is designed to raise public awareness of the power of flowers, according to the Society of American Florists website. Recipients are able to give the second bouquet they receive to anyone they like: family, friend, co-worker or a complete stranger.

Why do something like this? Why not? Baker said. It puts big smiles on peoples faces and reinforces what we know so well, that the gift of flowers is a powerful thing and people definitely appreciate it.

Baker Florist Ownership Enters Fourth Generation

DOVER It is official.

On Friday, Dalene Baker became the fourth-generation owner of Baker Florist of Dover and New Philadelphia. The local floral business was owned by her parents, Rick and Karon Baker. The couple is retiring.

Rick and Karon Baker celebrated 45 years of wedded bliss June 23. They said they plan to enjoy life, travel, go boating and enjoy their grandchildren, but still help their daughter operate the shops when help is needed.

We are so proud of Dalene for her commitment to the business, Karon Baker said. Dalene has been operating the business for the past two years, so customers can expect the same service. She has worked here since 2000 and also helped as a child. Customers are the No. 1 priority.

We had some neat experiences in 45 years. We have supplied flowers for weddings in Winston Salem, N.C., and Texas. The largest wedding has a guest list of 1,200 and was held at the Canton Civic Center. It was a three-day event, Karon said.

According to the Conway Center for Family Business, an organization that helps family owned businesses stay successful in the central Ohio region, 3 percent of family owned businesses continue into fourth-generation ownership.

Dalene Baker said the primary business has stayed the same for 92 years however, the business must make changes with the times and adapt to the younger generation.

Five employees have worked for the Bakers since 2004.

Said Dalene: If we can make someone smile, we do.”

Ohio Florist Eager To Spread Smiles Next Month

The pandemic has cancelled so many events and rites of passages this year, but it wont stand in the way of one of Dalene Bakers most treasured days: Petal It Forward. The owner of Baker Florist briefly debated participating in the Society of American Florists annual goodwill project on Wed., Oct. 21, before deciding it was more important than ever.

Like many florists, our finances arent as great as they were last year, said Baker, the fourth-generation owner of the business, which has locations in Dover and New Philadelphia, Ohio. But our community needs all the smiles we can give!

A third-time participant, Baker intends to stick close to her past plan: offer in-store pickup at her two shops, as well as send a team of happiness ambassadors to downtown areas in each respective community, where theyll surprise passersby with two bouquets one to keep and one to pass on. We will be wearing masks and using hand sanitizer, she said. And this year we will be using pre-packed bouquets instead of wrapping them ourselves.

Its an absolutely great day lots of warm feelings and smiles, she said. Some people hear about what were doing and are out looking for our lime green vans, while others are completely surprised.
