BIRMINGHAM, Ala. Sometimes its a struggle to get your child excited to go to the dentist but one office is offering something that could change your mind. Medplex Pediatric Dentistry is now using Sister and Sugar, a mother-daughter pair as comfort dogs.
Medplex has been using Sister and Sugar for the past four to five years. Theyre available to provide sweet reassurance to patients. They greet patients as they walk to the operatory and are available to sit with children in the chair while undergoing dental procedures like a regular cleaning.
Dogs like Sister and Sugar are trained to provide attention, comfort, love and ease anxiety. Love and support from dogs are shown to reduce heart rates and ease anxiety. Researchers from State University of New York in Buffalo found when conducting a stressful task, people experienced less stress when their pets were with them than when a spouse, family member or close friend was nearby.
Medplex Pediatric Dentistry serves children in the Greater Birmingham area including Hoover, Pelham, Alabaster, Calera and Helena. More information about Sister and Sugar can be found here. You can also find more about Medplex services here.

How To Prepare And Repair A Chipped Or Broken Tooth
Whether its a primary or permanent tooth, chips and breaks can happen. Many tooth chips can be repaired but there are important steps you can take at home to protect the tooth before you get to see the dentist. A quick response by parents can sometimes mean the difference between preserving the tooth and losing it.
Falling down the wrong way, chewing too hard on a piece of candy, nighttime teeth grinding, and tooth decay are all be contributing factors to teeth chipping.
How to manage the chipped tooth before you get to see your PDA dentist:
- If the chip is causing pain, give your child acetaminophen according to their proper dosage or another over-the-counter pain reliever.
- Rinse with one cup of salted water several times per day. This helps remove bacteria and prevent infection.
- If the tooth has a sharp or jagged edge, you can purchase wax at your local pharmacy. This wax is the same wax your child may use for their braces and can be applied to the tooth to soften the edges and keep it from cutting the inside of the cheek or lip.
- Eat soft foods and avoid biting down on the tooth.
Treatments for broken or chipped teeth may vary depending on the severity of the damage. With small chips and baby teeth, we can usually bond or fill the tooth in one office visit. If the tooth is badly damaged it may require different types of care depending on location and depth of the break.

Ask Your Birmingham Pelham Hoover Alabaster And Helena Area Pediatric Dentist About Mouthguards For Spring Sports
Dr. Baker Chambliss wants you to remember that mouthguards shouldnt only be used during football season. In fact, mouthguards should be worn for most spring sports. You may already associate maxillofacial injuries with familiar spring sports such as basketball or volleyball, but if your child is in acrobatics, soccer, lacrosse, or even rides horses, a custom mouthguard from Medplex Pediatric Dentistry may be their best protection against orofacial injury.
All athletes are extremely susceptible to dental trauma. Dental injuries are the most common type of orofacial injury. An athlete has a 10% chance of receiving an orofacial injury every season of play. In addition, athletes have a 33-56% chance of receiving an orofacial injury during their playing career.
Mouthguards act as a barrier and stratify risk of damage to teeth, between teeth/braces and the cheeks, between the lips and tongue. With this protection, they reduce the risk of soft tissue damage.
