How Do I Make Brussels Sprouts Tasty

The short answer: roast them in a hot oven until browned and crispy! The long answer: I have a story for you about making this vegetable taste good.

My late grandma, Miep, was Dutch. Like most Dutch grandmas, her baking was amazing she baked with lots of butter. Her pannekoeken were out of this world.

However, like most Dutch grandmas, her method of cooking vegetables was to boil them, sprinkle with salt, and serve. Like other northern cuisines, traditional Dutch cuisine is very skimpy on seasonings salt and pepper is usually all you get.

Boiled or steamed vegetables can be delicious, of course, especially when not overcooked. These simple boiled green beans are a good example, as are steamed carrots.

Grandmas Brussels sprouts were wonderful! She used fresh, young sprouts, boiled them until just tender and salted liberally. I loved them as a kid. But not everyone likes them boiled, and in fact, many people find them utterly unpalatable when cooked this way.

Add Oil And Coat Brussels Sprouts

Put the trimmed Brussels sprouts in a roasting or baking pan. For easy clean-up, line the pan with parchment paper first. Drizzle the Brussels sprouts with a bit of oil and toss them to coat the sprouts evenly. Arrange them in a single layer. If you want to take the time to set them cut-side-down, you’ll end up with more evenly browned sprouts. Sprinkle with salt and any other seasonings you want to use.

You can also bake brussel sprouts at 375 degrees in the oven for 35 minutes. The final result will be richly caramelized and tender sprouts that melt in your mouth. Another possible cooking temperature is 450 degrees F. Its the perfect choice if you prefer the sprouts to be crunchy on the outside and tender on the inside. Toss the sprouts in the oven and roast them at 450 degrees for 15 minutes. At this high temperature, it is important to stir the sprouts halfway through as it helps to prevent the sprouts from getting too charred and bitter. Its not a good idea to slow cook brussels sprouts at 250 or 275 degrees because they will turn out moist and mushy. If you want to hear that pleasing crunch with every bite you have, roast them at high temperatures in the oven starting from 375 degrees F.

Air Fryer Brussels Sprouts With Bacon And Parmesan

Have you had fried Brussels sprouts at a restaurant? They are so amazing crispy outside but tender in the middle and loaded with flavor. But also, super greasy. And if you are gluten free, you have to worry about whether they fry breaded or floured dishes in that same fryer.

The secret to getting that deep fried deliciousness at home with way less oil is to make those Brussels air-fried! How To Trim Brussels Sprouts

While you can make roasted Brussels sprouts whole or halved, I recommend trimming and halving them for this recipe.

  • To trim: Using a knife, trim off the bottom of the tough stem end of each Brussels sprout. Then, remove any yellow or damaged leaves, and cut each Brussels sprout in half lengthwise, from tip to trimmed end.

Roasted Brussels Sprout Basics

A hot oven is essential for perfectly roasted Brussels sprouts, so give your oven plenty of time to preheat. While the oven gets hot, rinse the Brussels sprouts, then trim and halve them. Begin by removing the woody end and any yellow or brown leaves. Once trimmed, halve the Brussels sprouts from top to bottom, leaving the stem in place to hold the leaves together. Then toss the halved sprouts with oil and season with salt before roasting. The oil can be as simple as vegetable oil or as flavorful as avocado oil, but youll want to avoid delicate extra-virgin olive oil, nut oils, or regular butter .

Recipe For Roasting Brussel Sprouts In The Oven

Heres the recipe for roasting the brussel sprouts in the oven.

  • Remove the damaged and wilted leaves from each sprout. Then trim off the solid stem because it wont turn tender no matter how long you cook it. But avoid cutting the whole stem as it will make the leaves fall apart. Its highly recommended to cut the sprout in half vertically. The created flat surface increases the contact area of the sprout with the sheet pan. This way, it cooks faster.
  • Arrange the sprouts cut side down on the baking sheet in one layer, leaving a small space between them. The space is important because sprouts release much juice while baking. If they are crammed, the juice cant evaporate which hampers caramelization and renders the veggies moist and unappetizing in the end.
  • Sprinkle the sprouts with salt, pepper and olive oil. If you want to add a fancy touch to your sprouts, season them with your favorite aromatic herbs.
  • Bake the brussel sprouts in the oven at 400 degrees for 30 minutes. When the sprouts are cooked, they will appear lightly charred. You can also test them with a fork. Once baking is done, remove them from the oven and enjoy straight off the pan or serve with other dishes.
