Getting Crispy Skin On A Microwave Baked Potato

How to Bake a Potato in the Microwave | Allrecipes.com

If you really love a baked potato with crispy skin, you can still get that even if you do most of the cooking in the microwave.

To crisp the skin of a microwave baked potato: Preheat your oven to 425°F and cook the potato in the microwave according to the recipe instructions. Once cooked, rub your potato with olive oilit will be hot, so handle with care! Sprinkle generously with salt and place the potato on a baking sheet.

Bake until the skin is crispy, usually 10 to 15 minutes. Serve and enjoy!

Baked Potato In The Air Fryer:

This method is similar to the oven in that the skin can be crispy and the potato can be cooked perfectly. This method also takes less time, and probably less energy since you are using a small appliance rather than the oven.

Possible cons would be if you dont own an air fryer, or if you want to cook something else to go with this in the air fryer, then you may have to work in batches, which is not ideal.

Can You Microwave Raw Potatoes

‘You can definitely microwave a potato, it takes about 10 to 15 mins for a big one but keep checking,’ says Miguel Barclay , chef, and author of One Pound Meals .

‘All you need to do is stab it a few times with a fork to allow the steam to escape and prevent an explosion. Then turn it every so often to get a nice even cook. The skin wont be as dark and crispy but the inside is exactly the same, I definitely recommend this method, its cheaper and more energy efficient, plus its loads quicker.’

Cook A Jacket Potato In The Microwave And Oven

Despite their high nutritional value, potatoes are not always the healthiest choice. It all comes down to how you cook them. French fries, for example, may increase your risk of cardiovascular mortality and death from all causes when consumed in excess.

Baked potatoes are a better option as long as you don’t top them with cream cheese, sour cream and other fat-laden ingredients. The downside is that they take over one hour to cook. If you’re in a rush, you can first cook the potatoes in the microwave and finish in the oven. With this trick, you’ll cut down the cooking time and get a more intense flavor.

First, wash the potatoes thoroughly and pierce them with a fork to keep them from bursting open. Bon Appetit recommends using Russet potatoes because they’re larger and can hold plenty of toppings, from sliced tomatoes to cottage cheese and veggies.

Microwaving doesn’t yield the same results as baking, notes Bon Appetit. Potatoes baked in the oven are much creamier and have beautiful golden skin. Therefore, you should microwave them on high for no longer than six minutes, advises the Irish Food Board.

If you’re cooking several potatoes, add a few extra minutes. Cook them until they become soft in the center ââ¬â use a knife to test them. Flip the potatoes after the first two or three minutes of cooking. Once they’re ready, remove them from the microwave.

  • Wash potato skin thoroughly. Its optional but you can also coat with a little olive oil and seasoned with salt. This helps to crispy the skin.
  • Poke the potato with a fork a few times for the steam to escape.
  • Place the potatoes in the microwave. No container needed. I put them on a paper towel or a microwave safe plate, but you dont have to.
  • Cook on high for about 10 -15 minutes. It depends on how many potatoes you are cooking.
  • Flip each potato 1 times each side and continue to cook.
  • Cook for additional 10 minutes.
  • Each baked potato should feel soft to touch when they are done. We felt like 20 minutes was plenty with the 4 big ones we had. You may need to increase or decrease time a little depending on how many potatoes you are cooking.
  • Note these microwaved baked potatoes are really hot so I like to use oven mitts when handling the potatoes. You can wrap in plastic wrap if not eating right away. Just make sure to use microwave safe material if putting something in the microwave.

Figuring Out How To Bake Potatoes

Recently, I discovered that none of the kids like twice baked potatoes or potatoes with toppings. A couple of them like a plain baked potato with butter, especially Kayden. He will often request them for dinner.

Once I even ended up buying a 20 lb bag of russets at the grocery store because we were going through so many potatoes. I think he may have even packed one in his lunch once!

Youd think learning how to bake a potato wouldnt be that hard, but I cant tell you the number of times that dinner has played out like this:

Me, baking a potato, thinking that the potato is done and then finding that Ive cut into it the middle that is actually still kind of hard and not quite done yet. It can be a little annoying.

Thats too bad, because I actually really like a loaded baked potato when theyre done right. And stuffed, twice-baked potatoes are kind of favorites of mine too and you have to bake those first .

Thats what happens when I toss the potatoes into the oven and dont really pay attention to what I am doing or how long theyre cooking. Paying attention is actually kind of important considering the fact that figuring out how long to bake a potato can vary depending on how large the potato is.

If I dont bother looking at the clock, how am I ever going to know how long Ive had the baked potato in oven? No, I dont just want a baked potato. I want to bake a potato that is PERFECTLY done soft on the inside and crispy on the outside.

    Are White Potatoes Healthy

Yes! The topic has been quite controversial since many believed that it is not. A lot of people associate this vegetable with deep-fried French fries and chips that are high in fat. But that is not always the case.

Based on a USDA report, a medium spud baked with the skin on has considerable amounts of potassium, vitamin C, vitamin B6, and manganese. It also has negligible fat, 164 kcal, and 37 g of carbs.

What makes the spuds potentially unhealthy is the way they are prepared. Deep-frying and adding high-fat ingredients significantly increase the fat content.

Also, much of the nutrients are found on the skin and so, it is best to include that in your dishes. The key here is to scrub the surface clean to get rid of any dirt. In this recipe, we will do just that!

Which Potato Is Best For Baked Potatoes

How To Bake a Potato in the Microwave

There are several varieties of potatoes available in the market. These not only differ in flavor but in texture as well. When you are looking for potatoes for baking purposes, not all fit the requirement. So, you will need a potato that has more starch and less moisture. My number one choice is the russet potato! Thats because they are high in starch which makes them fluffy. Plus, being low in moisture gives them just the right texture. And above all, you can also get crispy skin!

    Microwave Baked Potato Ingredients

This 1-ingredient recipe is really more of a cooking hack than anything! This microwaved potato method is sure to make your time in the kitchen easier and more minimal. Heres what youll need:

    • Potatoes the only ingredient youll need here is russet potatoes. Easy-peasy!

Do note: you can use this method with ANY kind of potato. Sweet, Yukon gold, red, etc!

    Oven Baked Potato Ingredients:

Alright first, lets talk ingredients. To make this easy baked potato recipe, you will need:

    • Russet potatoes: Technically, you can make baked potatoes with any type of potatoes. But to make the best baked potatoes, I strongly believe that Russets are the way to go. The skins of Russet potatoes are nice and thick, which allow them to crisp up perfectly in the oven. And the insides are starchy, which make for an extra fluffy and sweet filling.
    • Butter or olive oil: I also strongly recommend using butter to crisp up your potato skins, which adds so much flavor and helps the skins get extra golden. But if you prefer not to cook with butter, you could sub in whatever type of high-heat cooking oil you prefer.
    • Kosher salt: I recommend using coarse Kosher salt, in order to add a bit of a crunch to the potato skins.
    • Freshly-ground black pepper: You can sprinkle black pepper on the potato skin before baking and/or add a few generous cracks of black pepper to the fluffy insides of the potatoes once they have fully baked.

How To Safely Clean A Microwave

    Microwave Baked Potato Recipe

Okay weve all been there, youre way past hangry and you need to get food on the table now or else you might just eat last nights potato chowder leftovers cold from the fridge. You put your bowl in the microwave, do some button mashing, and impatiently pace as the timer counts down much too slowly and it doesnt even occur to you that you forgot to put a lid on it until you hear a faint sizzling sound, open the door, and chowder everywhere.

Dont despair. Eat your chowder. Then, grab some things you probably already have around your house to easily clean up the spill. Heres what youll need:

    • Lemon, lime, or orange slices
    • A few tablespoons of white or apple cider vinegar

Combine everything in a microwave-safe container , and turn the power on high for a few minutes until the window is nice and steamy, then let it sit for five minutes to cool down. Open the door, wipe it all down with a sponge, and there you have it. No more chowder splatter paint.

It doesnt. Thats really the only downfall of microwaving a potato vs. baking it. The process is way quicker, but if crispy skin is something you really love in a potato, you may want to stick to baking your potatoes in the oven or trying an air fryer.

If you want to compromise, you could also microwave your potatoes for 3 minutes, then rub them down with olive oil and stick them in a 425°F oven for 15-20 minutes .
