How To Trim Asparagus

Lemon Garlic Roasted Asparagus (Ready in 20 Minutes!)

The ends of asparagus need to be trimmed before cooking because they are tough and woody. The ‘snapping’ method you’ve probably been taught isn’t really the best way to go about it. Instead, try lining up all of the spears on a cutting board and slicing off the ends all at once, cutting where the stalks turn from white into green. It’s not always necessary to trim asparagus, for example super fresh, pencil-thin stalks are fairly tender throughout, but generally it’s a good step to do in order to avoid chewing on inedible ends.

Tricks & Tips To Choose Fresh Asparagus

First and foremost, you have to get some asparagus from the market or grocery store. Well, you should ensure that the asparagus you get are fresh and of higher quality, or else you may have to exchange them .

Furthermore, consuming fresher asparagus reduces the chance of getting stomach pain. Plus, you also get a more flavorful experience. To ensure that you can get the best of what you are looking for, check out these signs:

How Long To Cook Asparagus

One of the most frequently asked questions is how long to cook asparagus. The answer depends on the size of your spears and your cooking method. Thin asparagus could take just a couple of minutes, especially if you’re using a high-heat method of cooking, such as grilling, roasting, or pan-frying. Thicker spears will take longer to cook. Here’s how to avoid overcooking your asparagus.

  • Allow plenty of extra spears for testing as you cook.
  • No matter which cooking method you choose, the residual heat will continue cooking the asparagus. Remove it from the stove/grill/oven when it’s almost done to your taste.
  • If you’re blanching and reheating asparagus, remove it from the boiling water when it’s still a bit more crisp than you like. The reheating will finish cooking the spears.

How Long To Cook Asparagus On Stove

Asparagus is often prepared in a stovetop cooking style. A pan or skillet is required for preparation. Bring the water to a boil. When ready, stack the asparagus on top. If the asparagus isnt submerged in water, cover the pan to keep in the heat.

Asparagus spears that arent very thick can be cooked in as little as a minute or two. It takes around 5 minutes to cook medium asparagus and about 7 minutes to cook thick asparagus. When done, spread them out on a dish and season with salt, pepper, lemon juice, oil, or butter. Enjoy! The entire method of preparing asparagus on the stove top has to be double-checked.

How Long To Cook Asparagus In The Oven At 400

On the grill, asparagus takes around 5-10 minutes to cook at 400 degrees. Once the grates are hot, thoroughly clean them. Arrange all of the asparagus stalks across the grill grates, perpendicular to the grates. Close the top and cook them, turning the spears at least once during the procedure to ensure equal grilling. Season with any toppings or salt and pepper on the platter/plate and serve with family.

Tips To Grill Asparagus:

  • Kosher salt, rather than table salt, will be ideal.
  • Always use a fork to verify the doneness of the asparagus. The asparagus should be tender rather than mushy.
  • If you just have thin asparagus, broil them in a grill basket or on grill-safe foil. This will save your thin asparagus from succumbing to a tragic, burning end.
  • Grilled asparagus may be used in sandwiches, frittatas and egg bakes, salads, and other dishes.

How To Prep Asparagus For Roasting

There are two ways to trim asparagus:

    • Bend and Break . Hold the top of the stem in one hand and grip it near the base with the other. Briskly bend and the asparagus will naturally snap in the right place. Its almost like magic and very satisfying.
    • Cut the Bunch . Hold the entire bunch of asparagus in one hand and trim off the ends about 1 1/2 inches or so from the bottom.

While cutting the entire bunch of asparagus at once is fastest, the results do not turn out as well as if you bend and break each spear individually.

Every stalk of asparagus has a slightly different breaking point where the woody end starts. If you cut the whole bunch at once, youll waste edible flesh of some spears, while missing the woody parts of others, resulting in a few stringy bites.

    How To Store Fresh Asparagus

Not unlike herbs, it’s best to store asparagus standing up in a cup of water in the fridge until ready to cook. Makes sure to trim the ends first and cover the upright spears loosely with a plastic bag.

Best practice is to use asparagus soon after buying, as the sugars naturally found in the stalk will migrate to the ends and can make the spears tough and stringy, but the water glass technique can make fresh asparagus last three to five days. Want to store it for longer? Try freezing it.

  • Toss the Asparagus in a bowl with garlic powder, salt, and pepper, and toss well to coat.
  • Its finally time to air fry them. Place the asparagus in an air fryer basket in a single layer to ensure even cooking and a crispy texture on both sides. If you have a large amount, fry them in batches. Cook for 7 minutes at 400°F.
  • How To Prepare It For Roasting

Star by cleaning it. To do so, Gently rinse under cool running water to remove any dirt or debris. Then, thoroughly dry the spears with a clean kitchen towel. The dry surface and hot oven ensure maximum crispness every time.

The best way to prepare asparagus is to snap off the ends one-by-one. This is the natural break between tender asparagus and the woody stem. The woodsy part should snap off easily.

If this is a task that seems too tedious, simply snap one spear. Then, bunch the asparagus spears together, line up the ends and cut at the point where the one asparagus spear was broken.

You can toss the ends or save them for later to use next time you make vegetable or chicken stock.

    Ingredients That Youll Need:

To create oven-roasted asparagus, youll only need five easy ingredients. The precise measurements may be found in the recipe card below. Heres a rundown of what youll need:

    • Fresh asparagus: Look for medium-thick stalks. Not the super-thin ones, nor the super-thick ones.
    • Olive oil: Extra-virgin olive oil is my favorite. If youre concerned about the low smoke point, substitute refined olive oil or avocado oil.
    • Kosher salt and black pepper: If youre using fine salt, you might want to cut back on the amount you use.
    • Garlic powder: Make certain it is fresh. In this dish, I prefer it over fresh minced garlic since it coats the spears more evenly.
    • Grated Parmesan: Finely grated is preferable to coarsely shredded.

Then fill a mason jar or small container with about 2 inches of water and set the asparagus inside. Keep it in the fridge for up to 4-5 days.

Tips For Cooking Asparagus In The Oven

Roasting Asparagus in the oven at 400°F isnt a complex process at all. Still, you can mess it up if you dont know what youre doing. Its why this recipe is included with extra hints to help make sure your roasted asparagus batches always come out tasty.

  • Use fat spears of Asparagus when roasting at 400°F. If you use the skinny ones at this heat, theyll fry out quickly in the oven and come out tough and challenging to eat.
  • Prepare the asparagus stalks by washing them thoroughly in running water. You can also break off the ends if theyre more rigid than the rest of the stalks. The outer tougher skins of the ends can also be peeled off if cutting them would make them seem shorter.
  • At 400°F, asparagus stalks are prone to drying. To make sure they roast till tender, coat the stalks with olive oil. Be careful with how much oil you use. Too much oil will make the stalks soggy, and too little will cause them to burn faster.
  • Impart an extra dose of flavor to your oven-roasted asparagus stalks with some salt and pepper. You can use any ground pepper youd prefer, but the best options are either black pepper or paprika, as these have decent high heat. Also, kosher salt is most preferred.
  • For an extra dose of flavor and aromatics, add a bit of minced garlic to the asparagus stalks. Remember that these spices and seasonings go onto the stalks before you roast, so make sure to rub them in evenly with the olive oil.
  • How To Store It

Leftover asparagus can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.

During the week, I enjoy them chilled from the fridge for lunch or slightly rewarmed when it comes dinner time.

I do not recommend freezing the roasted asparagus. Upon reheating, the spears become waterlogged and mushy.

    How To Peel Asparagus

Some people like to peel asparagus before cooking, and some don’t. Asparagus spears range in size from thicker than your thumb to thinner than a pencil if your asparagus is on the thicker side, you might want to peel the woody stalks with a vegetable peeler. Some cooks also like to trim off the tiny leaves on the stems. But unless they’re very spiky, you can leave them on.

    Achieve The Perfect Texture

Easy Roasted Asparagus. Light and Delicious!

One of the main complaints people have about asparagus is that it can be chewy and woody. This is often caused by overcooking the asparagus or not cutting it properly. When asparagus is overcooked, the cell walls break down and release their contents. This makes the asparagus slimy and mushy.

To avoid overcooking asparagus, it’s important to keep an eye on it while it’s in the oven. Set a timer for 5 minutes less than the recommended cooking time and check on the asparagus regularly. You can also insert a fork into the thickest part of the stalk. If it slides in easily, the asparagus is cooked. If it feels tough, it needs to be cooked for longer.

Not cutting the asparagus properly can also cause it to be chewy and woody. When asparagus is cut incorrectly, the tough, woody ends are left intact. These can be difficult to chew and often get discarded.

To avoid this, simply grab the asparagus by the head of the stalk and bend it until it naturally snaps in half. The asparagus will break where it’s naturally softened and you’ll get a perfect result every time.

    How To Prepare Asparagus

Rinse the stalks well in cold water. Snap off the ends as far down as they will easily break when you gently bend them, or cut off the tough white portion. If youre working with large stalks, use a vegetable peeler to gently peel the tough area of the stalk from the end to just below the tip. If the tips are large, scrape off some scales with a knife.
