Some precooked hams only need to be cooked through. However, most hams need to be cooked for a minimum of eight to 10 hours. How long the ham cooks depends on a number of factors. The first factor is the type of ham. Extra-lean hams, for example, only need to cook for an hour. Loin hams, on the other hand, need to cook much longer. When cooking a precooked ham, you should give it a few minutes of cooking time at the beginning. This allows the fat to melt and the ham to warm up, which makes it easier to carve. You can tell if the ham is cooked through when you pierce it with a fork.

How Long Does It Take To Cook A Precooked Ham

Precooked hams, such as a boneless ham, are an extremely convenient and economical way to feed a large number of people on a budget. The major problem with precooked hams, however, is that they typically take too long to cook. To ensure that a precooked ham is as tender as possible, it is important to follow the instructions on the package exactly. The main difference between cooking a precooked ham and cooking a fresh ham is that a precooked ham needs to be placed in a baking dish and then baked. A baking dish with a large opening, such as a 13×9 inch baking dish, is perfect for precooked hams because it allows for proper air flow. While the actual cooking time of precooked hams will vary depending on the type of ham and the oven used, most will take somewhere around two to three hours.

How To Bake Ham

Baking a ham is easier than you may think. I simply place the ham in a roasting pan , then pour a cup of ginger ale and a cup of orange juice overtop the ham. This not only adds to the flavor but helps keep the ham juicy while it cooks.

Cover either the ham itself or the pan with foil. Make sure it is covered well so the ham doesnt dry out.

Set the oven to 350 degrees and bake the ham, basting every 15-20 minutes. Uncover the ham when you baste it, but then cover it back up when you put it back in the oven.

    How To Make Baked Ham:

Bring to room temperature: Wait for the ham to come to room temperature, usually 1-2 hours from removing from the fridge. This will decrease the amount of time it needs to warm in the oven, which will ensure the ham doesnt dry out while warming.

Make the Glaze by combining all the ingredients in a saucepan and stir until smooth. Reduce heat to low and simmer until thickened, with a syrup consistency.

Bake: Place ham in a foil-lined roasting pan or baking dish. Brush a little glaze all over the outside of the ham. Cover it well with foil and bake at 300 degrees for 1 ½ to 2 hours.

Add more glaze: Remove ham from oven and brush rest of glaze over it. Increase oven temperature to 400 and bake for another 15 minutes. Remove from oven and tent with foil for 15 minutes before serving.

Serve with funeral potatoes or mashed potatoes and homemade rolls!

Can I Make This Ham In The Slow Cooker

Yes! You can make this ham in the slow cooker. I set the slow cooker to low, place the ham in the crockpot, and pour the ginger ale and orange juice overtop. Then I mix up the glaze and pour it over the ham. After about 4-5 hours the ham should be warmed through. If I cook this ham in the slow cooker, I try to baste it several times while it cooks so that those delicious flavors get distributed all thr0ugh the meat. The part of the ham that is soaking in the juices will have the most flavor though. You could always turn the ham over part way through cooking so the whole ham has time to simmer in the juices.

Slow cooker ham will not look as pretty as oven baked ham, but it will be tender and flavorful.

How To Choose A Holiday Ham

    Pre cooked ham heating instructions

You have a lot of different choices at the store for buying ham:

    • Whole ham vs. half ham
    • Bone-in vs. boneless
    • Fully-cooked vs. partially cooked or uncooked

For this recipe, and for most holiday occasions, we prefer an un-sliced bone-in half ham, preferably from the shank end. A half a ham will comfortably feed at least a dozen people, and cooking it un-sliced means that it’s less likely to dry out. Bone-in hams are more flavorful, and you can use the ham bone to make soup.

Half hams are also either cut from the shank end or from the butt end. The butt end may have more meat, but because of the shape of the bone at that end, is more difficult to cut. The hams pictured here are both from the shank end.

Most hams you buy at the grocery store are already fully cooked. If your ham is a partially cooked ham or an uncooked ham, it will say so on the package. Follow the cooking directions on the package to cook. The directions in this recipe are for a regular, fully-cooked ham.

Why Do You Want To Make Boneless Ham

Boneless hams tend to be much quicker to cook and theyre easier to slice because they tend to be smaller, and there isnt a bone to work around. While bone-in hams are sometimes spiral-sliced, which does make things easier, you do still have to work around that pesky ham hock.

So, if its your first time hosting a holiday meal, or you consider yourself to be more of a beginner cook, opt for a boneless ham. Its much less hassle with plenty of meat to go around.

How To Keep Ham Moist After Slicing

To keep the hams moisture after youve sliced it, it is best to place it back in the baking tray where you baked it and cover it with aluminum foil.

The juices already in the tray will penetrate the ham, making up for the moisture that has already evaporated. Also, make sure you cover the sliced part with extra aluminum foil because thats the most exposed part and thus most prone to drying up.

When your ham is ready for storage, keep it moist by covering it with plastic foil and placing it into an airtight container.

How Long Should You Put A Precooked Ham In The Fridge

When you buy a precooked ham, you may be asked by the store clerk whether you want to leave it in the refrigerator or the freezer. You should not leave it in the refrigerator for longer than a few days. This is because when a ham is stored in the refrigerator, it will begin to dry out. This may make it unappetizing. After a few days in the refrigerator, the meat will be dry and the flavors may not have time to fully develop. Additionally, it may start to form condensation on the surface of the ham. This condensation is caused by a process called bacterial growth. This may make the meat dangerous to eat. In addition, keeping the ham in the refrigerator could cause freezer burn. This is when ice crystals form in the ice pack, causing the ham to turn gray and discolored. It may also be harder to remove the meat from the ham bone.
