How To Make Oil Free Baked Sweet Potato Fries

Oven Baked Sweet Potato Fries!!

Baked fries aren’t anything new, but this method of preparing them makes them super soft on the inside, crispy on the outside and perfect for dipping in your favorite condiment.

Maybe some Homemade Ketchup?!

To make oil free fries at home, start by preheating your oven to 400F/200C.

While the oven is preheating, wash your sweet potatoes and cut them into fries

Place the cut up sweet potatoes into a large mixing bowl and sprinkle over your spices of choice as well as salt and pepper.

Toss everything well to combine.

Using a wire rack over a baking tray, lay the potato wedges out in a single layer .

Bake the sweet potatoes in the oven for about 40 minutes, or until browned and crispy on the outside.

How Do You Get The Crispy Exterior

When frying in oil, the chemical process pulls starches to the exterior of the potato and forms a crust. Since we dont get that reaction during the baking process, we have to add our own starch to the exterior of the sweet potatoes. We used a blend of corn starch and tapioca starch .

Bonus: using this blends of starches means your fries are still gluten-free. Just be sure to use gluten-free spices.

What You Will Need

  • Sweet potatoes – Make sure to follow the tips below for soaking and drying the potatoes
  • Oil – We used a good quality olive oil, but vegetable oil or sunflower oil will work too.
  • Cornstarch – Also known as corn flour. This is the secret ingredient to getting crispy fries.
  • Seasoning – We went with garlic, parsley, sea salt and black pepper

Sweet Potatoes Are Famous Around The World For Obvious Reasons: They’re Delicious And Versatile Bake Steam Roast Or Puree Them

Sweet potatoes belong to the morning glory family . Native to Central and South America, they were cultivated five thousand years ago and spread around the world like wildfire. Their worldwide expansion is due, in part, to the fact that sweet potato plants grow really well in a lot of places they do all right basically anywhere that doesnt get very cold, and they thrive in a tropical or subtropical climate.

Sweet potato plants give a lot and require very little. They actually improve the soil, and their lush vines shade out noxious weeds. Theyre reliable and produce generous crops, even in poor soil with little rain and high heat. No wonder they became popular everywhere they could grow.

The other, and most obvious, reason for the sweet potatos worldwide fame is that theyre delicious, and versatile. Sure, theyre purportedly full of nutrients and are super good for us, but if none of that were true, theyd still be a favorite.

For those of you who prefer using an air fryer, coat the sweet potato fries with the olive oil and spices as per the recipe directions. Air-fry the sweet potato fries in batches by cooking them one layer at a time.

Fry potatoes at 400 degrees for about 18-20 minutes. About halfway through, shake the basket to flip the fries. When done, dust with more spice to taste and air fry for an additional 3 minutes.

Season with salt and more of the spices to your liking.

The Baking Method Broken Down

First things first, you want to either spray the tray with a light coating of oil, or use heavy duty foil so the fries dont stick.

Secondly you want to make sure you dont overcrowd the fries. As the fries cook they will release steam, if they are crowded together they are going to consequently steam instead of roast. These sweet potato fries are divas, give them space. Use two trays if you need to.

You want to cook them on a high heat, so as I mentioned earlier youre looking at 430f/220c. Ironically you dont want to bake these fries, you want to roast the heck out of them. Cooking on a low heat will bake them, leaving them soft and soggy. Because the fries are quite thin its not going to take long at all for the inside to cook, so a short sharp stint of high heat will focus on getting the outside crispy.

After around 15mins you want to take them out, flip them over and put the trays back in the opposite way. This will ensure an even roast across the board.

From there on out it usually takes around another 10-15mins until they risk burning. You will find they go slightly black but wilth baked sweet potato fries unfortunately thats inevitable.

How To Bake Sweet Potato Fries

These homemade sweet potato fries are so easy to make because the oven does most of the work. Just cut them up into evenly sized pieces, this will help make sure they bake evenly. Toss with a little cornstarch, oil, and whatever spices you prefer. The exact sweet potato fries seasoning is up to you!

Next, line them up on a baking sheet, leaving a little room between each one. Then, bake for about 30 minutes, flipping halfway through! The picture below is the sweet potato fries right before popping them into the oven.

Cut All Fries The Same Size

Featured Recipe:Oven Sweet Potato Fries

Whether you cut your fries into sticks or wedges, the pieces need to be the same size. This ensures that the fries cook at the same rate. Remember: you’re cooking at 450°F-that’s high heat. If you cut the pieces too big, they’ll be overdone on the outside and underdone on the inside. If you’re going for the classic “fry” shape, 1/4-inch-thick matchstick slices work. A medium sweet potato cut lengthwise into eight wedges works well too.

The secret to crispy sweet potato fries is to spread them out in an even layer with enough room so that they don’t touch. This is especially important if you’re making a big batch of fries. Instead of just piling more onto one baking pan, spread them out over two baking pans or cook them in batches. Baked Sweet Potato Fries Ingredients

Crispy baked sweet potato fries require surprisingly few ingredients. In fact, the sweet potato fries seasoning used in this recipe is made up of just four simple spices!

Heres what youll need to make homemade sweet potato fries:

    • 2 lbs sweet potatoes peeled and sliced into 1/2-inch thick sticks
    • 1 Tbsp cornstarch
    • 2 1/2 Tbsp olive oil

    Seasoning For Sweet Potato Fries

I dont think you can go wrong whatever flavor combination you choose to jazz up your baked sweet potato fries! Totally have fun and make this recipe your own. Looking for something spicy and smoky, use a combination of cayenne and smoked paprika. Want a bit of an Italian twist, try something like oregano and thyme flakes.

But this time, I used Za’atar spice, which is a Middle Eastern spice blend made of roasted sesame seeds and wild thyme. If you haven’t tried our all-natural za’atar spice, find it here.

Here, zaatars earthy and slightly tangy flavor is a great contrast to the soft and mellowed sweetness from the sweet potatoes. I make sure to sprinkle some more za’atar on the sweet potato fries as they come out of the oven to give them even more of a flavor blast. Comfort at its best!

    I have a confession.

I am not only addicted to desserts I have a serious obsession with sweet potato fries. Well, if were being honest I have an obsession with ALL things sweet potato. Baked sweet potato wedges, sweet potato casserole, sweet potato chips, sweet potato chili, and my moms brown sugar glazed sweet potatoes.

I make baked sweet potato fries at home all the time. Since theyre baked and not fried, I feel good about snacking on them or serving them up with dinner. The recipe is so simple, I never thought to share it on my blog. But the time has come I can no longer keep my love for these cinnamon-spiced fries a secret.

The first step is to start with some sweet potatoes. The amount of potatoes depends on how many fries you want to make. For the two of us, I always use 2 very large sweet potatoes. Sometimes three, which makes a ton of fries. Ive never complained about snacking on the extra sweet potato fries, thats for sure.

If youre baking for just yourself, Id use 1 large sweet potato. If youre making the fries as a side dish for a family of 4+, Id use 1 small size sweet potato per person depending how hungry you are.

I like to cut the fries to be a little thin. Not shoestring-style and not too thick. About 1/4 inch wide. Like so:

Now its time to gobble them up.

    • Total Time:1 hour, 15 minutes
    • Yield:serves 2-41x

Oh How It Wishes It Were A French Fry

One of my favorite dinnertime memories involves sweet potato fries and my daughter when she was just 2 years old. I had attempted oven-baked sweet potatoes fries as a side for dinner. After my daughter sat down to eat, she picked a limp sweet potato fry from her plate and sighed, Oh how this wishes it were a french fry. Since that night, Ive tried and tested at least a dozen different methods for baking sweet potato fries that are actually crispy. Nothing like a wistful 2-year-old to kickstart a culinary journey.

Fast forward a bit and that journey has brought me here. Today I can confidently say that the secret to crispy, oven-baked sweet potato fries is a combination of extra starch and oil. They work together to create a thin coating on the fries which, when baked, becomes delightfully crispy while the sweet potatoes soften. With the simplest of changes we end up with a crispy sweet potato fry with a soft interior that is still sturdy enough for dipping.
