It’s safe to day at Nadiya is pretty experimental, and never short of ideas for new and imaginative creations. When we caught up with her after filming, it became clear she’s not just great at thinking outside the box for fresh flavour combinations. Nadiya also loves to experiment with different cooking techniques.

I have baked my puff pastry in an air-fryer before and it works really well you get a lovely crisp pastry, she tells us, while she also uses the hob to make oven-free giant cookies.

Nadiya loves a no-cook dessert, too. “l make possets, mousses, tiffins and fridge cakes none of which require actual baking.

If you’re using the oven more sparingly these days, it doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a comforting pudding. Justine Pattison and Sarah Cook know how gadgets like slow cookers, air fryers and microwaves can be used to create delicious cakes, pastries and desserts. So, we asked them for their alternative baking tips.

The most surprising loaf came from the microwave. Although it had no crust or color, it was light and airy with impressive texture, reminiscent of Chinese-style steamed buns, all in only 4 minutes.

The only method that ultimately failed was the Instant Pot. When we tried pressure-cooking the bread, it emerged dense and wet, then collapsed on itself. Oh well, that simply means you can save the pressure cooker to make the stew you’ll dip your bread into.

But as long as you have another of these methods, youve got a path to homemade upper-crust bread.

Baking Using Clay Oven:

Baking using a clay oven has a long history. Those days have a large chimney made using clay. Clay was used because it can retain heat for a very long time and also keep the insides very warm. When people were living in small communities, they had a large clay oven that can cater the items to the entire community.

I will share with you the exact steps to build a small clay oven in your backyard which will assist you in preparing bread or pizza during family gatherings. Also, the bread made from this clay oven would be very soft and tasty as well. This is a clay oven and this is our first method on how to bake without oven.

Start with the following items I am going to list below:

  • Dig some mud or fresh clay from your nearby pond.
  • Take some dried grass or buy some hay from your nearby farm, since when its mixed with clay becomes strong when dried.
  • Now take some bricks and line them evenly on the interior of your clay oven.
  • Now place some bricks or slabs depending on your liking for the base of the clay oven.

Now that the clay oven is ready, we can bake some delicious bread!!

Why Not Just Use The Oven

Many Aussie kitchens include an oven or stove, even if its just a rusty old hotbox wedged into the corner. So why wouldnt you just bake with that?

Well, not every home has that option:

  • Some kitchens, such as those in granny flats, are REALLY small, and can only accommodate a hotplate for cooking.
  • Sometimes, the homes oven may be old and broken, or cant provide an even heat for reliable baking.
  • Some ovens are too small to fit a decent-sized biscuit tray or a respectable cake tin inside.

Are There Other Oven

No

With a bit of imagination, there are many ways to bake without an oven! For example, the stovetop methods weve outlined can be adapted to use on an outdoor grill or campfire. So if youre camping, there is no excuse for surviving solely on bacon sandwiches and other fried foods anymore!

Last, but not least, lets look at how to bake bread without using an oven!

Now, some bread can use different methods. But others cannot.

For example, a baguette wont fit into any other appliance you use, while a sourdough needs to be baked with a ton of steam and at very high temperatures.

So, just like cookies, some of the below-mentioned options wont work for all types of bread!

    1. Bread Maker

If you know what a bread-maker looks like or own one yourself, you can immediately tell what it will be capable of baking .

Bread makers are special appliances designed to bake loaves of bread. Naturally, they work at the correct baking temperatures and have built-in timer functions. Many can also inject a certain amount of steam to help the loaves rise more.

While they are incredibly effective, they still wont give you crusty bread as an oven does. And, they also work best for denser types of bread, like a farmers loaf or rye loaf.

So, you may be pretty 50/50 on this option. But, for making bread without an oven, its hands-down your best alternative.

    2. Air Fryer

Here we are again with the good old air fryer. It is a very versatile appliance to have around the house and it is energy efficient.

While we have already listed the benefits and downsides of using air fryers for baking, how do they apply to loaves of bread?

But, the downside is that they cannot bake big bread and they cannot bake long loaves of bread.

    3. Stove-Top

    Using A Cast Iron Skillet

Cast iron skillets are a great baking tool!

The flavors get embedded into the pan and infuse everything you cook, giving you a delicious flavor and taste. Due to their thick bottom, they dont burn easily.

Here is a quick recipe on how to bake bread on the iron skillet using a stovetop.

Take a large bowl. Add in one and a half cups of flour, and half a teaspoon of salt.

Make a big hole in the center and add warm water. Add ½ teaspoon of instant yeast, 1 spoon of sugar, and 1 teaspoon of oil. Add one spoon of water and make it into a soft dough.

Make the dough into a smooth ball shape and transfer the dough into another bowl. Cover it with an airtight lid or cloth for two hours.

The dough would have doubled up in size. Knead the dough with your hands into the shape of your choice. I usually make it round.

Next, grease the cast iron skillet with oil and place the dough on it. Cover it up with a cotton cloth for 15-20 mins. The dough would have risen again.

Tie a kitchen napkin to the lid of the skillet. It will absorb the moisture released as steam and prevent the water droplets from falling back into the dough.

Place the skillet on the stovetop and bake on sim for 10 mins. Turn the bread and cover the lid again for five minutes.

Transfer to a wire rack and allow it to cool down. Enjoy. Watch here for visual clarity.

Quick tip- Always grease up the skillet. This way the batter wont stick and you will be able to remove the cake in one go.

How To Bake Moist Chocolate Cake Without an Oven, Kenyan Recipes ...

As we all know, cooktops and stoves provide simple heat to a flat surface, making them ideal for boiling a pot of water for pasta, frying up some eggs and bacon, or blasting a wok for a traditional stir-fry. Theyre not intended for baking.

But that doesnt mean they cant do it!

    source: Fauzias Kitchen Fun

What youll need is a BIG piece of cookware. A super-sized pot, with a tight-fitting lid, large enough to fit smaller pieces of cookware inside.

Stick one of these on the cooktop and place your baking tin inside. The heat from your cooktop will warm up the air inside the pot, baking the contents.

Of course, if too much heat gets delivered to the base of your pot, this elaborate setup will basically provide the same kind of results as just using a frying pan, with a crispy or burned base and an uncooked top. For more even heating, youll want to add some kind of spacer in between the base of the pot and your baking tin or tray, so the hot air can circulate all around your baking tin.

A wire rack should work well, but weve also found online examples of people using stones, pieces of ceramic tile, or even sand to keep the baking tin away from the hot base. Just make sure that whatever you use is heatproof, and wont crack or break!

How To Bake Cookies Without An Oven

Baking a cake without an Oven!!! (Using a Jiko or gas cooker)

Cookies are arguably one of the hardest basic baked goods to make without an oven. Thats because there are many, MANY, different kinds of cookies!

Some common examples are chewy chocolate chip cookies, hard shortbread biscuits, and crunchy caramel wafers.

See where we are going with this? Cookies are the most likely baked good to fail on the first oven-less baking attempt.

So, does that mean its an uphill battle? Yes, and no. For generic cookies , you can relatively effectively use the methods we discuss below.

However, some types of cookies just wont work as easily with some, if not all, of these methods. Nevertheless, give these techniques below a try before giving up!

    1. Air Fryer

For cookies, an air fryer is your best bet. Yes, not everybody has one, but thats about the only downside to this option.

Air fryers are big enough to at least make almost a dozen regular-sized cookies at a time. So, youll need to work in small batches. But cookies also dont take very long to bake. So, its a longer process, but not the end of the world!

Again, an air fryer will provide instant heat to the unbaked cookies, which will instantly activate the leavening agent. The cookies can start rising immediately and set in place after a couple of minutes.

An air fryer will also bake at very specific temperatures and can set a timer for cookies as well. Some fancy air fryers even have built-in cookie baking settings for your convenience!
