How To Make A Baked Potato On A Grill

The base of this recipe is obviously a baked potato, so lets start with that.

  • STEP ONE: Wash your russet potatoes and pierce the potato skin a few times with a fork.
  • STEP TWO: Brush the potato all over with vegetable oil.
  • STEP THREE: Sprinkle kosher salt all over the potato.
  • STEP FOUR: Heat your grill to medium-high heat with an indirect heat zone. If you have a charcoal grill, push the coals to one side. If you have a gas grill, only turn on one burner. If you have a pellet grill, set it to 375F.
  • STEP FIVE: Place potatoes on the grill grates over the indirect heat, leaving some space in between them. There is no need to wrap the potatoes in aluminum foil. Keeping them exposed will help create crispy skin.
  • STEP SIX: Cook the potatoes for about one hour. The time will vary, depending on the size of the potatoes. The best way to know theyre done is when the internal temperature measures between 205-210F degrees. I use my Thermapen One to check the temp.

Grilling is a fun and easy way to cook food, but it can also be dangerous if done incorrectly. One of the most common mistakes people make while grilling is rubbing a potato on the grill. This causes intense heat and can result in fire. To prevent this from happening, be sure to use a non-stick grill and rub the potato properly before cooking.

How To Store Ninja Grilled Baked Potatoes

Baked potatoes are great for meal planning because they actually store really well. You may want to make a few extra for lunches and future meals.

When you plan to store them, dont load them up. Leave them whole. Allow them to cool for 20-30 minutes. Then, place them in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

    Theyll last for 5-7 days.

If you dont want to eat loaded baked potatoes all week, you can slice them, top them with cheese and add them to the Ninja Grill, until they are heated through and the cheese melts.

You can also scoop out the insides, combine them with butter and milk and make mashed potatoes.

Or make twice-baked potato skins by cutting them in half, scooping out the inside, mixing it with butter and milk and returning it to the skins. Top with cheese and bake in the Ninja Grill, until warmed through.

Start by scrubbing the potatoes and piercing them with a forkthis allows the steam to escape while they cook. The next step is to rub them in olive oil, sprinkle with salt and then wrap in foil and then all you have to do is place them on the grill.

Piercing them with a fork helps to avoid them from exploding on the grillits never happened to me, but I did some research and apparently thats the reason we pierce potatoes before baking them.

Once they are on the grill, they cook for about 45 minutes, give them a flip and turn every so often to ensure even cooking. I find using smaller potatoes is a good option here as larger ones will take longer to cook.

How To Make a Baked Potato on a Grill

I may be treading on thin ice here: I grill my potatoes wrapped in aluminum foil. Now before you slam your laptop and shake your fist at me, I shall explain. The potatoes are first grilled, wrapped in foil, and then theyre unwrapped and cooked for a little longer.

I dont wrap them to decrease the cook time, which is negligible, but to help the seasonings adhere to the skin. They wont stay on if you grill the potatoes unwrapped from the get-go.

When the potatoes go back onto the grill for a second time, unwrapped, I add a few chunks of hickory wood to the fire. The potatoes crisp up just a bit more while taking on the sweet, smokey aroma of wood. When done, the inside of the potato is fork-tender and ready for butter, and as you will discover, the salty crisp skin is downright addictive.

How Long To Grill Baked Potatoes

It takes approximately 1 hour to fully grill baked potatoes with your grill temperature set at 450-500 degrees F. I recommend cooking the potatoes wrapped in heavy duty foil for the first 60 minutes, then unwrapping them and placing them on direct heat for 4-5 minutes to crisp the skin. Make sure to keep track of the internal temperature of your potatoes while they are cooking. Grill temperatures can vary, and your potatoes might need a little less or more time to get to that perfectly soft texture.

Grilling Whole Potatoes Wrapped In Foil

  • 1Wash the potatoes. Run each potato under cool water and use your hands or a soft sponge to scrub it clean of dirt.
  • 2Prepare each potato. Using a sharp knife or vegetable peeler, remove any blemishes or green spots.Advertisement
  • 3Pat the potatoes dry. Dry potato skins absorb oil, butter and seasonings better, making the potatoes more flavorful.
  • 4Poke holes in the potatoes. Before wrapping your potatoes in foil, use a fork to poke a few holes across the skin. This allows the heat to vent from the potatoes for even cooking.
  • 5Wrap your potato in aluminum foil. Tear off sheets of foil for all the potatoes you plan to cook and wrap them tightly in the foil. Be sure the potatoes are covered completely.
  • You can roll them in the foil and pinch the sides closed or fold the foil over them and fold the sides.
  • 6Place your potatoes on the grill. Turn on your grill and adjust the heat to high. Spread your foil wrapped potatoes out over the grill. Place them close together and on the hottest part of the grill.
  • If you are cooking many potatoes, you can pile them in even thickness over the hottest part of the grill. This way, once the bottom row begins to char, it will be time to flip them.
  • If they’re too charred but not done in the middle, put them back on, away from the hottest part of the grill, and cover the grill.
  • In the last 5 to 10 minutes of cooking, you can remove the potatoes from the foil and return them to the grill, unwrapped. This will brown the skins.

I wouldnt try cooking these potatoes on the grill without the foil, the skin of the potatoes will end up burning before the inside is done. Keep in mind that the potatoes will be on the grill for 45 minutes to one hour, pretty much anything would burn in that amount of time!

Im always extra careful when removing them from the grill because they will be insanely hot, so be sure to allow them time to cool before unwrapping the foil and slicing into the tender and pillowy potatotrust me, its worth the wait.

Should You Put Salt In Water When Soaking Potatoes

How to Make a Baked Potato on the Grill

Yes, you should put salt in water when soaking potatoes. Here are a few reasons:

  • Potatoes are high in sugar and can become acidic if not treated. This can make them difficult to clean and make them prone to getting sick.
  • Potatoes also love water, which means they will grow even faster in a pot with salt than without it. This is especially helpful if you want to try to get them into shape before the next cold season arrives.

    The Best Potatoes For Grilling

In our opinion, the only potato perfect for grilling is a medium-sized Russet potato. These are starchy potatoes with a thick skin that crisps nicely on the grill. The most common is the Russet Burbank, a dark-skinned variety with few eyes and an oblong shape. This is the potato variety most popular for making french fries and accounts for the majority of potatoes used in the U.S.

If you are looking to try something a little different than the same old Russet potato, try Yukon gold potatoes. These are also a starchy potato, but have thinner skin and a lighter color.

The average 10 to 12-ounce russet should take one hour, however cook the potato to the proper internal temperature. It may seem odd to take the internal temperature of a potato. Its not because of food safety issues , its because you are waiting for the inside of the potato to reach a thermal point where it is soft. And 205 is the magic number. If you pull it too soon, then the texture inside the potato will be hard in some places and soft in others. Americas Test Kitchen also agrees that 205 is way to go.
