Cameron Boland, a junior at Fort Myers High School in Fort Myers, Florida, visited nearby Ida S. Baker High School to run for her county’s National Honor Society historian. She wore a super cute sun dress to give her speech. After a vote, Cameron won! But before long, officials stripped Cameron of her title since Baker High’s dress code forbids spaghetti straps. A Girl Was Humiliated And Sent To The Principal For Her Natural Hair

When it comes to restricted hair styles, some schools enact policies that seem racist. An eighth-grader in Toronto was sent to the principal after a teacher called her natural hair “too poofy” and “unprofessional,” and said that “no one would hire her with hair like that” and if “she were working in a store, no one would buy anything from her.” The student was given the option of pulling back her hair, but shouldn’t have been forced to make that decision in the first place.

    Dressing Down Discriminatory Dress Codes

Sexualized and gender-based dress codes are off the menu in Ontario restaurants following Human Rights Commission’s report

Reprint was created with permission on May 16, 2017 from the May 10, 2017 issue

THIS YEAR, on International Womens Day, theOntario Human Rights Commission released a new report, Not on the Menu: Inquiry report on sexual and gender-based dress codes in Ontarios restaurants. This report outlines findings from an inquiry into dress codes at various Ontario restaurants and commitments made by a number of Ontario restaurant chains to put an end to discriminatory dress codes for restaurant staff particularly female and transgender workers and create more inclusive workplaces. The OHRC also released its Policy position on sexualized and gender-specific dress codes.

The result: sexual harassment and gender-based dress codes are off the menu, and will no longer be tolerated. Thus, employers with discriminatory dress codes expose themselves to liability.

Hopefully, this report will bring about change which is long overdue.

Impact of discriminatory dress codes on employees

Most workers in restaurants and bars across Ontario are women, many of whom are young and precariously employed. As a result, they are prone to being more vulnerable and are less likely to be aware of or be able to assert their rights.

Dozens Of Girls Were Sent Home For Dress Code Violations On A 90

    Age restriction guidelines

Vista Murrieta High School in Murrieta, California sent dozens of students home during the final week of school for dress code violations. The school’s dress code prohibits girls from wearing tube tops, low cut tops that expose cleavage, tops that expose most to all of their backs , and skirts/shorts/skorts that are shorter than 4″ from the top of knee . Boys, on the other hand, have just three rules to watch out for: no bandanas, sagging pants, or tank tops. Considering the 90-degree heat, it seems unfair to limit what girls can wear to school. What else are girls supposed to wear in that weather?

This Girl Was Stripped Of Her Honor Society Title Because Of This Dress

    Seriously?

Cameron Boland is a junior at Fort Myers High School in Fort Myers, Florida and a member of the National Honor Society. She usually wears a t-shirt and jeans to school but decided to wear a dress on the day she gave a speech to run for the position of Lee County’s National Honor Society historian. Cameron wanted to look nice for the ceremony.

Cameron ended up wearing a super cute white and blue ombre sun dress to the election ceremony at Ida S. Baker High School in Cape Coral, Florida and gave her speech like a pro. Soon after, voting took place and it was announced Cameron had won the election! Awesome, right?!

Well, her victory was short-lived, because soon after Cameron won, she was told that her title would be taken away because the dress she wore to give her speech was inappropriate since it had spaghetti straps and bared her shoulders. The district claims that other students were complaining about it to the Honors Society advisors, which led to her title being stripped.

    More From Seventeen

Cameron told Wink News that while she was aware that there was a dress code at Ida S. Baker High, she didn’t think it applied at the ceremony since it was an extra curricular activity and she didn’t attend that school. Cameron tried to work with the school to fix the situation: She asked if she could put on a jacket she had brought with her, apologize, and redeliver her speech, but the advisors at the event said no.
