Students Lost In The Shuffle

Bakers dismal graduation rate almost certainly has something to do with the at-risk students Spicer mentioned people who may come from low-income backgrounds, who didnt excel in high school or who are balancing school, parenting and a full-time job.

Open enrollment institutions generally do not have high graduation rates, Baker officials noted to reporters in a written statement.

But for many students, the biggest hurdles placed in their way came from Baker itself.

Baker often starts programs, then changes them, moves them or shuts them down before students finish. It opened a campus in Reading, Pennsylvania, in 2016 that closed nine months later.

A common criticism among students is the lack of guidance once they begin school about everything from internships to graduation requirements. Students said they were on their own to find required internships. Baker once promoted free lifetime placement service, but recent graduates said they were simply referred to Handshake, an online platform.

Baker College does have a Career Services department that continues to offer both current students and alumni assistance with social media profiles, resume writing, and career search and placement services, Baker said in its response.

The department has four full-time and two part-time staffers. Davenport, which has roughly the same student population as Baker, employs 12 people full-time. It also makes use of Handshake and offers lifetime services.

REQUIREMENTS AND SUGGESTIONS FOR NEW STUDENTS

Our requirements are pretty simple. You must be an Oregon resident and you must be high school age. It’s okay if you’ve never been in a public school before! If you have been in an accredited high school, the credits you’ve earned will transfer in with you.

College work requires a new level of independence and responsibility. Successful students are able to communicate independently, advocate for their needs, and manage time well. It’s okay if you have no prior experience with college-level work. We’ll help place you into the correct level of classes to meet you where you are. That said, college courses are still college courses and are not simplified for high school students. Our goal is to help students find the right classes to challenge them, but not overwhelm them. If you aren’t quite ready for the challenge of college classes, that’s okay. We’ve got classes for you too! For students under 15, only high school options classes are available. Students who are under 16 may not take classes at PCC, LBCC, RCC, or UCC, but may take classes from another one of our college partners.

We accept students on a rolling admissions basis, all year long. If you would like to enroll in Baker Early College between college terms, we do have some alternative options while you wait for college classes to begin. Please reach out to Kimberly Linn, for more details:

Tuesday May 17 20: 00 Pmupdate: Vaccine Mandate For Baker College Employees

BakerProud,

As the world continues to evolve through the COVID-19 pandemic, it is evident that we will need to remain knowledgeable and flexible in our approaches to addressing the pandemic. We will need to address peaks and valleys for the foreseeable future by using a multitude of mitigation strategies. These include vaccinations, boosters, masking, handwashing, social distancing, and staying home when you do not feel well.

Based on the progress made in managing the COVID-19 pandemic, BC is suspending the COVID-19 vaccine mandate for employees and students. This decision does not change BCs commitment to the protection that vaccinations bring in contracting COVID-19 and reducing the severity of infections, and we strongly encourage everyone who is able to receive the COVID-19 vaccination.

Effective , vaccinations or approved exemptions are not required to attend BC classes on campus or live in the residence halls. College of Health Science, School of Nursing, and School of Occupational Therapy colleagues are encouraged to consult with their Program Directors to determine vaccination requirements for their position.

The BC Pandemic Response Team continues to evaluate infection, hospitalization, and mortality rates to ensure decisions are grounded in available data. In addition, BC supports CDC and local health department recommendations. Baker College will adjust pandemic policies to prioritize student and staff safety.

Sincerely,

Baker College Pandemic Response Team

S: The Great Recession And Austerity

In the 2010s, funding for community colleges faced scrutiny as state budgets were tightened. Because higher education budgets are considered discretionary expenses, they have been more likely targets for cuts than Kâ12 education or Medicaid. In 2014, however, the state of Tennessee and the city of Chicago, Illinois began programs for free community college.

In 2015, President Barack Obama proposed making community college tuition free to many residents of the United States. The plan, called “Americaâs College Promise“, rekindled a nationwide conversation on community colleges and the funding of higher education in general. The proposed program would have had state contribute a portion of the funding and would have covered tuition only non-tuition items would not have been covered. However, key Republican lawmakers, including John Boehner and Mitch McConnell publicly opposed the legislation.

Tennessee currently has the Tennessee Promise, but this initiative does not receive its funding in the same way in which President Obama wanted to fund U.S. College Promise . Following in the footsteps of Tennessee and Oregon was Illinois. The Community College of Philadelphia and Harper College in Illinois announced plans to provide free two-year community college experiences to students .

I started this school a month ago because it was close to home. I had planned on going for a few semesters and then transferring to an accredited university. Guess what they don’t tell you? You credits mean nothing! You cannot transfer without wasting all that time and money for no reason. I have 2 racist instructors who are not professors, nor even seem intelligent enough to teach! They spend the time talking about themselves or yelling at students. I am middle aged and have been ridiculed and harassed for weeks! No one will help me. The Dean is a joke. I pay almost $100 each class to be subjected to a nightmare. Do not send your kids or go to this joke. And the 97% employed? Prove it! Their job fair consisted of only Lowes, Where you can make minimum wage. Really?

Low Earnings For Baker College Students

Baker College Student Housing – Make Yourself at Home

A decade after enrolling, fewer than half of Baker College students make more than $28,000 a year.

In its response to questions from the Free Press/ProPublica, Baker said financial aid award letters and loan request forms list each students maximum eligibility for federal loans, as regulations require, as well as the reduced amount recommended to cover their institutional charges. This was done to reduce over-borrowing. The college also provides students with aggregate loan totals and estimated monthly payments.

Baker also noted that if students took out private loans, these were disbursed without the colleges awareness or involvement.

If students dont repay federal loans after leaving Baker, the government can garnish their wages, tax refunds and Social Security benefits. It can also hire collection agencies and file lawsuits to pursue payment. Unlike other forms of debt, federal student loans are extremely difficult to discharge in bankruptcy.

For Baker, the loans pose no risk or obligation. In fact, they provide a steady source of government-guaranteed revenue.

About 51% of Bakers tuition revenue comes from federal student loans. Add in Pell Grants given to low-income students, which dont have to be paid back, and about 72% of Bakers tuition is backed by taxpayers.

Student reliance on loans can also be reduced through generous financial aid, often supported by college endowments. And Baker, in fact, has a sizable one.

Advantages Of Community Colleges

Effective and passionate instructors can provide remedial students with social capital, leading them to services ranging from tutoring and counseling. Students in remedial courses can often end up performing âbetter than college-prepared students in terms of their grade point average, retention, and program completionâ. Remedial students who attend community college orientations and receive more contact with tutoring, advising and mentoring services find these options to be rewarding. Those who complete remedial courses before college level courses often experience more benefits, including higher grade point averages, compared to their counterparts who do not take these remedial courses early in their college careers.

If you take the time to read the poor reviews you’ll find people saying they had to do work and they didn’t like it, or maybe you’ll even see the guy who left a bad review because he got a bad grade because he liked to turn his assignments in late. It’s sad people who want to degrade the school because they didn’t want to do the work. College isn’t easy. I’m sorry for those that think no child left behind should apply to college. In the military I’ve attended several colleges and combined them together with Embry-Riddle for my B.S. I did like Embry-Riddle. However, not one of the colleges/universities I attended held a candle to my experience at Baker College Center for Graduate Studies. Every dollar I spent I got two dollars back in education. The work was challenging, but great! My MBA has helped me with every facet of my life. When I took my B.S. I felt like I was getting maybe 40% value for my money. With Baker I felt like I was getting closer to 95%. Yes they are accredited. Embry-Riddle holds its own prestige in its own right, and my ERAU counselor even pushed me to Baker for my MBA for more breadth. People can say what they want, but I definitely graduated feeling like I left with a true graduate education. All I can say is thank you to my great professors, and I’m sorry for the “children left behind.”
