Bake for Good

As far as I can tell, the recipes in the book are all also online. So why would you buy the book?

I recommend it because it teaches you about baking. The book does this better because it presents information in an organized fashion, when and where you need it. I personally also prefer books to reading recipes on my phone when I know I will have flour-covered hands.

The online recipes dont always come with the extra knowledge about ingredients or little baking tips that are scattered throughout the book. But the online recipes have some advantages: photos, reviews, and comments.

King Arthur also has free bake-along challenges where they post in-depth articles and videos to help us all get better at baking. For an example, check out the baguette recipe, bakealong post, and their .

You can preview about 100 pages of the book on service.

So the choice is yours! I enjoy this cookbook and use the online recipes if I want to see a picture or read reviews. If you happen to be interested in buying this book, heres the along with the most helpful review.

You can also get it directly from King Arthurs website, although it tends to be more expensive since Amazon often has a sale price for $5-$10 less than list. Shipping from King Arthur is $10.95 .

Bake For Good Fall 2021

As schools begin to return to entirely in-person learning, we continue to adjust our program to best meet the needs of schools. Our Live Remote Demonstration was so successful this past year that were adding it as a regular program option. We will not be traveling to visit schools in person this fall but hope to return to travel in the spring. All programs continue to require a level of video technology watching the instructional video online and/or using a remote video platform to learn with the teacher, class, or BFG Instructor.

How To Bake Successfully Even When Youre Feeling Foggy

After working in kitchens and navigating such a physically demanding industry as a disabled person, Emma Hayes started the online group Crip Cooks Club, a supportive community to discuss the magic, creativity, and angst that comes with being a disabled/chronically ill person in the kitchen or at the bar. Below, shes sharing advice for baking with one particularly common symptom: brain fog.

    * * *

Baking when my brain fog is bad can be infuriating and demoralizing. Not to be too on the nose, but it makes it feel like the synapses in my brain are trying to fire through Marshmallow Fluff. My multiple disabilities often find their way into the kitchen, but out of all my symptoms, its the brain fog that most consistently messes with me when I bake.

As Emily Rich, an occupational therapist and someone who experiences brain fog, puts it, We underestimate the demands of identifying a recipe, planning to purchase and locate items, gathering all items needed, following a sequence of steps, maintaining safety awareness, and timing everything appropriately. With brain fog, these steps can add up and quickly become overwhelming.

Set your space up for success

Keep track of time literally: Time everything and mark your timers, whether that means with a pen and a piece of painters tape, a sticky note on the microwave timer, or labeling the timer you set in your phone. Whiteboards with attached timers are a perfect solution for this.

Tips To Bake Like A Pro

Too often, I feel tips in cookbooks to be uninspired, but not in the King Arthur book. Every piece of extra information adds to my confidence and chance of success. Heres a few of my favorite tips:

If you want a crisp crust on a baguette, youll want to take one more step after it has finished cooking. As the bread cools on the counter, steam escapes from the center and condenses onto the crust. This softens the crust. To avoid that, remove the bread from the oven, take it out of the pan, and put it back in the now-turned-off oven with the door cracked.

To make diner-style pancakes, use malt powder instead of sugar in the batter. Then let it sit in the fridge for an hour to develop more flavor and fluffiness.

There are several charts in the book that I know I will continually refer to. The pie chart lists different fruit, their natural pectin levels, and various thickener agents. For example, Blueberries have a lot of pectin, so you need less thickener. I could use 1 T of flour, 2 teaspoons of Instant ClearJen or arrowroot, 2.5 teaspoons of cornstarch, 1.5 teaspoons of quick-cooking tapioca, or 4 teaspoons of King Arthurs pie filling enhancer.

Tips For Making King Arthurs Perfectly Pillowy Cinnamon Rolls

Bake for Good: Kids | King Arthur Flour

Before heading into the kitchen to make these cinnamon rolls, a few tips.1. Feel free to make them the night before. King Arthurs recipe says the rolls stay soft for multiple days , so feel free to make them in advance if you want to get a head-start on breakfast.2. Use dental floss to cut the cinnamon rolls. King Arthurs recipe recommends using floss to cut the cinnamon rolls, and I found this produced much cleaner cinnamon rolls. Using a knife tends to smash the rolls, ruining their perfect spiral shape.3. Feel free to make the cinnamon rolls a tiny bit smaller. This recipe makes eight very large cinnamon rolls. After reading the comments, I saw that some people made ten cinnamon rolls instead of eight. This would give you a more traditionally sized cinnamon roll, but you would have to reduce the baking time a tad so just keep an eye on them if so.4. Be careful not to overbake them. One of the biggest mistakes people make when making cinnamon rolls is overbaking them. My favorite way to tell if they are done is to use an instant-read thermometer to check the internal temperature of a roll. Once the center registers 190°F, they are done.

Bake For Good With King Arthur Flour

Recently King Arthur Flour gathered a group of PNW bloggers and we all made dinner for a shelter here in Seattle. It was part of their Bake for Good initiative to encourage and help people reach out to their communities in various ways. In addition to getting food to those in need, baking for community events and bake sales to raise money they also have a Bake for Good Kids traveling tour that helps kids learn to bake and work with their communities. In addition to all this King Arthur Flour is an employee owned company where each employee donates time each year to volunteering and helping the community. You know what? Theres been a lot of gloomy stuff going on in the news lately and being a part of the Bake for Good tour reminded me that there is plenty of goodness out there and sometimes you have to create it.

We spent some time in commercial kitchens which was a thrill for me. On the first day we made braided white loaves, dinner rolls and apple pies.

We braided white bread dough, you start from the center and braid down, then flip it over and braid down again. Not as easy as it sounds, at least the first time.

It rose! And got brown and pretty!

Ive never been able to get a handle on pie dough. Id seen plenty of demonstrations on cooking shows, Id done the vodka thing, the food processor thing but I never had any success and basically gave up on it. Turns out some hands on learning with a cheerfully helpful teacher is what I needed.
