Chicken thighs! Specifically, bone-in and skin-on chicken thighs will give you tender, juicy chicken with a deliciously sticky glaze. Drumsticks work well, too.
Boneless chicken thighs cook very quickly so if you use them the BBQ sauce won’t have a chance to get deeply caramelized. They’ll be good, but not as good.
Avoid using chicken breasts, except as a last resort. They tend to dry out with a long bake in the oven AND they release a lot of liquid so the BBQ sauce becomes watery rather than thick and sticky.
Bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs are best!

Why Cook The Chicken In The Sauce
Most BBQ baked chicken recipes call for the chicken to be baked first and the sauce added at the end. But in recipe testing, we found a better method.
Baking the chicken in the BBQ sauce the entire time allows the sauce to thicken and become deliciously sticky.
And don’t worry about the crispy skin. Even if you only baste the BBQ sauce on the skin at the last minute, it still won’t be anymore crispy than if you use our method.
But letting the chicken cook the entire time in the sauce lets the sauce get nice and thick and amazingly delicious.
What Cut Of Chicken Is Best To Use For Oven Bbq Chicken
For the juiciest, most tender oven bbq chicken, youre definitely going to want to use bone-in, skin on chicken pieces for this. I used a mix of thighs and drumsticks, and I do recommend using thighs and/or legs, since dark meat is harder to overcook and almost always tastes juicier than white.
Heres a general run-down of which cuts are worst and best for oven bbq chicken:
- Worst: boneless, skinless chicken breasts
- Not quite as bad: boneless, skinless chicken thighs
- Better: bone-in, skin on chicken breasts
- Best: bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs and/or legs
If you want to use chicken breasts, I recommend making sure you get bone-in, skin on breasts. Or at the very least, bone-in. The skin and the bone both help keep the chicken super juicy. And if you use dark meat as well, youve hit the trifecta! Using bone-in, skin on dark meat guarantees juicy, tender chicken every time. As a bonus: these pieces are generally a lot less expensive!

Are Chicken Tenders And Tenderloin The Same Thing
You can use chicken tenders for this recipe instead of chicken breast. Chicken tenders and chicken tenderloin are the same thing and come from the same part of the bird. They are just labeled differently in different parts of the country.
If you use chicken tenders, I recommend cutting off the white tendon that is attached at the top of the chicken tender before breading.
This part is tough when chewing and I prefer to remove it prior to cooking.

How Long Should You Cook Chicken In The Oven
Chicken Breasts Chicken breasts can be tricky to bake because they are very lean with little to no fat making it overcook them. Bake the bbq chicken in a preheated oven at 450 degrees for about 15 minutes or until the juices run clear and the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees. Baking your chicken breasts at a high temperature for a shorter amount of time ensures that they retain their moisture.
Chicken Thighs To bake boneless chicken thighs instead of breasts, preheat the oven to 450 degrees and just bake for a little longer, around 20-25 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees in the thickest part of the chicken. Chicken thighs have a higher fat content so you dont have to worry as much about them drying out. Bone-in chicken thighs will take an about 35-45 minutes.

Honey Bbq Baked Chicken Tenders
YIELD:Makes 4 servings
2 lbs. -skinless, boneless chicken tenders
1/2 cup -BBQ sauce
2/3 cup -whole wheat flour
1/3 cup -milk
2 1/2 cups -whole wheat Panko breadcrumbs
1/2 tsp. -salt
Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
Cover baking sheet with parchment paper.
In large bowl, mix flour and panko together with salt and pepper.
In another large bowl whip together BBQ sauce, milk, eggs and honey.
Dip tenders in BBQ/milk mixture and generously roll the chicken tenders in the Panko mix. Place the chicken strips on the baking sheet. Bake for 10 minutes. Flip tenders over and allow it to bake until cooked through and outside is crisp, about 10 minutes. Cook chicken tenders longer if you want more brown.
Serve with the Honey BBQ Dipping Sauce .
To make the Honey BBQ Dipping Sauce, combine the BBQ sauce and honey, stirring together until fully mixed.
Tip: Spray tenders with non-stick cooking spray to help them crisp up better.

Oven Baked Bbq Chicken
- 44-6 ounces each boneless, skinless chicken breasts
- 1/2teaspoonground black pepper
- 1/2teaspoononion powder
- 3/4cupbarbecue sauceuse your favorite
- Preheat oven to 450°F. Spray a baking dish with nonstick cooking spray.
- If your chicken breasts are not even thickness, pound them even, or slice them so they are uniform in size and thickness.
- Place beaten egg in a shallow dish.
- Place breadcrumbs and spices in another shallow dish stir to combine.
- Dip each chicken breast in the egg then in the breadcrumbs, coating both sides with the crumbs. Place in an even layer in the baking dish.
- Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the chicken looks golden and crisp. Do not turn.
- Pour the BBQ sauce evenly over the chicken and continue baking for 5-10 minutes or until sauce is bubbly and chicken is cooked through.

Whenever Im in a rut and cant think of what to make with my boneless, skinless chicken breasts, I always default to my easy chicken making method. This easy recipe is versatile and can be made so many different ways and the chicken comes out perfect every time.
This BBQ chicken recipe is a spinoff of my easy chicken parmesan and my baked taco chicken. It starts with chicken breasts that are lightly breaded then baked. Halfway through baking you add barbecue sauce on top and the chicken finishes cooking and gets all flavorful and saucy at the same time.
Plus, since this is oven baked BBQ chicken, you can make it all year long!
Easy Baked Chicken Tenders
A wholesome twist on the classic favorite chicken tenders….I personally would prefer these baked over fried any day!

|vegetable cooking spray|
|1 egg, beaten|
|1 ¼ cups panko bread crumbs|
|2 teaspoons garlic powder|
|1 teaspoon ground black pepper|
|4 skinless, boneless chicken tenders, cut into 1/2-inch strips lengthwise|
- Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F . Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and spray with cooking spray.
- Place egg in a shallow dish. Place bread crumbs, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper into a large zip-top freezer bag and mix well. Dip 2 chicken strips into egg and then place into bread crumb mixture and shake to coat. Place coated chicken pieces onto the prepared baking sheet. Repeat with remaining chicken.
- Spray each chicken tender with cooking spray 2 times.
- Bake tenders in the preheated oven for 7 minutes flip, continue to bake on opposite side until no longer pink in the centers, about 7 minutes more. Remove from the oven.
- Set an oven rack about 6 inches from the heat source and preheat the oven’s broiler.
- Broil tenders in the preheated oven for extra crunch, about 2 minutes more.

How To Make Baked Bbq Chicken Tenders:
Step one: Start by preheating your oven to 375 degrees F. Then prepare a 2 quart casserole dish with nonstick cooking spray and set it aside.
Step two: Place chicken tenders in a large baggy with oil and massage into chicken. Add in paprika, garlic powder, and salt. Massage chicken tenders again and dump everything into a casserole dish.
Step three: Bake for 20 minutes then remove the chicken tenders and brush with bbq sauce. Place back into the oven for 10 -15 minutes or until chicken is cooked through.
Step four: Remove from oven and let rest before serving.

How To Freeze Homemade Chicken Tenders
If you want to make these in larger batches for easy meals down the road, you can do that with just a few steps. There are two methods that work well, and it depends upon whether you want them pre-cooked to just reheat or raw to bake once ready to serve.
Prepare up to the point of baking, and lay on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Cover loosely then freeze for 2 hours until mostly solid. Place the tenders into a freezer storage bag or container, then date and label. Freeze for up to 4 months. When ready to bake, remove from the freezer, and bake at 400°F for 18 to 20 minutes until 165°F internally.
Prepare and bake as directed. Allow the chicken tenders to cool completely, then place them into freezer storage bags or containers. Date and label and freeze for up to 4 months. When ready to eat, remove from the freezer and bake at 450° for 8 to 10 minutes or microwave until heated through.
