Baking barbecue chicken in the oven is really no more complicated than throwing it on the grill and just as delicious!

The pan gets pretty saucy and forms lots of caramelized bits under the high heat, but it doesnt effect the chicken at all if anything it adds to the flavor and moisture of the finished chicken thighs.

You can place the chicken thighs on a baking rack over the sheet pan, but I dont find it necessary. And skipping that step means less dishes to wash when youre done.

One thing I dont recommend skipping is lining your baking sheet. Parchment paper is my preference by aluminum foil also works. It will keep the caramelized bits from sticking to your baking sheet for easier clean up.

    Heres the step-by-step

What Kind Of Baking Sheet Should I Use

I cannot recommend enough using a Nordic Ware Natural Aluminum Bakers Half Sheet to make this oven baked BBQ chicken, and to roast literally anything you want. I have two and they are the ONLY baking sheets I will EVER use. Theyre super sturdy, so they dont buckle when the temperature changes . And they conduct heat well to make sure that your food is well cooked on the top and bottom, and they are really good at being non-stick, even though they dont have any non-stick coating .

PLUS, they are only around $12! Go get one!

If you prefer to bake the chicken on a rack, so it doesnt sit in the juices the whole time and crisps up a bit better, this rack nestles in perfectly to the rimmed baking sheet .

Why Cook The Chicken In The Sauce

Most BBQ baked chicken recipes call for the chicken to be baked first and the sauce added at the end. But in recipe testing, we found a better method.

Baking the chicken in the BBQ sauce the entire time allows the sauce to thicken and become deliciously sticky.

And don’t worry about the crispy skin. Even if you only baste the BBQ sauce on the skin at the last minute, it still won’t be anymore crispy than if you use our method.

But letting the chicken cook the entire time in the sauce lets the sauce get nice and thick and amazingly delicious.

How To Make The Best Baked Bbq Chicken Thighs

Making great tasting BBQ chicken thighs in the oven may seem like a simple thing, but its not. Just slapping some tasty BBQ sauce on some thighs and baking them wont do the trick. You really need to build the layers of flavor and texture to get those amazing BBQ chicken thighs. That said, once you know a few tricks, the process becomes as easy as pie.

First, you need to bake the thighs on convection at a very high heat. This will do two things the thighs will cook quickly, resulting in a very juicy meat, while the skin will be nicely browned and crisped up. Using a little bit of baking powder will help get an even crispier skin. According to Cooks Illustrated, tossing chicken thighs with baking powder and salt helps break down the proteins within the skin, as well as aiding in browning. So, do not skip that baking powder. Ive used it on chicken wings and chicken thighs before and it works like magic.

Second, once the skin is nice and crispy, you brush the thighs with the BBQ sauce and bake again for a short while. What this does is it thickens and caramelizes the sauce, making it more intensely flavored and tastier. Cooking on convection helps with caramelization of the sauce, creating some charred spots here and there. This makes chicken thighs taste almost like grilled ones.

Thats all there is to it. Its not exactly simple but it becomes very easy once you know the process.
