How Baked Dog Foods Are Different

The early stages of this process are the same for baked dog foods. The ingredients for the food are mixed together. However, baked dog food does not use an expander and it is not cooked with steam or under pressure.

Pet foods that are oven baked are typically baked more slowly in an oven. They are cooked for a longer period of time than extruded pet foods. They do not use steam or high temperatures.

For example, Oven-Baked Tradition, from Canada, states that it takes 10 times longer to slow-bake their foods compared to making extruded pet food. They also state that slow baking allows nutrients to be easily digested.

And they point out that the high temperatures of extrusion cooking affects vitamins that are sensitive to high temperatures, which, of course, is true.

Why Is It Healthy

Lower calories and lower fat. Both good things.

There seems to be as much BS about dog diets as human diets. If your dog is gluten intolerant, but they are not gluten allergic just because they are a dog.

I closed this post to comments. People keep posting unproven personal opinion as facts. This is “bad,” but this is “good”… things should always be so black and white.

You can not believe everything you read on the internet and even in the comments here. If you have concerns about your individual pet’s nutrition, then please discuss it with your vet.

How To Make Peanut Butter Banana Dog Treats

For these treats, Ive used old-fashioned oats instead of flour as the base. Youll need to grind the oats a bit to make them finer.

You can see how finely the oats are ground in this photo. There are still a few pieces of oat in the mix, it is not as fine as flour.

  • Run the food processor for a few minutes to break up the oats.
  • Once you have ground the oats into a finer texture, add the banana, egg and peanut butter.
  • Blend until the dough is uniform. If your dough is a bit too dry, add in a tablespoon of water at a time until you reach the desired consistency.
  • Then turn the dough out onto a floured countertop to roll out and cut treats.
  • Place treats on parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 16 18 minutes.
  • To make these treats shiny on top, I brushed them with an egg wash. I dont normally do this, but I wanted to make them pretty for the photos.

If you are giving them away, its a nice touch and it makes them look extra special.

Are Baked Dog Foods Better Than Other Dog Foods

Before we answer this question , we need to explain that the more foods are processed and cooked, the more easily they are digested, in general.

We know that this flies in the face of what many people believe, but its true. If you feed two similarly healthy dogs a raw steak and a bowl of kibble, it will take longer for the dog to digest the raw steak, even though the raw steak may be natural food for your dog.

30% Off at Chewy.comHow To Redeem This Offer

If you think about this scientifically, you can see why this is true. Kibble is made up of ingredients that have already been processed, cooked, and broken down.

Raw food, by contrast, is not processed. Your dogs gastrointestinal system has to do all of the work so it takes longer to digest something raw.

What does this have to do with extruded vs. baked dog food? Well, baked dog food takes hours longer to cook before its bagged and sent to the pet store. Extruded foods are cooked relatively quickly, though they are cooked at high temperatures and under high steam pressure. Most companies that make oven-baked dog foods do claim that their foods are easier for dogs to digest.

Flint River Ranch twice-baked their foods slowly. They claimed that this approach made hard-to-digest molecules of raw starches into something that was easier to digest and acted as a pre-digest of the kibble. Per Flint River Ranch, it put less strain on the dogs digestive system and allowed the dog to absorb more of the food.

    Other Factors To Consider

Of course, digestion isnt everything. According to an article from Petfoodindustry.com, Drying petfood at high temperatures may decrease nutrients, researchers find, researchers at one university in the Netherlands studied drying temperatures and the amount of time spend drying on the foods nutrition.

Their experiments tested extruded foods. Researchers said that drying pet foods at high temperatures of 320-360 F can significantly reduce nutrients or nutrient reactivity.

You might surmise from this study that the nutrients in oven-baked foods could be affected by temperatures and the length of time the food was cooked. Some oven-baked foods do note that their foods are cooked at lower temperatures, so this might be something to look for if you are interested in an oven-baked dog food.

Otherwise, we think its impossible to say that all oven-baked foods are better than extruded foods or vice versa. Factors such as ingredients and their sources, the dry matter basis of protein, fat, and the percentage of carbohydrates in the food, the manufacturer and their reputation all play a role in determining how good the dog food turns out to be.

Is Peanut Butter Safe For Dogs

There has been some discussion on whether or not peanut butter is safe for dogs. I always do research before even thinking about feeding Scout something that could be toxicshes my girl!!

Peanut butter is actually a healthy food for dogs, containing vitamins and healthy fats. As always, moderation is key. Dogs can be allergic to things just like people.

If you feel uncomfortable using peanut butter, other great alternatives would be pumpkin or sweet potato. Let me know if you have questions!

How To Make Dog Treats At Home

I made these Homemade Dog Treats with peanut butter, but you could substitute other pet friendly flavors. Sweet potato or pumpkin would make great substitutions!

The dough for these dog biscuits is very firm and sticky, but dont let that scare you! Youre making it right! I rolled my dough to about half an inch thick before cutting out the shapes, and they turned out great.

The dough only rises slightly, so you can cut out almost any shape and it will hold.

How To Store Homemade Dog Treats

    Lily

If you live in a cooler, less humid climate, you can store these treats in a cute dog treat jar on the counter for a few days, before moving them to the fridge or freezer.

However, I recommend storing them in the refrigerator for up to a week or so. You can also freeze them and take out a few at a time, which is what I do most of the time.

Keep a handful in an airtight container or zip-top bag in the fridge and store the remaining treats in the freezer for up to 3 months.
