Using a meat thermometer is the best way to tell if a pork chop is done. The internal of a pork chop should be 145-160°F for safe consumption. For pork chops, an internal temperature of 145°F is medium-rare and 160°F is medium-well.

Alternatively, if you don’t have a meat thermometer, you can cut into the center of the pork chop to check the color. The pork chop is fully cooked when the meat is white. If the meat is pink or bloody, it is not done and needs to cook longer.

You literally just throw all the ingredients in a plastic storage bag, shake it up and bake.

Ingredients in homemade shake n bake. All of the ingredients I generally have on hand in my pantry, Breadcrumbs, Garlic Powder, Italian Seasoning, Onion Powder, Paprika, Salt, Celery Salt, and Black Pepper.

However, there are a few tips to help you achieve a juicy meat and crispy outside crust.

Choosing the meat. Choose a chop that is 1/2-inch to 1-inch thick. They can be a bone-in pork chops, boneless pork chops, or even a pork loin sliced in. Grocery stores have a lot of options to choose from. If they are not an even thickness, or if you have thick pork chops, go ahead, and use a mallet to pound them a bit so they are even and the correct thickness. It will assure that they cook properly.

Pat the meat dry. For best results, use a few paper towels to pat the chops dry before adding to the plastic bag. This helps the breading stick.

Add a light coating of Olive Oil. It might seem counterintuitive but brushing the meat with a thin coating of olive oil before shaking them in the breadcrumb mixture helps it stick to the meat better. You could use an egg wash, but I have found the best way is to use the olive oil. The breading mixture seems to stick better when using the oil coating.

Let the meat rest. Once they reach the internal temperature, remove them from the oven and let them rest 10 minutes before serving. This helps the juice remain for a succulent chop.

How Do You Make Shake And Bake Pork Chops Not Soggy

Oven-fried pork chops need to be cooked at a higher temperature, 425 degrees is recommended. I like to use pork chops that are bone-in for better flavor, but pork loin chops will also work just fine. I like to use chops that are about 3/8-inch, if your pork chops are thicker, or thinner, you will need to adjust the time.

It is important if the chops are thicker, that you reduce the temperature to around 400 and cook for 5 to 10 minutes longer. It is important to check and make sure pork is cooked to 145-155 degrees. Be sure to let the meat rest for a few minutes before serving. This way the juices will redistribute, and you will have juicy pork chops everyone will love!

    When preparing the homemade breading, I find the largest difference between breadcrumbs from a can, and the mix from Shake N Bake is that the packaged mix has finer ground breadcrumbs. If you want a more exact mix, I suggest you mix the breading in a food processor to emulate the packaged mix.

    But mixing everything in a bowl will work just fine. You may even want to make breadcrumbs by hand before preparing this recipe.

    The pork chops I used for this recipe were ¾ inch thick, which wouldnt be considered thin or thick cut.

    Thin pork chops are usually between inch and ¼ inch thick, while thick-cut pork chops are over 1 inch thick.

    Why Should I Brine My Pork Chops

    Pork chops are notorious for ending up dry and bland. Brining in a saltwater bath for at least 15 minutes will allow moisture to be drawn into the meat making it more juicy and flavorful.

    I like to brine my pork chops for at least a couple of hours to see some breakdown of muscle tissues and even more moisture, but a quick soak should do the trick as long as you promise not to overcook the pork as well. Trust me, this makes a difference and requires no special equipment or skill.

    This recipe uses a few aromatics in addition to the salt and water, but feel free to only use salt and water if you need or desire.

    How To Coat The Meat In Breading

    Take some of the breading and dump it into a bag. The amount needed will vary depending on the amount of meat you need to coat. I use about 1 1/2 cups for 8 pork chops.

    Add one piece of meat at a time . Twist the one end of the bag to seal it and then shake the bag to ensure that the meat is coated on all sides with the seasoned breading.

    Pro Tip:I find that trying to make sure there is plenty of air in the bag when twisting the opening, will allow the breading to shake around more and makes the coating easier.

    Once the meat is coated in the breading, take it out of the bag and place it on a baking sheet. Continue coating the rest of the pieces of meat. Make sure that the meat is evenly spaced apart on the baking sheet.

    Pro Tip:I like to line the baking sheet with a silicone mat or parchment paper so that the breading will not stick to the metal sheet during baking.

    How To Store Leftovers:

    • Store: After they cool to room temperature, you can store your leftover shake n bake pork chops in an airtight container or gallon size zip baggie in the fridge for up to four days.
