Bush’s Smoker Baked Beans | THE BEST RECIPE

This recipe is EASY and uses simple ingredients like canned beans!

Because I live in the middle of nowhere and cant go to the grocery store Im going to share suggestions for substituting. Just in case you dont want to make another trip to the store either!

  • Pork and Beans Any brand of canned beans will work. My favorite is Van Camps. The store brands have too much sauce and not enough beans.
  • Brown Sugar Dark or light, I like dark best. You can also use honey.
  • Ketchup If you dont have ketchup use BBQ sauce
  • Molasses Theres really not a substitute for this one, but it keeps for a long time!
  • Worcestershire if you dont have it just skip it.
  • Bacon I really like frying extra and keeping it in the fridge for recipes like this. We also really like using pre-cooked and crumbled storebought bacon. Just make sure its real bacon! If youre really in a pinch you can add sausage or pancetta.
  • Cinnamon Youll just need a dash, it adds the BEST flavor! Trust me!
  • Optional if you want you can add pineapple

One day, I came across a brand of baked beans I felt I could work with. Now I have two recipes for these types of beans. One is a heavier non smoked Boston Candy-ized Bean. The other is lighter but it is smoked. The recipe below is for the smoked/ lighter bean.

  • Gather your ingredients for smoked baked beans. Combine the BBQ sauce, ketchup, molasses, Dr. Pepper, brown sugar, and BBQ rub in a medium-sized bowl. Set aside.
  • Next, heat the oil in your cast-iron skillet. Add the onions to the pan and cook over medium heat for 2 minutes. Next, add the minced garlic, and continue cooking for 30 seconds.
  • Add the baked beans to the pan and pour the BBQ sauce mixture over them.
  • Add your choice of meat and stir it all together.
  • Take the entire pan out to the smoker. Set it into your pellet grill, close the lid, and let the baked beans cook for 1 1/2 to 2 hours at 250 degrees F.

    Weve discovered that by adding some additional ingredients to canned baked beans and cooking it on the smoker, we can have a barbecue side dish that just might give the main dish a run for its money.

    This recipe really is almost as easy as opening a can of beans, but its a million times better! Here are are the step by step instructions on how I make em!

    STEP 1: Mix all ingredients together. Be gentle so you dont smash the beans.

    What Pan Should I Use

    • Disposable aluminum foil pans are my favorite because you cant beat how easy the cleanup is.
    • A cast iron skillet is a classic and gives the beans the best flavor. Plus, it holds heat and keeps the beans warm after you take them off the smoker.
    • You can use a glass baking dish, although it might leave soot on the bottom of the pan. I use one glass pan specifically for smoking.

    Heres How To Make It:

  • For a Big Green Egg or Kamado type grill, soak one cup of wood chips in water for one hour. Light the charcoal and when it comes up to 250 degrees F., scatter the drained wood chips over the fire. Add the grill grate. You do not need to use the plate setter for this recipe.
  • For any other type of grill or smoker, follow the manufacturers directions to prepare it for smoking and preheat it to 250 degrees F.
  • While your grill or smoker preheats, place the bacon in a cold 12-inch, cast-iron skillet on the stove over medium heat. Pan-fry for about 10 minutes, or until the bacon is golden-brown and crispy. Remove the bacon from the pan and drain it on paper towels. Roughly chop and set aside.
  • Add the chopped onions and peppers to the bacon grease in the pan and cook until the onions are translucent, which should take six to seven minutes.
  • Add the baked beans, ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, barbecue sauce, and cumin, and mix well. Bring to a boil and remove from the heat.
  • Place the pan in the smoker and close the lid. Plan to smoke the beans for at least one hour or more for maximum smoky flavor.
  • Remove the beans from the smoker and top with chopped bacon. Serve warm or at room temperature.

    How Long To Smoke Baked Beans

    Lets get to the real question of this post: how long to smoke baked beans. Depending on your smokers temperature, the time it takes to make a perfect dish of smoked baked beans will vary. The ideal smoking temperature for baked beans ranges from 225°F to 250°F.

    At 225°F, your baked beans will usually need to sit in the smoker for about 2-3 hours. To save time, you can increase the temperature to 250°F, which reduces the smoking time to about 1 hour and 30 minutes.

    However, some recipes recommend smoking baked beans at 250°F for 2-3 hours. Whatever recipe you choose to follow, always make sure that the bacon and beans are cooked to the right degree of doneness.

    Ideally, the bacon strips should have most of their fat melted down and are golden brown on the edges. At the same time, the beans should already be thickened when you take them out of the smoker.

    When it comes to smoking baked beans, you can virtually use any type of beans that you like. But you need to be able to differentiate between pinto bean and black beans or other bean varieties with similar appearance to know which one is the best for your dish.

    Navy beans have long been a crowd-favorite thanks to their tender texture and delightful, nutty taste. You can make this dish will cannelini beans as well. Baked kidney, northern, butter, borlotti, or pinto beans will also make for an excellent smoking choice.

    You know its a great recipe if it starts with 10 slices of bacon, right?! Cut the bacon right into a 12 inch cast iron skillet over medium heat.

    The bacon will cook for 4 to 5 minutes, then remove it from the skillet. Also remove most of the bacon grease, but leave some in the skillet.

    In the same skillet with some bacon grease, add a diced onion and cook the onion for a few minutes.

    Next up is adding three big cans of baked beans, I like using Bushs Original beans.

    Then add the cooked bacon, yellow mustard, BBQ sauce, worchestire sauce, and brown sugar.

    Give it a stir and its ready for the smoker.

    Place on a smoker set to 250 degrees right in the cast iron skillet.

    If you dont have a cast iron skillet, its okayjust put the beans in a foil pan.

    We were already using the smoker for two pork shoulders, so this worked out perfectly they could all smoke at the same time

    Smoked Brisket Baked Beans Recipe In A Dutch Oven

    This Brisket Baked Beans Recipe made in a Dutch Oven is heavenly! Now I always pick up the largest cut of meat when picking out my meat. These beans can be made in any type of smoker either electric, charcoal, or pellet. My current main go-to smoker is my Pit Boss Pro 1100, cooking low and slow is how I prefer to cook with it. I picked up mine at Lowes, but Walmart and Amazon carry other Pit Boss options or Pit Boss website themselves, I love the cost of them vs other pellet grills.

    Brisket Baked Beans Recipe Ingredients:

    • 27 Oz Can Bushs Chili Beans With Mild Chili Sauce
    • 16 Oz Can Butter Beans
    • 28 Oz Can Hickory Brown Sugar Bushs Baked Beans
    • 1 l Ground Drained Ground Beef
    • 1 Lb Bacon Sliced Partially Cooked And Drained
    • 2 Tsp Minced Onion
    • 1/2 Cup Brown Sugar
    • 2 Tsp White Vinegar

    If you are using a cast iron dutch oven wipe it down with oil so as to help make sure that it is ready to cook without having stuff stick. I use an old cast iron dutch oven the old lady picked up for $5 and has worked amazing! An Enameled Cast Iron would work as well just know that the smoke may stain the enamel of the dutch oven.

    How To Make Brisket Baked Beans In A Dutch Oven:

    Start out with leftover smoked brisket, I used my Jack and Coke Brisket in this recipe.

    Cut the leftover brisket into small pieces, I did use fatty pieces in this to add flavor as well.

    Start-up your smoker to get the smoke rolling! I set my Pit Boss Pro 1100 to a smoke setting of P4 for the smoke setting.
