Gramma Bear Bakes Big

A grandma from Malakwa had the time of her life on a Food Network baking show with $10,000 up for grabs.

Her team, Triple Treats, consisted of her friend Karen Huntley and her cousin Chrissy Cummings, who are both bakers and cake decorators.

The episode was filmed in February in Toronto.

During the competition, teams were given five hours to design, bake and decorate a grand-scale cake creation based on a holiday theme.

In Letendres episode, titled At Home with Santa, their theme was what would Santa and Ms. Claus do on their day off?

Team Triple Treats created a hot tub party themed cake that stood taller than five feet.

Letendre describes the flavour as hot chocolate, with whipped caramel, butter-fried hazelnuts, topped with marshmallow icing and brushed with Irish cream.

Despite the stressful environment of being in a baking competition, Letendre says the team had an incredible time.

Theres a lot of stress. Things dont always go right and its not your kitchen, you have to just go with it, says Letendre.

Youre just laughing so hard the whole time, theres nothing else you can do.

At one point, host Eddie Jackson came over when Letendre said its a hot tub party, and the judges are invited and then began dancing with the team.

Letendre also described the sweet moment her grandchild saw her on TV.

Letendre said her interest in baking piqued when she would help her mother bake as a child.

I still have that cook book.

That was definitely the biggest cake that weve ever made, Raquel David said. The finished cake itself was about 5.5 feet tall.

David is the winner of this years The Big Bake: Halloween competition, which aired on Food Network on Sept. 27. In the episode, teams of bakers made gigantic cakes that move for a $10,000 prize.

As the owner of Kitchener-Waterloo bake shop Qs Cakes and Cafe, David competed on a team with coworkers Carolyn and Monica. Its really nice to know that if you work with the right people and put your mind to something, you can accomplish it even in a short amount of time, David said.

Teams were given five hours to finish their creations. It was stressful to make such a big cake in such a short amount of time, David said. But the overall experience was really exciting.

The result was a 5.5 foot zombie wedding cake complete with roses, spiders and a large bride and groom topper- whose mouths open and shut. It had chocolate and pumpkin buttercream layers, with bourbon simple syrup drizzled on top. In addition, there were also traces of candied hazelnuts and bourbon caramel in the cake.

I thought both the other contestants cakes were really neat, David said. The one with the gnomes was very cleanly finished, and had lots of attention to detail. And the Corpse Bride was such a cool idea to do a person standing five feet out of cake was a really big task to undertake.

When talking to David, the charm of Qs Cakes was clear.
