Even before he joined his father’s firm, Michael Wilens was planning its expansion into a new area of law. So, he explained, ”I called my subway distributor.”
Five years later, there isn’t a subway-riding adult in New York who hasn’t seen an ad for 1-800-DIVORCE, with the O formed by a diamond ring and a woman’s hand to the side making a tossing motion. ”When diamonds aren’t forever,” the poster says. There is also 1-800-INNOCENT , with two cuffed hands and a chain.
The Manhattan firm at the other end of the phones, Wilens & Baker, also has 1-800-IMMIGRATION and, as of last month, 1-800-BANKRUPT.
And it’s been fun, Mr. Wilens said. But now, while the 1-800 posters will live on, he is trying something subtler, with dignified pastels and a simple logo designed to send a message to those who wonder: What kind of law firm rents subway space amid all those pitches to a public troubled by warts and hammertoes? What kind of client dials 1-800-DIVORCE?
The law firm is a business that practices economies of scale and computer technology. It has 17 lawyers the kind who wear suspenders. Its offices at Seventh Avenue and 34th Street — 13 subway lines within a block — are all cool and spare, charcoal and beige, with nothing lavish.
