The Mount Baker Theatre
In the early 20th century, Bellingham was a fast-growing town. The coal, lumber, and salmon canning industries were bringing economic growth. After the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906, large areas of forest were clearcut to provide lumber to rebuild the city, creating jobs. Bellingham was an immigrant destination as Indians and Asians flocked to the city. Racial tensions became tense, until they finally boiled over during the Bellingham Riots of 1907, driving hundreds of immigrants out of town.
Bellinghams rapid growth necessitated the need for an entertainment venue. The Mount Baker Theatre was built in 1927. Architect Robert Reamer was called upon to design the theatre and chose the Spanish-Moorish architectural style. Reamer also designed the 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle, but his most well-known work is the Old Faithful Inn in Yellowstone National Park.
The Mount Baker Theatre was built at the tail end of the vaudeville and silent movie era. The Jazz Singer, one of the first talkies to be widely distributed, was released during the theatres opening year and ushered in the era of motion pictures. As the movie industry exploded during the Great Depression, five other theatres were built in Bellingham.
After World War II, the move towards television left many theatres high and dry. Most of the theatres around Bellingham closed down for good. The Mount Baker Theatre survived by converting its space to also host operas, orchestras, and live performances.
City Updates Rates For Public Electric Vehicle Charging Stations
Legal framework, updated rates support expansion of Citys EV charging network
New EV charger installed as part of a City project to expand EV charging infrastructure in Bellingham.
Bellingham City Council took final action this week to establish a legal framework for City-owned electric vehicle charging stations and update rates for the use of these stations.
The collected fees will cover current electricity costs for the City and anticipated system maintenance. These actions, introduced at the , will help support the planned expansion of the Citys EV charging network in the year ahead.
We are adding 90 new publicly accessible charging plugs throughout the City in the next year, Bellingham Mayor Seth Fleetwood said. Operating an EV charging network is a new endeavor for the City. Adding charging stations and setting equitable rates are key steps in encouraging residents to buy electric vehicles and help reduce community carbon emissions.
EV drivers can expect to see the new rates applied at existing City-owned EV charging stations this week. There are currently three City-owned EV chargers that will be impacted by the rates two in the Commercial Street parking garage and one at Depot Market Square. The new EV charging rates are:
- Base rate of $0.25 per kWh
- Surcharge of $1.00 per session for use of DC fast charger
- Surcharge of $0.25 per minute for occupying parking space after vehicle charging is complete, not to exceed $23.00

Yellowstone Park Company And The Northern Pacific Railroad
The was commissioned in 1902 by Child, and funded with loans from the , using laborers who were experienced railroad trestle builders. Child introduced Reamer to , president of the Northern Pacific.
While he was carrying out design work on the Old Faithful Inn for Child, Reamer was also designing the for the Northern Pacific, at the northern entrance to Yellowstone National Park. The depot and the Inn were complementary projects, and similar in style. The depot opened first, in 1903, and embodied many design features that Reamer explored on a grander scale at the Old Faithful Inn.
The Ghosts Of Mount Baker Theatre
Its said that just about every theatre in America is haunted, and Mount Baker is no exception. The theatre will celebrate its centennial in 2027, and any building that old has just got to be haunted! Right?
The story goes that a woman named Judy lived on the land that is today occupied by the Mount Baker Theatre. She was known to be quite a flirt and had the hearts of several young men in the neighborhood. Unfortunately for Judy, the city razed her home to build the Mount Baker Theatre, and she never really got over it. Her ghost is said to haunt the theatre to this day. Even the renovations didnt shake her from her old home.
Judy is most often seen on the balcony, though shes appeared all over the theatre. She especially likes to chase after the male employees, flirting and attempting to seduce them. Ushers, servers, projectionists theyve all claimed to have been seduced by Judy the ghost.
Other ghosts are known to haunt the Mount Baker Theatre. The spirit of a feral cat in the basement has been seen hunting mice and disappears into thin air when approached by human observers. A man in a pin-striped tuxedo named Geoffrey has also been spotted around the theatre.

The Mount Baker was one of many vaudeville houses operating in Bellingham, WA, during the 1910s-1920s it opened 04/29/1927. The Fox Theatres chain operated the Mount Baker at one time live musical performances were held here in the 1930s, and the Mount Baker was one of several small theatres in a regional circuit Judy Garland, for example, performed on a Pacific Northwest vaudeville circuit that included the Paramount Theatre, Seattle, WA , Mount Baker Theatre, Bellingham, WA , Empire Theatre, Yakima, WA , Liberty Theatre, Wenatchee, WA, , and the Orpheum Theater, Spokane, WA, . Canadian owners had purchased the theatre in the mid-1980s in 2007, the City of Bellingham owned the building.
The Mount Baker accommodated 1,509 patrons. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The theatre is a relatively scarce example of the Spanish Colonial Revival Style in the Pacific Northwest it is distinguished by its tall tower, topped with Spanish tile.
Longtime manager Leroy Kastner worked to prevent the Skouras Brothers from “modernizing” the Mount Baker Theatre in the late 1940s. Its latest restoration ended in 1996. The Bellingham architect James Zervas was instrumental in saving the theatre from demolition and for renovating it as a community performing arts center.

The Nutcracker Comes To Bellingham
