SOUTHAMPTON, NY A beloved local Hamptons bake shop known for its mouthwatering cookies is set to be sold for $500 million.
Mondelz International announced Monday that it would acquire Tates Bake Shop, which has locations in Southampton, Westhampton and Center Moriches.
According to a release, Mondelz International has an agreement with The Riverside Company, a global private equity firm, and other shareholders, including founder Kathleen King, to acquire Tates Bake Shop.

King’s previous book, Kathleen’s Bake Shop Cookbook , is one of the most solid baking books out there its no-frillsand no-failrecipes were inspired by the mouthwatering fare served at the author’s old Southampton, N.Y., bakery, Kathleen’s Bake Shop. Tate’s Bake Shop In Southampton Is In Seriously Hot Water
Well this isn’t what we would have expected from the beloved local cookie brand.
Tate’s Bake Shop, whose familiar green bags of cookies and baked goods can be found stocking shelves across the country, is in seriously hot water after staff members of their quaint Southampton flagship store say they’ve been threatened with deportation if they unionize.
According to reports, workers at the company, many of whom are undocumented, had been planning to unionize before the pandemic, but in the wake of COVID, and following a year of inadequate safety and support from the company, efforts ramped up to achieve better conditions.
In response, the company’s management allegedly warned workers that if their immigration status wasn’t in order they were going to be “sent back,” a union delegate told Gothamist.
âPeople are scared to talk,â said one Tate’s employee. âTheyâre scared to express themselves.â
Originally founded in Southampton in 2000, Tate’s was acquired by multinational snack company Mondelez in 2018 for $500 million.
A spokesperson for Mondelez told News 12 in Long Island, “Any allegation that the company has violated any aspect of the National Labor Relations Act is untrue. Tate’s prides itself on treating all its employees with respect, and we have fostered over many years an inclusive, supportive, caring work environment and culture with our employees.”

Tates Bake Shop Allegedly Threatening To Deport Workers Trying To Unionize
Long Island-based cookie brand Tates Bake Shop is allegedly threatening to deport workers who are trying to unionize, News 12 in Long Island reports.
Employees tell the news station that the company, which largely employs undocumented workers at its Southampton shop, has been harassing staffers and telling them that if their documents are not in order and they attempted to join the labor union they would get deported, says Cosmo Lubrano, the president of the Eastern States Joint Board of the International Union of Allied, Novelty and Production Workers. It is illegal under the National Labor Relations Act for a company to harass workers attempting to unionize.
According to a Gothamist report, employees had been talking about unionizing prior to the pandemic, but efforts ramped up last summer. Employees allegedly werent offered adequate support during the pandemic, including clarity around paid time off to self-quarantine, and access to safety equipment, which further fueled interest in unionization.
Snack behemoth Mondelez, which acquired Tates Bake Shop in a $500 million deal in 2018, said in a statement to News 12 that the allegations of worker harassment due to unionization efforts are untrue. Workers have until April 21st to vote on whether or not to unionize.

In 1980, King turned her passion for baking into a career, and opened her first bakery called Kathleens Bake Shop she later launched Tates, which grew become wildly successful. Even chef and talk show host Rachel Ray named her chocolate chip cookie the Best Cookie in America.

Whole Foods Market was the first nationwide retailer to carry the cookies, beginning December 1. The cookies will also be available here, on Amazon, in select regional grocery stores and at Tates Bake Shop in Southampton.
