Business Challenges In South Lansing
Johnson grew up in south Lansing and wanted to serve the community
People were happy we were there. They no longer had to travel long distances, he said.
But many residents had gotten used to traveling out of their neighborhood over the past several years, Johnson said. They didn’t always stop to look.
The traffic flow is very fast, Johnson said. Driving 45 miles per hour, its hard to see whats going on. They jump on the highway, and they go elsewhere.
Johnson added the south Lansing location required prospective customers to do more walking than his Kalamazoo Street location, and he had a hard time finding and keeping reliable employees.
Trying to keep staff and retraining staff is difficult, he said. Not a lot of people were invested in their jobs.

Creating A South Mlk Corridor Improvement Authority
The challenges experienced by south Lansing business owners are why Lansing Economic Area Partnership, Johnson and other stakeholders proposed establishing a committee to advocate for and enhance the look of south MLK.
If approved by the City Council, the South Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard Corridor Improvement Authority would include business owners and residents who will promote redevelopment and economic growth.
Its a non-profit. It might not be able to fix problems right away, but it gives a platform for community stakeholders to voice their problems, said Anum Mughal, manager of new ventures at LEAP.
She added the group intends to seek out private-public partnerships and do a feasibility study. The group also wants to improve streetscapes, landscapes and transportation.
The City Council will consider final approval in December, Hussain said.
I do believe there is much more support than opposition, he said.
The possibility of the authority gives Johnson hope that hell be able to reopen Bake N Cakes South someday.
I believe in south Lansing, Johnson said. We are going to pause and watch the economic outlook of the corridor. It could take a year or two years.

I ordered a anniversary cake for my husband and sent them a photo of our original wedding cake to remake. Not only did it not look the same, they left the floral decorations off the top of the cake- the one piece that was most recognizable on our cake. I was so upset and Bake N Cakes didn’t do anything to fix the situation when I called. So disappointed.

I brought in a picture of what I wanted for my daughter’s Birthday cake and they were very accommodating. The cake looked perfect and my daughter loved it! Thank you!

Road Construction Woes On Mlk
Johnsons staff announced the closing of the south Lansing Bake N Cakes shop on Facebook.
It is with much sadness to announce that we will be closing the South location Saturday. There were many factors involved in this difficult decision, they wrote. As always your favorite cakes, cupcakes and cookies are available at the Central store. Thank you to all the customers we’ve had the pleasure of meeting, Melanie, Tyler, Kevin and myself will miss you. Thanks, Mike.
The post prompted Lansing City Councilmember Adam Hussain, who represents southwest Lansing, to visit Johnson and his staff.
I talked with the owner and employees. Its tough for them. It was hard to get to that business, Hussain said. I went to other properties asking how they are doing. Everyone said they are struggling because of the road construction.
Michigan Department of Transportation sent out letters in April and May notifying business owners about the $4.6 million project to perform pavement repairs and preventative maintenance on MLK between Edgewood Boulevard and Victor Avenue, according to MDOT spokesperson Aaron Jenkins.
It didn’t help that a city sewer separation project has rerouted traffic on MLK between Moores River Drive and Victor Avenue.
