This was a real treat. I have been wanting to come to “Baked on the Beach” for a long time but they are always closed and the girl working there said they would close on December 5th so run there now.She recommended one of…the Jersey Cheese and Pork Roll buns which looks like a savory version of the Cinnamon roll but filled with various cheeses and NJ Pork Roll and it did not disappoint as I did not have much breakfast that morning. The pork roll was sliced thin along with a sharp cheese that lined each part of the roll and with every untangling, you could taste the richness of the bun. It was the perfect morning meal. They also had a nice selection of pies and cookies. The service is very friendly and welcoming.More

Chef Catherine Schimenti Opening Baked By The Ocean

Upscale pastry chef Catherine Schimenti left home on Long Island at 17, only to return 20 years later to open her new bakery, Baked by the Ocean, in Long Beach.

Admitting that cooking has always been in my blood, the down-to earth Schimenti, with her signature red-frame glasses and long braids, says she was encouraged by her parents as well as a teacher at Lynbrook High School to make her living in the kitchen.

I always helped my mom do the baking, cooking at home, she recalls. Its always been natural for me to make food for people.

Schimenti, now 38, got an early start in the restaurant business working in a local pizzeria before scoring her first cooking gig as a teen at the now-defunct Porthole restaurant in East Rockaway. She did her culinary training at Johnson & Wales University in Providence before switching in her final year to focus on pastry arts exclusively.

As opposed to traditional cooking, which is more like just turning a raw product into something, says Schimenti, theres a real science to pastry, the blending of ingredients.

Schimentis career took her to some of the finest restaurants, from Balthazar and Gramercy Tavern to Per Se in New York City, before being tapped to oversee pastry at Craft Steak in the Meatpacking District. Her pastry menu was so well received that Schimenti was summoned to Los Angeles to assist with Craft Steaks LA debut.

Scratch Baked Goods Long Beach

…go no further than this little bakery. Great looking cakes… including a yummy vanilla coconut cake… and a bread pudding that looked great that I cant wait to try.

That is the only way to describe Scratch bakery. That space has been many things in the 22 years I have lived in the neighborhood. But the crown of its existence has been as Scratch. They have tasty baked goods all made from….let me see….yes,…Scratch. And they try new things. This morning I had a pastry with roasted pepper and Italian cheeses. It tasted like a breakfast pizza. Tasty and beautiful presentation. They have great cakes. I had a birthday cake made for a friend of mine. It was a salted caramel something or other. And dang it was good. Anyway, if you are in the neighborhood of Fourth St and Termino, check it out. Not open on Mondays, so be aware. Also, they open at 8:00AM.More
