Test quality

When faculty began writing assessments in ExamSoft they were able to move from simply writing an exam to categorizing and creating learning outcome focused test blueprints across the curriculum. Through the test construction process, faculty identified the need for more application and analysis questions to better meet the test goals and course outcomes for higher-level students. The Baker curriculum is a leveled one requiring a higher percentage of analysis questions at each subsequent level. ExamSoft provided the ability to track progress and performance.

With the right mix of questions in place, the Baker team shifted focus to the performance of the overall exam as well as the quality of each itemlooking at the discrimination index, question difficulty, point biserial, and item response patterns as well as other student performance data. The ability to assess the item performance was helpful for faculty in evaluating students performance and provided focused remediation when closing the learning loop in test review.

Through ExamSoft we realized we needed to increase application and analysis level questions. Without ExamSoft, Im not sure we would have realized such specific shortcomings of exams.

The partners have established the Mom Mentoring Program, which is designed to help reduce the infant mortality rate in the county and help nursing students at Baker College fulfill their community credit hours required for graduation.

The partnership we have with Baker Colleges School of Nursing and our Mom Mentoring Program is a fantastic way to fulfill students requirements while serving as a valued community member, said Shelia Wilson, maternal and child health supervisor with PHMC. Helping women throughout their pregnancy journey, and up to the babys first birthday, can be very rewarding.

From 2015 to 2019, the Muskegon County infant mortality rate averaged 7.2%, surpassing the states average of 6.6%, according to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services .

To lower the rate in Muskegon County, the new program is beginning to enroll mentors and mentees.

Mentees are women who are four or more months pregnant and living in Muskegon County and mentors are volunteers, which include Baker College students and Muskegon residents.

Wilson said the 30-minute educational meetings cover numerous pregnancy topics including prenatal care, fetal development month-by-month, emotional fitness, postpartum care, postpartum changes and infant development.
