More than 44 years after Baker founded the company with work partner Hiram Hodges and 17 years after his death, Baker Pest Control stands on those same values.
Starting his own business
Before starting Baker Pest Control, Jim worked for Orkin and Terminix in several Florida communities. Here, he learned the basics of the pest control business.
He and his family returned to St. Augustine for good in 1971, the same year Baker Pest Control was started, first called Baker & Hodges Extermination Company.
Both family men, Hodges and Jim juggled family responsibilities in addition to starting their business.
Jim’s wife Patricia, who now is president of the company, says they started out of the Baker home.
Instead of pushing heavy advertising, Patricia said the company was homegrown.
“It’s good to have your name out there better to have a good reputation,” she said.
With this thinking, the business flourished after its first year, allowing the company and its family staff to get involved with the community it served.
Between volunteering for career day at local schools, supporting community sports, church functions, those in need and other community events, the business stayed involved.
“Not blowing our horn but we’re giving back because I’m born and raised here,” Patricia said.

Don’t hire this company they took advantage of my elderly parents .Their pest-control is not effective . When I called to ask for a solution the technician was very rude and they wanted to charge more money on top of the $125 initial visit then they charged $60 to come back for a second visit only a few weeks later and that still wasn’t effective You’re better off to do it your self pest-control it’s probably more effective and at least you’ll get something for your money. To top it off I found out that my parents had been using this company for years for their termite monitoring system. They won’t be getting any more of our business. I guess this is an example of how they treat their faithful customers , that have been with them for years . I wonder how they would treat a new customer.
