Amy’s Organic Vegetarian Beans

This can of beans had a strong tomato taste, but it wasn’t unpleasant like the can of Heinz baked beans. A majority preferred this can of beans over some of the others because it wasn’t nearly as saucy.

One editor said she liked this can of beans because it wasn’t drowning in sauce, and as a result, she could actually enjoy the natural flavors of the white bean. She also appreciated the tomato purée base more than the traditional brown sugar-filled one. Some other editors who prefer a stronger sweet flavor said this can of beans was average, but enjoyable nonetheless.

“I grew up on Bush’s Original , and the vegetarian one tastes just as good sweeter than others can really taste the brown sugar.”

About Doctoring Canned Baked Beans:

My favorite beans to use for this recipe are Bushs Baked Beans, the original flavor but this still works well with their Original, Brown Sugar, Onion and Homestyle beans. They have about 14 varieties now and I havent tried them all. I wouldnt use any of their Grillin Beans for this recipe.

When I have a little time on my hands and want my canned beans to taste like real home-style cooked for hours from scratch, I transform those canned beans. Into a large saucepan goes bacon and onion to cook until the bacon is rendered and the onion tender, then beans with some sweet brown sugar and deep, earthy molasses. A touch of ketchup adds a rich tomatoey vinegary goodness. Then thats all fortified with the faintest touch of vinegar and lots of mustard powder to give some tang to offset the sweet. Thats mysecret ingredient right there, the mustard powder. If Im really feeling it, I might add a whisper of ground ginger it gives a little zip, but that just depends on my mood.

Then I bake those beans in a casserole, in the oven, slowly, for a good hour, until the top has darkened and almost caramelized, the beans are bubbling and thoroughly hot throughout and the smell is just about driving everyone cray cray. And about the time someone asks, Arent those beans done yet? They are.

Is It Ok To Freeze Your Product

There is no need to freeze unopened cans of beans because the canning process preserves our products. After opening, beans can be frozen in an airtight container for a short period of time. There should not be a significant change in the flavor, but the character of the beans will most likely be altered. After being frozen, the beans tend to be much softer than normal. If you do decide to freeze our products, we do not recommend freezing for an extended period of time or freezing in the can.

Saving Money On Doctoring Canned Baked Beans:

Canned beans really do scream summer and barbecues and cookouts. Watch or them on sale sporadically through the summer and especially before every holiday. The price can get surprising low. Stock up at the low it never hurts to have a can or two on hand to fill out a meal and once you try this recipe, you might be wanting to make them more often.

Bacon is one item I really shop strategically for. Its generally on sale before every holiday, often at half price. Since it doesnt take up much room in the freezer, it makes sense to stock up on bacon, too.

Ive pretty much always baked and always have molasses on hand. It keeps for years, just be sure the cap and lip of the bottle are clean before storing back in the pantry or youll never get it open again. A little molasses, along with white sugar, make brown sugar so its handy to have some molasses in the pantry if you dont regularly use brown sugar. If your brown sugar has hardened, either add a piece of bread to the bag and let sit overnight or place in the microwave, cover with a damp paper towel and microwave in 30-second intervals.

Shortcut this recipe by draining off the excess liquid from the top of the can and baking for 30 minutes.

Variations On Doctoring Canned Baked Beans:

Saucepan: First of all, if Im just looking for a quick weeknight side for burgers or something simple, I just drain off the excess liquid that floats on top of the beans when the can is first opened, then toss the beans in a saucepan and add a squirt of ketchup, a touch of regular old ballpark mustard, a bit of brown sugar and heat them slowly for a few minutes until hot and bubbly and everything has dissolved into a thick sauce. Done. And what a difference that two minutes of effort makes. Boom. Mike drop.

Shortcut: When I want to bake my beans, I gotta tell ya, I think my original recipe/method is the best, but it does take quite a while in the oven. If you want to shortcut that recipe a bit, when you first open up the can, just like I described if youre making beans in the saucepan, drain some of the liquid off. Then proceed with the recipe, below but only bake it for half an hour or so or just until bubbly.

Bacon on Top: When I make my beans, I always chop up the bacon and cook it with the onions another variation is to just lay the bacon over the top of the casserole and bake it at 400 degrees until the beans are bubbly and the bacon is crisped through. Thats never been my fave way because its hard to get the bacon just right but a lot of people love their beans that way and it looks impressive when it comes to the table.

How We Graded Them

Popular Canned Baked Beans, Ranked Worst To First

When you think of a can of beans, what likely comes to mind is a strong presence of brown sugar complemented with a slight taste of pork. You may also imagine soft beans with a relatively equal ratio of sauce-to-bean. Collectively, we weren’t as inclined to rank cans of beans that veered away from traditional flavors or ones that were too dry. We also weren’t a fan of beans that were submerged in a sauce that was too runny, so we stuck to a true taste test and graded these on how much our Eat This, Not That! team liked the taste of these baked beans.

If there are no signs of production slowing, it can be worth buying now to enjoy your investment sooner. But if output is declining and prices are predicted to rise, you might want to wait until the buzz has died down before making a choice.

How To Cook Canned Baked Beans

Thats simple. You can use any oven proof dish you like and mix your canned baked beans right in there. Then bake until they are hot all the way through and bubbling around the edges.

As they cook the baked beans will thicken and get a little sticky crust around the edgesthat makes them look like theyve had ages in the oven doing their thing.

Campbell’s Pork & Beans

Our taste-testers enjoyed the thick texture of these beans. Others said these beans had a smoky, salty taste with a pronounced pork flavor.

Campbell’s may be known for its chicken noodle soup, but it also produces a pretty good can of beans. While Campbell’s Chunky Original Baked Beans were discontinued last year, the next traditional flavor in line is pork & beans. Similar to Trader Joe’s baked beans, Campbell’s beans rank smack dab in the middle for a reasonthe reviews were yet again very mixed. One editor wrote, “Sort of bland not as much flavor as the others.” Another wrote, “Good thick texturenot too sweet or savory.”

B& m Vegetarian Baked Beans

While the texture of the beans was similar to what we would expect from a can of baked beans, the flavor of the aftertaste is what made all of our stomachs churn. The mixture of molasses, sugar, and a blend of savory seasonings did not sit well with any of us.

B& M has been making baked beans since 1867, however, their recipe may be a little stale. In fact, that’s exactly how I described this can of beans it tasted as if it had been marinating in that cylindrical can for over a decade. Another editor described the sauce as watery and said, “it has the strangest aftertaste.” Someone else wrote, “The sauce is really off-putting.”

Overall, the sauce was very runny, and the flavor was not appetizing.

Home Canned Baked Beans (Better Than Bush’s)

The texture of these beans was nearly identical to that of the vegetarian variety. However, the taste was slightly different. One of the editors commented that she tasted a hint of pork.

B& M Original Baked Beans didn’t impress us either. What separates the original from the vegetarian version is pork fat, and while the majority of us were not enthused with this can of beans, it did yield a more positive response among some. One taste tester scribbled, “Extra saucy in comparison to the otherswould be good on a hot dog.”

Still, some other editors weren’t too keen on the molasses and savory seasoning combo that B& M uses. To show how split the reviews were, one editor wrote, “Horrible. Bad aftertaste tastes like the can itself” and another said, “Bland, gross flavor too dry.”

Do I Need To Top Baked Beans With Bacon

The bacon is totally optional. Over the years some readers have expressed a bit of frustration with the fact that the bacon doesnt really crisp up much while cooking and a lot of the rendered fat ends up in the beans. If you want to add bacon, you could cook it about halfway first, then put it on top or stir in chopped cooked bacon before baking to prevent a grease slick on top.

How To Choose The Most Popular Bushs Baked Beans

The three most crucial criteria to consider are price, quality, and popularity.Price is an obvious factor to consider, as you want to ensure it is acceptable for your needs.Quality should also be examined because buying a low-quality goods will not help you achieve your main aim of obtaining the best product. Finally, while not as obvious as price or quality, popularity can be just as significant as both when it comes to attracting new customers.

Can Baked Beans Be Cooked On The Stove

You can heat them just in a pot on the stove, butmehnot as good. You wont get the slow cooked look or flavor the beans take on when they dry out and caramelize a bit in the oven. And you cant add bacon to the top when you cooke them stovetop. I think the flavor is still basically the same though, so if youre pressed for time it will work.

But if you have time, do give them 20 minutes in the oven and it will be worth it.

    Eden Organic Baked Beanssweet Sorghum

Imagine going to an Ethiopian restaurant and delving into a plate of soft savory legumes and vegetables sitting atop a bed of spongy injera bread. This baked bean variety would be the perfect touch to such a plate. However, when it comes to traditional, sweet baked beans, we felt like this one missed the mark. The texture was similar to that of refried beans, more so than baked beans, so if you go into this can wanting a traditional baked bean taste, you won’t find that here.

I personally liked this can of beans the best, as I am not a fan of traditional baked beans. I don’t like the idea of fishing beans out of what looks like syrup. My colleagues, on the other hand, do enjoy a traditional can of baked beans, so they were able to contribute a more honest critique. One editor wrote that the beans, “taste like gingerbread.” Another wrote, “Doesn’t taste like baked beans at all.”

Another editor commented that she tasted a hint of mustard, and mustard seed is the sixth ingredient listed on this can of beans. As for the gingerbread comment, Eden baked beans does include cinnamon and cloves, so that review isn’t entirely far-fetched. All in all, this can of beans ranked last primarily because it didn’t emulate what we collectively envisioned baked beans tasting like.
