Im not making baked beans from scratch and neither are you.

I used ketchup, mustard and brown sugar in these canned baked beansbut you could also add a dab of barbecue sauce if you wanted to and the bacon on the top is totally optional as well. I just think it makes things look and taste like your sneaky side dish never saw the inside of a can.

This is a simple recipe for Texas chili I learned from my mother. I like my chili with a little fire to it, but you can adjust this recipe to your liking. How To Make Bushs Chili Bean Chili
- 1Heat oil in Skillet. Lightly brown meat, push to the side of the pan, add onion, and garlic . Cook until soft.
- 2Drain excess fat if using beef. Mix in the remaining ingredients. Simmer 30-45 minutes.
- 3Very good served over brown rice, white rice,noodles and as for toppings you can add sour cream,grated cheddar cheese,add biscuts or cheese bread sticks. This chili has excellent flavor!

How To Make This Recipe
Start by browning 1lb ground beef with 1 large chopped shallot or 1 small onion, 2 cloves garlic, salt, and pepper in a large soup pot or Dutch Oven.
Next add 28oz can tomato sauce, 15oz can baked beans, and 15oz can black beans that have been drained and rinsed. For whatever reason Ive always used Bushs Vegetarian Baked Beans in my signature chili, but you can use whatever kind you like best. I just love how the baked beans add a touch of sweetness!
Now add all the spices that turn tomato sauce and beans into Signature Spicy, Smoky, Sweet Chili! Youll need 3 Tablespoons chili powder, 1 teaspoon smoked paprika, 1/2 teaspoon each salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and cumin, and 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper.
The smoked paprika gives this chili a totally unique flavor and plays well off the smoky/spicy chili and cayenne powders. Mmm!
Now for the piece de resistance: 1-2 heaping Tablespoons brown sugar. The chili tastes completely different without the brown sugar so if you like a subtle sweetness in your chili then youve just got to go for it! Trust me, it will not make your chili taste like candy. Its all about balance between spicy, smoky, and sweet.
Place a lid on top then simmer for 30 minutes, stirring two or three times.
FYI This chili also freezes PERFECTLY. Let it cool completely then scoop into a freezer bag and freeze flat. To reheat, let it thaw in the refrigerator overnight and then reheat on the stove.

Warmed On The Stove Top
Empty a 16 ounce can of Bushs Original Baked Beans into a saucepan. Add 1 Tablespoon of Heinz Ketchup, 1/2 teaspoon of Frenchs yellow prepared mustard, 3 Tablespoons of dark brown sugar, and 1-1/2 teaspoons of Brer Rabbit mild-flavor molasses.
Stir to combine the ingredients, then heat uncovered over medium-low heat on the stove top for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Be careful not to heat too long, as the beans will thicken too much. These beans now are ready to serve alongside your favorite barbecued meats.
Feel free to add your own signature ingredients to this basic recipe. Crumbled bacon, chopped pork butt or chunks of ham are good choices, or you can make a more complex dish with the addition of yellow onion, various bell peppers, chili pepper, hot sauce, and so on.
How To Cook Canned Baked Beans
Thats simple. You can use any oven proof dish you like and mix your canned baked beans right in there. Then bake until they are hot all the way through and bubbling around the edges.
As they cook the baked beans will thicken and get a little sticky crust around the edgesthat makes them look like theyve had ages in the oven doing their thing.
You can heat them just in a pot on the stove, butmehnot as good. Do give them 20 minutes in the oven and it will be worth it.

Variations On Doctoring Canned Baked Beans:
Saucepan: First of all, if Im just looking for a quick weeknight side for burgers or something simple, I just drain off the excess liquid that floats on top of the beans when the can is first opened, then toss the beans in a saucepan and add a squirt of ketchup, a touch of regular old ballpark mustard, a bit of brown sugar and heat them slowly for a few minutes until hot and bubbly and everything has dissolved into a thick sauce. Done. And what a difference that two minutes of effort makes. Boom. Mike drop.
Shortcut: When I want to bake my beans, I gotta tell ya, I think my original recipe/method is the best, but it does take quite a while in the oven. If you want to shortcut that recipe a bit, when you first open up the can, just like I described if youre making beans in the saucepan, drain some of the liquid off. Then proceed with the recipe, below but only bake it for half an hour or so or just until bubbly.
Bacon on Top: When I make my beans, I always chop up the bacon and cook it with the onions another variation is to just lay the bacon over the top of the casserole and bake it at 400 degrees until the beans are bubbly and the bacon is crisped through. Thats never been my fave way because its hard to get the bacon just right but a lot of people love their beans that way and it looks impressive when it comes to the table.

When I have a little time on my hands and want my canned beans to taste like real home-style cooked for hours from scratch, I transform those canned beans. Into a large saucepan goes bacon and onion to cook until the bacon is rendered and the onion tender, then beans with some sweet brown sugar and deep, earthy molasses. A touch of ketchup adds a rich tomatoey vinegary goodness. Then thats all fortified with the faintest touch of vinegar and lots of mustard powder to give some tang to offset the sweet. Thats mysecret ingredient right there, the mustard powder. If Im really feeling it, I might add a whisper of ground ginger it gives a little zip, but that just depends on my mood.
Then I bake those beans in a casserole, in the oven, slowly, for a good hour, until the top has darkened and almost caramelized, the beans are bubbling and thoroughly hot throughout and the smell is just about driving everyone cray cray. And about the time someone asks, Arent those beans done yet? They are.
