HONEYBAKED Ham store manager Lance Wheeler says he’s a popular guy at holiday dinners.
While the rest of the guests brings salads and desserts, Wheeler arrives with the pig.
His store may have dispatched 10,000 hams during the Christmas season freezers full of glazed hams have filled and emptied several times.

“That’s OK,” he said, grinning. “I bring it, but sometimes I eat the roast beef.”
Wheeler is happy to oblige both customers and friends. He knows he gets a breather when the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays are over.
Now that it’s mid-January, business is starting to refocus on Easter. Sales are so brisk for the smoked, honey-glazed, spiral cut hams that Wheeler expects to see a lot of competition in the next few weeks, months and years.
“It’s the same all over the country,” he said. “We open, then we see mom-and-pop stores open, and then a shakeout starts. They don’t have the quality of ham or customer service they need to survive.”
In an odd twist of timing, this time it’s HoneyBaked Hams that is the newcomer to Oklahoma City’s specialty meat business. Wheeler opened his Oklahoma City store a decade ago.
A competitor, Cusak Meats, opened in 1933. Schwab Meat Co. has been around since 1912.
That’s not to say HoneyBaked Ham is a fledgling company. The Michigan-based chain has grown to 350 stores in 38 states. Some stores are new and some are acquired.
