Portos Bake At Home Unboxing and Review

Under normal circumstances, the cafe is crowded with boisterous food lovers jostling to find a seat or line up to place an order. The system to order inside the cafe is a bit complicated. The first step is to decide what you want because the line can move rather quickly and you want to be prepared to place your order as soon as you get to the counter so that you dont hold up the people behind you. If you have ordered drinks, you will need to pick them up from a separate counter. You will be notified of when to pick up your food order using a vibrating coaster. Finally, if you have a bakery order, you will need to find the counter specifically for large bakery orders such as platters and cakes.

Given the current situation with social distancing, however, the system has changed. While some locations may offer limited outdoor seating the most efficient way to get your Portos foodie fix is to order online and go through In-Car Pick Up.

“I think this was a great recipe,” says Kate Cedeno. “I would definitely suggest covering it with foil and letting it sit in the refrigerator for several hours before serving.”

“This recipe made an amazing cake,” according to Namira Anjum. “I cut it in half and it worked perfectly for a 9-inch round. The great thing is you can do it all in the pan you bake it in, so you don’t have to worry about parchment paper.”

Every time I walk into a location of L.A.’s beloved Porto’s Bakery, the huge line makes me smile. Porto’s is, in fact, the only place I’m happy to wait in line, because there’s no restaurant like it. It’s one of those magical places where you can easily put together a $4 breakfast or a $6 lunch and treat yourself to an extravagant but affordable dessert.

Portos Bakery Cheese Roll History

The Portos Bakery Cheese Roll is a popular treat in Los Angeles, but its actually an adaptation of a Mexican pastry called a rosca de reyes.

The original recipe for the cheese roll was developed by a baker named Carlos Porto in Mexico City. He made it as part of a traditional celebration for Three Kings Day, or Epiphany, which is celebrated on January 6. The pastry is made from flaky puff pastry and filled with a cream cheese mixture.

Porto immigrated to Los Angeles in the late 1960s. He opened his first bakery, Portos Bakery, in 1972 and began selling the cheese rolls there soon afterward. They were an immediate hit with customers and remain so today.

ARE PORTOS BAKE AT HOME PASTRIES WORTH IT??

Portos chicken empanadas is my second Portos bake at home review! With a 2 box minimum, I decided to add potato balls and their cheese and spicy pepper balls to my order as well, but this post will focus on the portos chicken empanadas review.

What Are Portos Bake at Home Chicken Empanadas?

Frozen chicken empanadas that you can bake at home! The item comes frozen and its to remain frozen until baking time. These come by the dozen, and a dozen is $16.99, which isnt bad for empanadas considering just a few at a restaurant is over $10.

Baking Instructions

Baking instructions can be found here as well. Pretty simple preheat oven to 400 F, and place frozen empanadas withe enough space apart on top of parchment paper on top of a baking sheet, and bake until golden brown. They say 30 35 mins, and 25 30 mins in a convection oven. My oven is still a bit messed up so it took 40 mins or so. Ah well.

Empanada Frozen Quality

Some look pretty good, and others are looking not so great. There are some with frozen filling spilling out, and others with cracked pastry.

Portos Bake At Home Experience Strudels And Cake

Milk and berries cake

Im really missing some Portos right now I used to frequent the Glendale location for their various strudels, notably their cheese ones. I also remember trying their various cake slices/mini cakes. Pretty good! Portos Bake at Home started a while back where people can order frozen unbaked products and bake them at home. Pretty cool! The Milk Bar strawberry cake wasnt my first cake to arrive frozen, as Portos bake at home MilkN Berries cake was the first.

If You Can’t Go Out Porto’s Bakery Offers Bake At Home

While many people are out and about again, others of us such as myself are still focused on staying at home as much as possible. It’s tough though since frankly, I’m getting tired of the things I know how to make and sometimes you want a restaurant-quality experience that is just easy. Delivery often fails in this regard since that crispy, fresh from the oven experience just doesn’t work after sitting in a delivery bag for 20-30 minutes. That’s why I love these treats that Porto’s Baker from Los Angeles sent us to try out as part of their Porto’s Bake At Home experience.

Many of you won’t be familiar with Porto’s Bakery but most of my friends in Los Angeles know it extremely well. Founded in 1976, Rosa Porto – a Cuban Immigrant – opened a bakery selling cakes and since then has expanded to include a variety of other Cuban foods. Now they’ve expanded and are offering an absolutely fantastic “bake at home” experience where not only is the food absolutely fantastic, it is well packaged, and the directions on how to make it are also well written and easy to follow.

Items available for Porto’s Bake At Home include: Cheese Roll, Potato Ball, Chocolate Twist, Refugiado – Guava & Cheese Pastry, Chicken Empanada, Arroz Con Pollo Frito, Pastel De Carne , Cheese & Spicy Pepper Potato Ball, Pastel De Guayaba , and of course – their cookies including Chocolate Chip and Snickerdoodle.

My clear favorite here was the Arroz Con Pollo with the Chicken Empanadas a close second.

Information

What To Eat

If you are looking for something yummy to eat, you really cant go wrong at Portos Cafe and Bakery. With a variety of foods all bursting with flavor, Portos is perfect for just about everyone’s palate but they are particularly fitting for group orders. Their splendid cakes are delectable and sizable enough for a family birthday. Their pastries are available by the dozen so you can feed a group or gorge yourself on heavenly treats for days on end.

Meals

The Portos menu options for individual meals include soups, salads, and plates filled with rice, beans, maduros, and your choice of meat. The most popular choice, however, is probably their sandwiches. The Cubano and Medianoche sandwiches are both great picks.

If you are in the mood for breakfast, a personal favorite is the Cuban Style French Toast called Torrejas. Its served with rich amounts of butter, comes with tropical fruit and guava syrup on the side, and a fantastic whipped cream. I have no idea how many calories the Torrejas has, but every one of them is worth it. Also, the Guacamole and Cheese Omelette Sandwich is amazing but sadly their limited menu means it isnt currently available. If you see it come back, let us know. We miss it.

Drinks

Portos offers a variety of bottled drinks, including their signature fresh squeezed orange juice. But for those who like exploring interesting new flavors, Portos also sells Guava Lemonade and Jamaica Strawberry Lemonade.
