Entrepreneurs may be all smiles when they get an offer on the show, but the deals arent set in stone. Negotiations start soon after episodes are taped. Contestants can walk away if they want.

When we shake hands on a potential deal on Shark Tank, the romance runs high and everyones excited about what could be, Corcoran says. In the end, the entrepreneur is in charge.

During the first five seasons, 374 contestants appeared on TV and investors made 190 offers, according to ABC. Forty-eight contestants turned down offers during taping, executive producer Clay Newbill says. They havent tracked how many deals fell apart during negotiations.

The producers ask entrepreneurs and investors to make their best efforts to close deals, Newbill says.

But we understand, just as in the real world, the reality is that not all deals will close, he says.

Corcoran offered $75,000 for 40 percent of The Smart Baker and a 5 percent sales royalty during the 2011 taping. During negotiations the Rensings disagreed with Corcoran about the target market.

We were sticking to our guns on the market we served, Rensing says.

Corcoran says she was disappointed but knows a rejection is an occupational hazard on Shark Tank.

Nobody likes to be turned down, especially me, she says.

There is always the what-ifs, but we dont let that get to us, Daniel Rensing says.

The Smart Baker Before Shark Tank

Daniel Rensing became an overnight entrepreneur when he decided to make his wifes life just a little bit easier. Stephanie Rensing loves being in the kitchen and the majority of her time is spent baking all kinds of pastries, cakes, and other sweet treats. As most people who love to bake know, things can become a little difficult when you try to make more or less than an original recipe calls for. In attempt to remedy this issue, Daniel created an apron that has a conversion chart on the bottom of it. This way his wife wouldnt have to stop every few minutes to look up the conversions on the phone or computer.

His wife was thrilled with the new invention and insisted that they put it out on the market. That was when the Smart Baker line came into creation. Their new apron received a lot of recognition and brought in enough sales that Daniel and Stephanie were capable of adding other new products to their line. Smart Baker introduced a line of high quality cupcake towers in addition parchment paper that was designed to fit perfectly into baking equipment. On their website they also feature an array of various other baking accessories, but it wasnt until Stephanie lost her job as a teacher that the couple decided to invest all of their time into the business.

Since the beginning of mass-market advertising, it’s been pretty well established that a good jingle helps to sell your product and get people to remember it. Steve Gadlin knew that well and decided to put it to use in Episode 2 of Season 3 when he came onto “Shark Tank” with his pitch for his quirky art-on-demand business I Want To Draw A Cat For You. Gadlin not only sang a song but even did a delightfully goofy little dance to help win the sharks and the viewing audience over to his concept.

They all loved the performance, but Mark was so charmed by Gadlin that he actually invested in the unusual business. It had its ups and downs, with Gadlin retiring for a time but since returning and adding dogs to the available list of animals he’ll draw for you. No matter what ended up happening with the business itself, the pitch remains one of the most entertaining in the show’s history and one of the oddest business ideas ever to get one of the sharks to invest money in.

In one of the most unique types of businesses ever to appear on “Shark Tank.” Ten Thirty One Productions was so named because it offered Halloween and otherwise spooky-themed live attractions. The pitch was definitely a sight to behold, as it should’ve been for a company looking to prove itself as a live performance-based business. Everyone was impressed, including Mark Cuban, who eventually offered the company a whopping $2 million and for only 20% of the company, no less. Daniel Rensing, who grew up in Levittown, N.Y., created a clever product that attracted press attention within 10 days of its launch.

When the Rensings relocated to Rockledge, Fla. in 2003, Daniel began a degree in computer graphic and design at Keiser University, in Melbourne, Fla.

He purchased a small vinyl plotter to make small decals for classmates, the biggest sellers being car stickers based on customers tattoos.

Rensing expanded his business to provide large format digital printing for local and national businesses. Eleven years later, he still runs DG Design and Print.

In mid-2009, Rensing designed for his wife Stephanie, who is an accomplished baker, the Cheat Sheet Apron. It had cooking guides measures and conversions printed upside-down on the apron for the cook to read easily. Friends clamored for one Rensing decided to list the apron on Etsy.

Within 10 days, the editor of the Food Network Magazine, who had seen the apron on Etsy, called Rensing.

After appearing on the show, the deal with Barbara fell through as a result of not being able to come to an agreement on making a less expensive version of the cupcake tower. Even though no deal was made, Daniel continued to work towards the growth of Smart Baker. In addition to that, Stephanie received a call a week after the show finished taping to find out that she got a new teaching job.

As far as the Smart Baker success goes, Daniel managed ship six tons of product to an Amazon distributor. In addition to that, he started working on making a licensing deal for their parchment paper with Reynolds Wrap. The most of their sales are made during holidays like Christmas and Mothers day, but they still revamped their website which definitely helped to increase their popularity. Occasionally, “Shark Tank” will have a themed episode where all of the pitches and entrepreneurs share a common thread. Episode 20 of Season 5 was one such example of this, featuring a collection of children and teenagers all hoping to become young entrepreneurs with their clever business ideas. And finally, spiced honey business Henry’s Humdingers got both Mark and Robert to partner with the company’s 16-year-old founder.
