Nic Levesque One Of Two Students Selected By Travelcenters Of America Has Trained At Ta’s Ohio National Facility For The Contest
Nic Levesque, of Grosse Ile and a student at Baker Colleges Auto/Diesel Institute of Michigan, is one of 80 individuals who will compete in the American Trucking Associations TMCFutureTech national student technician competition, Friday, Sept. 18, in Orlando, Florida.
Levesque was selected by his employer, TravelCenters of America, based on his in-shop performance. He works as a diesel technician at a TA Stopping Center in Monroe. TravelCenters, which employs nearly 3,000 technicians across the U.S., selected two of its student technicians to enter the annual competition. As a student, Levesque will represent the ADI at the competition.
Robert Ellsworth, ADI program director of diesel technologies, said, Nic always adds to each class with his curiosity and upbeat, positive attitude. This combined with his drive for success and the high quality of training provided at the ADI, and Nic is off to a successful career start in his life’s passion. Were cheering him on.

OWOSSO, MI — A new facility at Baker College of Owosso aims to boost the regions workforce training in the area of automotive and diesel service jobs.
The $6.5 million,43,000 square-foot Auto/Diesel Institute of Michigan opened with a ribbon cutting last week and will serve about 450 students in the fall semester.
The opening of the new Auto/Diesel Institute facility establishes Baker College of Owosso as a national-level provider of high-quality service technicians in both the auto and diesel areas, said Peter W. Karsten, Baker College of Owosso president in a news release. The additional capacity provided in this high-tech facility will allow us to attract students from geographical areas across the United States. Baker College of Owosso is pleased to continue to invest in Shiawassee County and the mid-Michigan area to educate and train the workforce for tomorrow.”
The new facility includes two automotive labs, three diesel labs, four engine and transmission labs and three lecture classrooms, according to Baker.
Programs offered there will include automotive service and diesel service certificate and associate degrees and anew automotive diesel service management bachelors degree program.
Alternative energy and collision repair are potential programs that could be housed there in the future, according to Baker.

Levesque has been practicing for the national contest in addition to completing his final term in the diesel service technology associate program at the ADI and working full time.

Baker College Gets Truck For Mechanic Training From Granger
LANSING, Mich. A used garbage truck is getting new life at a local college.
Granger Waste Services just donated a Labre garbage truck to Baker Colleges Auto Diesel Institute of Michigan.
Students in the school’s Auto Diesel Institute of Michigan in Owosso will use the truck to get real-world diesel mechanic training.
The truck was part of a fleet of vehicles Granger bought when the company acquired local waste hauler, Good Earth.
Mechanics in training will learn how to fix waste industry vehicles.
The college has several kinds of diesel vehicles as part of its shop, but until last week had no garbage trucks.

What You Need To Work As A Diesel Mechanic In Michigan
To be a diesel mechanic in Michigan you must be certified through the state. There are two pathways you can take to become certified:
- Complete high school or earn your GED, go to a post-secondary school to earn a degree or certificate in diesel mechanics and take the states test for certification.
- Complete high school or earn your GED, get a trainee license from the state and spend two years training with a certified mechanic. Then, you can take the state test for certification. The trainee license lasts for only two years and cannot be renewed.
Certification and testing are conducted through the Michigan Department of State. The Secretary of State website offers online registration for testing. To be a diesel mechanic, you will take the test for diesel engine repair.

Future potential programs include alternative energy and collision repair.
The project’s contractors included TMP Architecture, Inc., Bloomfield Hills Morgan Construction Company, Flint, construction management and several local subcontractors.
