Although his father was a used car wholesaler and at least two of his uncles were automotive salesmen, Bob Baker had no intention of getting into the car business.
A devout Catholic who attended religious schools as a child, Baker wanted to be a priest.

He also would anguish over a fatal crash involving one of his vehicles that killed a family and led to a worldwide recall.
Baker, 89, died at his Rancho Santa Fe home on Sunday. His son, Chris, the youngest of five Baker children, said the cause was a mixture of dementia, lymphoma and renal failure.
Bob was not complicated, said his friend and former business partner Dave Ezratty, who now lives in Idaho. He taught you the simple things: Watch the pennies and nickels and that will get you the dollars. Bob didnt hand out anything he gave people opportunity. If they listened to him, they would be successful. He wanted everybody to succeed, even his competitors.
When he was 10, Bakers parents divorced and he spent the rest of his childhood in foster homes, boarding houses and on the streets, Chris Baker said.

Greg Miller is embarking on his own dealership journey.
Independent of the Larry H. Miller Group of Companies , Greg Miller announced the acquisition of his first dealership on Wednesday with the purchase of Bob Baker Toyota in San Diego. This dealership will be renamed Greg Miller Toyota and will be operated under his new enterprise, Greg Miller Automotive San Diego.
It has been a dream of mine for nearly 30 years to have my own dealership, Greg Miller said. When an associate at Toyota approached and encouraged me to pursue this opportunity, I realized this was a way to fulfill my dream and to continue to be a part of the community I love here in Utah.
Miller will continue to be actively involved on the LHM Group board of directors and in serving as the Utah Jazz representative on the NBA Board of Governors. He will maintain his Salt Lake City residence and will continue to also serve in several religious and civic capacities, including on the board of the Utah Office of Tourism.
Miller has more than 30-years of experience in the automotive industry. He began his career by working as a lot attendant at his parents first store, Toyota of Murray. Over the years, he has held a variety of management roles within dealerships and the LHM Group.
Greg Miller elaborated more about what prompted this decision.
Miller considers employees the foundation for a great customer experience, and with this acquisition, current employees will transition with the store.

When local auto dealer and RSF resident Bob Baker heard that the Lemon Grove Little League was in dire financial straits he didnt hesitate to come to the rescue.
As the league stormed into and almost won last years Senior League World Series they found that they had to empty their cash register to cover the costs. They approached the city council but a decision was postponed until a later date.
With the season approaching, the outlook didnt look good. Bob Baker heard about it and not only did he replenish the $4,000 that was spent for the series run, he added seed money to get next season started.
On behalf of the Bob Baker Family Foundation and Bob Baker Toyota Scion Lemon Grove, it gives me great pleasure to help out an organization that is so dedicated to the kids of Lemon Grove, said Baker as he presented the check to Steve Gulley, president of the Lemon Grove Little League. Gulley expressed great appreciation on behalf of the parents and players. Gully said that hes not sure where theyd be without Bob Bakers generosity.

The former CEO of Larry H. Miller Group of Cos., Greg Miller, has purchased his own dealership, the former Bob Baker Toyota in Lemon Grove, Calif., outside San Diego.
Under the deal, which closed Tuesday and was announced today, the dealership will be renamed Greg Miller Toyota. It will be operated as part of Millers new enterprise: Greg Miller Automotive San Diego.
Its significant that the first dealership Ive purchased is a Toyota store, as that was the first dealership my parents purchased nearly 40 years ago, Greg Miller said through a spokeswoman in an email to Automotive News.
Millers company is independent of Larry H. Miller Dealerships, the Sandy, Utah, company which is part of Larry H. Miller Group of Cos.
Greg Millers father and mother, Larry Miller and Gail Miller, founded that group, which grew to include dealerships, real-estate investments and the Utah Jazz professional basketball team.
While Greg Miller, 49, will be leading his dealership in San Diego, he will still be actively involved on the Larry H. Miller Group board.
Dream come true
For nearly three decades, Miller said, it has been his dream to own a dealership.
When an associate at Toyota approached and encouraged me to pursue this opportunity, I realized this was a way to fulfill my dream and to continue to be a part of the community I love here in Utah, Miller said in a media statement.
