Trader Joe’s Baked Beans

Bourbon BBQ Slow Cooker Baked Beans (Low salt!)

The majority of us agreed that this can of beans was a bit too sweet, but the texture was spot-on.

Another editor and I both ranked this can of beans high on our list of favorites. However, the rest of our team shared a different opinion. After sampling a small portion of Trader Joe’s Organic Baked Beans, one editor commented “way too sweet, I want to pour salt into it.” However, keep in mind, everyone’s taste buds are different, so to make matters even more confusing, another editor didn’t think it was sweet enough.

“Less sweet than what I’m used to could be good as a side for a savory dish,” she wrote. Do you see how we have such mixed reviews? That’s why this one sits almost in the middle of our list.

Heinz Original Baked Beans

The best way to describe this can is navy beans floating in an abyss of Heinz ketchup.

I personally was not a fan of this can of beans at all. The sauce was very runny and very prominent in tomato flavor. One editor bluntly wrote, “Tastes like it’s drowning in ketchup.” On the other end of the spectrum, one editor ranked this can of beans as her top choice, writing, “Sweet ketchup flavor delicious! I would put it on all of my burgers.”

Beans on burgers? To each their own, I guess.

Use Pork Belly For Lowest Sodium Baked Beans

Even using low sodium bacon will add 70+ mg of sodium per serving to this recipe. So one of the biggest keys to making this recipe low sodium targets the bacon. And to do that you need uncured pork belly. Pork belly is really just bacon that has not gone through a curing process , is un-smoked and may be unsliced.

If you can purchase pre-sliced pork belly, that will be the easiest, or you could ask the butcher to slice up a slab of pork belly. Either way you get it though, you will most likely have to cut the skin or rind off. This is easily cut off with a sharp knife or some kitchen shears. The pork belly is also easier to cut and slice if it is firmed up in the freezer.

Why Is Natural Flavor Important

Why does this matter for vegans? In essence, if you dont know where something came from, you cant verify if its really vegan. Take sugar for an example.

Sugar ought to be a vegan ingredient, right? While sugar itself is not an animal product, some companies make sugar using animal products. Specifically, companies may occasionally use bone char made from charred cattle bones to filter sugar grains.

Because of this, sugar made using the bone char process is not vegan. It still uses an animal product in its manufacturing.

Therefore, some vegans dont consider Bushs Baked Beans to be vegan. The company hasnt revealed what goes into the natural flavors themselves.

You can personally decide either way. As noted above, there are no raw animal ingredients in Bushs Vegetarian Baked Beans. But youre technically just guessing that Bushs Baked Beans arent made with animal products if you consume them.

Amys Organic Vegetarian Baked Beans

Bush

An organic treat from start to finish, Amys Organic Vegetarian Baked Beans are made with delicious and nutritional ingredients including organic tomato purée, organic cane sugar, organic garlic, and more. Fortunately, even potentially problematic ingredients like cane sugar are processed using vegan-friendly methods, avoiding the use of bone char.

These baked beans come with 31 g of carbohydrates, 9 g of fiber, and 600 mg of potassium. If you need some more iron in your diet, these beans can be a great choice each serving contains 3.5 mg of this vital mineral.

What Does It Mean That Bushs Baked Beans Arent Vegan

Furthermore, Bushs Baked Beans are not vegan certified. But this may not matter to you depending on your preferences.

Vegan certified just means that a food product has seen the seal of approval from one or many official vegan organizations. For example, the Certified Vegan stamp is issued by Vegan.org. Vegan.org is an international company that investigates food manufacturers to see whether their products are truly vegan friendly or not.

Theres also the Vegan Trademark. This is issued by The Vegan Society, and it has a very rigorous application process. Companies have to apply for the stamp of approval from The Vegan Society. The entire process takes four steps and licenses only last for up to 24 months at maximum.

At this time, none of Bushs Baked Beans ever seen any vegan organizations seal of approval. But that doesnt mean at these beans are necessarily non-vegan. Again, it largely depends on what counts as vegan in your eyes.

Cooking Beans In Instant Pot = Time Savings

If you dont have an Instant Pot, I highly recommend getting one. I wasnt that big on having different kitchen appliances when I wasnt cooking fresh food all the time. But with a low sodium meal life style change, I didnt necessarily want to be in the kitchen all the time either. Well, the Instant Pot helped me save time along with being easy to use. I use at least once or twice a week. It truly is a good investment with all that you can do with it for a busy person who wants to cook home cooked meals.

Everyday Value Organic Baked Beans

The beans were soft, and the flavor wasn’t overly sweet.

365 Everyday Value Organic Baked Beans was one of our favorites, likely because they weren’t too sweet or too savorythey were just right in the middle. One editor described it perfectly: “Sweet and tangy the texture was overall good. I would choose this.”

Bush

The clear winner. As one editor wrote, “These are classic for a reason! I love the pork bits and the sweet sauce.”

Each can comes with iron from real food sources rather than fortified ingredients, and youll get 8 g of protein per serving more than the protein offered by most other types of baked beans.

B& m Original Baked Beans

The texture of these beans was nearly identical to that of the vegetarian variety. However, the taste was slightly different. One of the editors commented that she tasted a hint of pork.

B& M Original Baked Beans didn’t impress us either. What separates the original from the vegetarian version is pork fat, and while the majority of us were not enthused with this can of beans, it did yield a more positive response among some. One taste tester scribbled, “Extra saucy in comparison to the otherswould be good on a hot dog.”

Still, some other editors weren’t too keen on the molasses and savory seasoning combo that B& M uses. To show how split the reviews were, one editor wrote, “Horrible. Bad aftertaste tastes like the can itself” and another said, “Bland, gross flavor too dry.”

Eden Organic Baked Beanssweet Sorghum

Imagine going to an Ethiopian restaurant and delving into a plate of soft savory legumes and vegetables sitting atop a bed of spongy injera bread. This baked bean variety would be the perfect touch to such a plate. However, when it comes to traditional, sweet baked beans, we felt like this one missed the mark. The texture was similar to that of refried beans, more so than baked beans, so if you go into this can wanting a traditional baked bean taste, you won’t find that here.

I personally liked this can of beans the best, as I am not a fan of traditional baked beans. I don’t like the idea of fishing beans out of what looks like syrup. My colleagues, on the other hand, do enjoy a traditional can of baked beans, so they were able to contribute a more honest critique. One editor wrote that the beans, “taste like gingerbread.” Another wrote, “Doesn’t taste like baked beans at all.”

Another editor commented that she tasted a hint of mustard, and mustard seed is the sixth ingredient listed on this can of beans. As for the gingerbread comment, Eden baked beans does include cinnamon and cloves, so that review isn’t entirely far-fetched. All in all, this can of beans ranked last primarily because it didn’t emulate what we collectively envisioned baked beans tasting like.

Low Sodium Baked Beans Instant Pot

With these Low Sodium Baked Beans you can bring baked beans back to the table for a cookout or weeknight meal. These beans are cooked in the Instant Pot and can all be ready in a little over an hour. Using a Instant Pot, no pre-soaking of the beans is required or hours long simmering all day. And with just a few minutes prep and about an hour cook time, youll have cooked dried beans that are ready to eat. Plus youll have the most tender, flavorful baked beans you ever had with a huge sodium savings.

Typical sodium amount per serving = 1/2 cup 410 570+ mg
Sodium per serving for this recipe = 1/2 cup 28 mg
Calories per serving 223

I have been finding more and more canned bean varieties with no salt added available in the store lately. But unfortunately not for baked beans. There is a reduced sodium version that has 410 mg per ½ cup, but that is still too much for our particular diet. And with a regular can at about 570 mg, per ½ cup does not really seem like much of savings.

That is unfortunate as this recipe proves you can have baked beans at a fraction of the sodium level of canned beans. My low sodium baked bean recipe checks in at just 28 mg of sodium per half cup. With sodium this low you probably can allow yourself to have another serving of easy to make delicious baked beans.
