Bake Off Star On Life Changing Diagnosis And Cake Woes

Here’s What The Cameras Hide On Great British Bake Off

“It didn’t make me feel like an alien anymore”

Liverpool’s Bake Off star Lizzie Acker wowed the public with her final showstopper celebrating neurodiversity before she became the eighth person sent home from the Channel Four show this year.

“Keen dog mum” Lizzie, 28, went out with a bang after staying true to herself with wild cakes that sometimes puzzled viewers and judges.

The confidence and creativity of Hunts Cross car factory worker Lizzie comes after a lifetime of being dismissed as “stupid” and “lazy”, she says. Now she hopes others can be more accepting of themselves.

Even on set, Lizzie sometimes struggled. But the understanding of the crew helped her through.

Lizzie told the ECHO : “I struggled a lot when everyone was getting judged, when you’ve got to sit there and you’ve just been through this big thing where you’ve spent so much energy.

“I’d be sat there and you’d be listening to people’s conversations, and all these random thoughts used to start going through my head, and I’d just be sat there like, ‘Aw, this is just too much’.”

The production team was fantastic in their support for Lizzie, she said.

They made adjustments to help her compete on a level playing field, like helping her with reading if she needed it during technical challenges.

Lizzie told the ECHO : “I think they realised after episode two that I was finding it difficult to sit there during challenges when we were getting judged.

Getting her diagnoses made a “massive difference” to Lizzie.

Acker’s Next Baking Plans

Do you have a favorite memory from being on the show that really stood out?

Standing back, I’d finished piping my last cake, and standing back, and feeling proud of myself and then looking at Giuseppe. Giuseppe was nearly crying. Chigs was offering to give me a hug, and Crystelle was stood there nearly crying. I was thinking, “Oh wow, I’ve done something good.” You know when something sinks in, that was it. It was the best moment.

Thinking back on it too, if you could go back and do anything different, would you?

No, definitely not because I think it was the best experience. I’m happy I went out that week. The people that were there were amazing. It was like some weird dream, because I still work in a car factory, I’m still in the car factory, and I think, six months ago, I was in the “Bake Off” tent. I’m now writing recipes for Nielsen-Massey. What’s going on with my life?

What are your future baking plans looking like?

Right now, I don’t know. I’m talking to people about a book and working on a recipe for Nielsen-Massey for Easter as well, which is exciting. It’s nice to be able to work for a brand that I use because sometimes, you’re thinking, “What is going to happen?” Then, for a brand that I use and I love to reach out to me, I was like, “Good on me.” That was so exciting. Then, talking about a book and then there’s been bits on podcasts, and TV shows, and stuff. It’s like a crazy rollercoaster ride.

How They First Connected

So, Freya rocked up to the bubble in a colourful coat which I loved, Lizzie explained on Instagram. She was the first baker I met and it felt like we had known each other for years.

Instantly, I was awe of this girl – when I was 19 I just wanted to get drunk.

However, Freya put herself out there to be judged by the whole nation. Not only that, but she made things ten times harder for herself by making her bakes vegan – and represent the things she believes in.

One Of Bake Off’s Toughest Obstacles

Thinking back on the whole experience, what was the biggest lesson that you learned from it, if you had to take anything away?

I think the biggest lesson of it was to always be yourself and not to ever listen to other people because when we … We shot “Bake Off” and then it comes out, so it’s a pure experience. Then once it is , you’re opened up to Twitter and everything. We knew what was coming. I remember one week, someone saying, “Oh, can Lizzie even read or write?” Like don’t even know the fishes as plural. I was like, “Well, wait for three weeks and you’ll see stupid,” because all this stuff comes at you from nowhere. You’re thinking, “These people don’t really know me, or know I’m dyslexic, I struggle with all this.” They’re just saying this stuff and it could affect you, like that label.

How did you get through that? How did you cope with it?

I’ve got an amazing group of 11 friends we’re all going through the same It’s the best support system.

Lizzie, 28, and her partner live with their dog, Prudence, in an annex in her parents garden.

A baker who prefers simple presentation and believes in flavour and quantity over precision, Lizzie may look like shes frantic and messy on the outside, but she is usually calm and collected within.

Her baking comfort zone is cake, but she loves experimenting with flavour and is generally prepared to give anything a go as long as it doesnt involve putting cheese in bread, which she thinks can only spell disaster.

When shes not baking, Lizzie can be found on the dance floor, doing the samba in a suitably jazzy costume.

Or investigating the lives of serial killers, a fascination she developed during her study for her criminology degree.

Great British Bake Off will be back on Tuesday, September 21 at 8pm on Channel 4.

Is There Anything To These Sandro And Rebs Dating Rumors

It looks as if Sandro might have recently gone on holiday with a fellow GBBO cast member. He and Rebs, who didn’t have a great start in the tent, shared photos of each other on social media with what looked to be a very beachy background, per The Sun. PostBake Off friendships pop up all the time. We could never forget Lizzie and Freya from last season. There is no point in reading into every vacation selfie.

Of course this season is not without a bit of light scandal already. Metro reported that Sandro might not be an amateur baker after all. The GBBO rules clearly state that all contestants must not be professional bakers, but an astute Twitter user asked, “Is Sandro not the guy that Maya Jama bought a cake from for Stormzys birthday? Previously known as Sandros Cakery?”

Lizzies Funniest And Most Memorable Moments So Far

The Liverpudlian has left the GBBO presenters and audience in stitches since day one of the show with her stories and quick wit.

Lizzie, who lives with her partner and their dog, Prudence, in an annex in her parents garden, started the series with a surreal story relayed to presenter Noel Fielding about an unhinged ostrich riding off with her as a child.

The tale seemed so incredible, she later took to social media to post photographic evidence of the ostrich fiasco.

Lizzie also admitted to the other GBBO presenter Matt Lucas that she was watching Harry Potter instead of practising baking.

Other gems from Lizzie include: Stick to what you know when you dont know nothing.

And sharing that her deceased pet pig Susie was the inspiration behind her Pig Banquet Milk Bread Display showstopper.

In last weeks show, Lizzie presented Birkenhead-born judge Paul Hollywood with a miniature purple bin emblazoned with the slogan Im wheelie born in Liverpool.

The iconic purple bins are only issued to residents living within in Liverpool city council boundaries and if you have one, youre deemed a real Scouser.

Other areas such as Sefton, Knowsley and Wirral – where Hollywood is from – do not have them.

What Has Lizzie Said About Appearing On The Show

Whilst some of the bakers on the show believe precision is the key to making the perfect bake, Lizzie disagrees as she believes that the focus should be more on the flavour.

She likes to pride herself on her ability to stay calm in stressful situations and is happy to take on any challenge as long as it isn’t one that involves putting cheese in bread.

Of course now that she’s mentioned it, it will be no surprise if a cheesy bread challenge pops up.

She feels that she used the time in lockdown wisley to expertise skills, as she explained: “It gave me so much time to try recipes that I had never done before.”

However, saying this, her biggest weakness is that she is unable to make things neat or small, and given that challenges often require making a batch, they will need to look identical.

With all those memories of Amys best bake, Lizzie wanted to put her own spin on the recipe but instead of chocolate, Lizzie wanted to focus on vanilla, one of her favorite flavors.

As Lizzie explains, Vanilla is best friend to all flavors. Its a supporting actor. Itll support lemon. Itll support chocolate, coffee In this case, it supports white chocolate and browned butter.

Where Is Lizzie Acker Now

Since Lizzie Acker has dyslexia and is on the ADHD spectrum, she never imagined that a book would be something shed ever be involved with, but that recently changed with the publication of The Great British Bake Off: A Bake for All Seasons. On Instagram, the 28-year-old talked about this candidly, writing, For anyone to see themselves in a book is surreal, but for me, it feels super odd. I am severely dyslexic and on the ADHD spectrum. I dont read books, so having recipes I came up with in a book is mind blowing, adding that all these aspects should be celebrated.

From what we can tell, Lizzies life experiences have only progressed since her appearance on The Great British Bake Off. Not only is she continuing to pursue her passion in this creative industry in every way possible with the help of new opportunities, but she has also found some great new friends through the series. She and Freya Cox have even joked about having their own show together. The Scouser has admitted that she was worried about meeting her fellow bakers at one point, but it looks like that panic was entirely needless. And today, we only wish Lizzie the best for all her future endeavors.
