Lawyer Deserves Reprimand For Courtroom Protest That Led To ‘bart Simpson

An Ohio lawyer has agreed to a public reprimand for his reaction to a judges adverse ruling that led to a well-publicized and unusual punishment.
The Ohio Supreme Courts Board of Professional Conduct is recommending that the state supreme court agree to the public reprimand for Lorain, Ohio, lawyer Anthony Baker, Cleveland.com reports.
According to the boards April 9 report and recommendation, Baker staged a protest when Judge Nancy Fuerst of Cuyahoga County, Ohio, refused to give jurors a self-defense instruction during a felonious assault trial of Bakers client.
The protest consisted of repeated efforts to stop the trial from proceeding, the report said. Baker told Fuerst that he would sit at the back of the courtroom. Fuerst told Baker to sit down and be quiet. When Fuerst was instructing the jury, Baker left the defense table and stood behind a television stand. His intent, Baker said, was to show that he wasnt participating.
Baker was found in contempt in February 2020. He was ordered to pay a $500 fine and to write, 25 times each:
I will not engage in conduct that is prejudicial to the administration of justice or in any other conduct that adversely reflects on my fitness to practice law.
I shall not engage in conduct intended to disrupt a tribunal or engage in undignified or discourteous conduct that is degrading to a tribunal.
Cleveland.com has characterized the order as a Bart Simpson-esque dose of punishment.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — A disciplinary board this week asked the Ohio Supreme Court to publicly reprimand a defense attorney who received a Bart Simpson-esque punishment in 2020 after acting out during a trial in which his client was convicted of assaulting his partner.
The Ohio Supreme Courts Board of Professional Conduct said in a six-page report filed Monday that attorney Anthony Bakers conduct was unquestionably inappropriate, but he did not deserve to have his license suspended because he was already punished by the judge and his conduct was chronicled in the media.
The Ohio Supreme Court justices will determine whether to accept the boards finding at a later date.
Baker, who is based in Lorain, consented to the boards recommendation, according to court records.
Baker defended former East Cleveland police officer and Arena Football League player Denayne Davidson-Dixon against felonious assault and domestic violence charges that accused him of breaking multiple bones in his then-wifes face as the two argued in their home in 2019.
Davidson-Dixon appealed his conviction and the 8th District Court of Appeals has yet to issue a ruling.
