1. Sauce subs:
- Ketchup – sub with Tomato Sauce
- Cider vinegar – can sub with white wine, sherry or champagne vinegar, OR 2 tbsp normal white vinegar
- Onion powder – sub garlic powder or 1 garlic clove, finely minced
2. Chicken –Breast / boneless thighs
- Mix sauce WITHOUT water
- Use 1 kg / 2 lb breast or boneless thighs
- Follow the cooking directions in this recipe – Sticky Baked Chicken Thighs. ie coat with 2/3 sauce, bake on high, baste with remaining sauce & broil/grill to finish.
- Pan – light scrubbing will be required to clean! So either use glass/ceramic OR metal pan lined with foil then parchment/baking paper.
- Sauce thickness at end depends one many factors eg – how snug the chicken is in the baking dish, how juicy / fatty the chicken is, oven accuracy. But very easy to adjust – too thick, add splash of water, too thin, return just the pan to the oven for a minute or two

How Long Should You Cook Chicken In The Oven
Chicken Breasts Chicken breasts can be tricky to bake because they are very lean with little to no fat making it overcook them. Bake the bbq chicken in a preheated oven at 450 degrees for about 15 minutes or until the juices run clear and the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees. Baking your chicken breasts at a high temperature for a shorter amount of time ensures that they retain their moisture.
Chicken Thighs To bake boneless chicken thighs instead of breasts, preheat the oven to 450 degrees and just bake for a little longer, around 20-25 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees in the thickest part of the chicken. Chicken thighs have a higher fat content so you dont have to worry as much about them drying out. Bone-in chicken thighs will take an about 35-45 minutes.

Reduce The Sauce For Faster Cooking
Up to a certain point, we are going to cook the chicken and the BBQ sauce separately. It might sound a little fussy, but it guarantees us a few things. First, cooking the chicken on its own makes for crispy chicken skin. It also helps the chicken cook faster theres no sauce impeding cooking or opening and closing the oven to slow the cook time. Meanwhile, well be simmering the BBQ sauce on the stovetop to make it thicker, stickier, sweeter, and ready for a final basting. No burnt sauce or undercooked chicken here!
What Is Cross Contamination How Can I Avoid It
Cross contamination is where bacteria are accidentally transferred from one item to another. In this recipe, you need to be careful not to contaminate your barbecue sauce with bacteria from raw chicken. If you touch your chicken with a brush or spoon, and then stick that utensil back into the bowl, the sauce is now contaminated. This means that the sauce cannot be eaten unless it has been cooked.
To avoid this, use a clean spoon to transfer a small amount of sauce into a bowl, and then use a different spoon or brush to coat the chicken with this sauce. This will allow you to have extra sauce to coat your chicken with during the cooking process if youd like.

What You Need For Baked Bbq Chicken
Heres what you need. I dont use nor do we need a rub for this recipe because the chicken cooks in the BBQ Sauce so it sucks up plenty of flavour. Youll see the process steps below!
Best chicken cuts for BBQ Chicken cooked in the oven use bone in, skin on chicken pieces like thighs , legs and wings. Bone in breast / Maryland will also work here.
We need skin to get a really lovely glaze, and we need bone in pieces so they can be baked for 50 minutes so they absorb the flavour from the barbecue sauce without drying out.

This Oven Baked BBQ Chicken is made with a sweet-n-tangy spicy-n-sticky finger-licking-good barbecue sauce that is spruced up with hot pepper jelly. SO GOOD!
The second I saw this recipe by the Pioneer Woman, I knew I needed to make oven baked BBQ chicken. It’s funny that we’ve been to about a dozen barbecues this summer, but we haven’t had anything that is actually covered in delicious sweet tangy sticky finger-licking-good BBQ sauce in ages. It was time to change that.
This turned out amazing. And so easy. This oven baked BBQ chicken only has 5 ingredients. If you want, it can even be cut down to two ingredients – chicken and BBQ sauce. It’s that simple. But I do recommend the extra few ingredients to get the ultimate sticky-sweet BBQ glaze on the chicken.
The awesome thing about this recipe is that you can play around with the flavors of the sauce. For example, the original recipe calls for regular BBQ sauce and apricot preserves. I used Sweet & Spicy BBQ Sauce and added hot pepper jelly. You can use many combinations of BBQ sauce flavors and jellies/jams to tweak the sauce to your liking.
My only regret? Not doubling this recipe. We ate 2 pieces each, and would have loved to have some more as leftovers the next day.
Do Not Reuse The Basting Bbq Sauce
Once raw chicken comes in contact with a sauce its no longer safe to eat on its own.
Because you are basting the chicken, its ok to use the same sauce.
However once the chicken is done cooking do not add any more of the basting sauce onto the chicken.
Before beginning, measure out 1 cup of sauce into a small bowl to use only for basting the chicken.
Reserve more sauce in a separate container if desired for dipping or brushing onto the finished chicken .

What Kind Of Bbq Sauce Should I Use
You can use any kind you want! I live right down the street from Salt Lick BBQ in Driftwood, TX, and Im obsessed with their Spicy BBQ Sauce.
A lot of readers have commented that theyve used Sweet Baby Rays with great results.
Something to keep in mind: a lot of store-bought BBQ sauces have a lot of added sugar. Frankly, its what makes it taste so good and sugar is vital for getting that thick caramelization. You can make your own homemade bbq sauce if you prefer.
Prepare yourself for finger-licking deliciousness.

This oven baked BBQ Chicken is deliberately made with a barbecue sauce that is thinned out with water so:
it wont dry out in the oven and
to create enough sauce so the chicken absorbs the flavour as it bakes. We bake the chicken upside for the first half, then flip it for the second half so both sides get the benefit of the flavour, This is why we dont need a rub for this recipe.

How To Bake Different Cuts Of Chicken
What is the difference between a broiler chicken, fryer chicken and a roaster chicken? Well, they are all whole chickens and they can sometimes be used interchangeably but allow me to decode the mystery for you.
- A broiler is a young chicken and weighs around 2 ½ pounds.
- A fryer is also a young chicken and weighs between 2 and ½ and 3 ½ pounds.
- A roaster chicken weights 3 ½ pounds to 5 pounds and is between 7 and 8 months old.
The cooking time and temperature will depend on the weight of the chicken. You may think the name designates the cooking method but they can truly all be baked. If your recipe doesnt call for a whole chicken, it can probably be narrowed down to one of these four cuts-the wing, the breast, the thigh, and the drum stick.
Chicken breasts are the most common and versatile cut of the chicken for baking. They can be used as the main meal with sides like vegetables and potatoes, tossed on top of a salad or used in a sandwich.
Drumsticks and wings are less expensive cuts of the chicken and taste best when baked in marinade or delicious sauce. They are also easy to eat with your fingers because you can just pick them up, dip them, and enjoy.
Chicken thighs are considered to have a little more flavor due to the higher fat content.
What Kind Of Baking Sheet Should I Use
I cannot recommend enough using a Nordic Ware Natural Aluminum Bakers Half Sheet to make this oven baked BBQ chicken, and to roast literally anything you want. I have two and they are the ONLY baking sheets I will EVER use. Theyre super sturdy, so they dont buckle when the temperature changes . And they conduct heat well to make sure that your food is well cooked on the top and bottom, and they are really good at being non-stick, even though they dont have any non-stick coating .
PLUS, they are only around $12! Go get one!
If you prefer to bake the chicken on a rack, so it doesnt sit in the juices the whole time and crisps up a bit better, this rack nestles in perfectly to the rimmed baking sheet .
