Sweet Potato Dog Chews Instructions:
Preheat oven to 250° F.

Toss sweet potato slices in a large bowl with olive oil, stir and toss well to coat thoroughly.

Bake for 2 ½ to 3 hours.

Belle always likes to check out the ingredients before I start making treats.
Shes a big fan of banana, but . . .it didnt take her long to become good friends with this sweet potato!
These chewy sweet potato dog treats come together with only three ingredients. Yep, you heard me. THREE ingredients. Pretty incredible, right? Let me show you how I made them.
Start by slicing the sweet potato length-wise into long pieces. If youd like to peel your sweet potato, you can. Its not necessary though.
Because I like my treats to go a bit further, I take each of the slices and cut them in half. Theyre really going to skinny up in the oven, but Im okay with that. I didnt want too thick of slices for Belle.
After you toss the slices with olive oil, you sprinkle on a little cinnamon and then place them into the oven.
See how they kind of shrivel up into skinnier strips after baking? Again, if youd like thicker strips, just dont cut the slices in half.
The texture of the treats after baking is flexible and chewy. Belle LOVES the texture. I love that the treats are so good for her!
While these chewy sweet potato dog treats can be made year-round, I especially like making them in the fall. Bringing in those fall flavors of sweet potato and cinnamon.

My dogs personally like their treats crispy so I end up baking them for about 4 hours. If your dog prefers their treat chewy, try baking for about 2 ½ to 3 hours. The amount of time it takes to bake each chip will also depend on its size and thickness. The thinner the chip the faster it will crisp.

How To Make Dog Biscuits
I stash overripe bananas in the freezer. It is great for baking, but also for making snacks for the pup.
The dough is made entirely in the food processor, so there is minimal clean-up.
Once your dough is mixed, youll turn it out onto a floured work surface and using a rolling pin, roll it out to approximately 1/8 thick.
I use this set of dog bone cookie cutters to cut out my shapes.
Once you have cut as many as you can from the dough, gather it into a ball and re-roll it. Use a plastic bench scraper to help get the dough off of the counter its like having a non-stick hand!
Now that we have our shapes cut out, its time to bake! Place your dog cookies on a parchment paper lined baking sheet.
Bake treats for 16 18 minutes. You can store the treats on the counter in a cute dog treat jar for a few days, but remember that there are no preservatives in these treats, so they wont last as long on the counter as store bought.
I live in a warm, humid climate, so I tend to keep them in the fridge. Just like with any homemade baked good, no preservatives mean a shorter shelf life.
Recipe : Sweet Potato Dog Chews For Smaller Dogs
This recipe is very similar to Recipe 1 above. However, if you have a smaller dog they may struggle with the long slices of sweet potato used in the other recipe. This recipe cuts the sweet potato into coins so the pieces are smaller and easier for a smaller jaw to deal with.
I still think it is worth including the recipe separate to the other one above because then you get the correct cooking times and some lovely photos to see the end-product. Heres the recipe.

Sweet Potato And Oatmeal Dog Treats
These crisp and healthy sweet potato and oatmeal dog treats will be going in Graces Christmas stocking this year. I had one small sweet potato to use up so I created these dog treats along with mashed sweet potato, oatmeal, flour, egg, and a little cinnamon. These dog treats were quite simple to throw together and smelled pretty tasty while they baked. Grace was very eager to give them a taste test and she must have loved them because she devoured two in about 45 seconds and was pretty disappointed that she couldnt have another one.
Directions For Homemade Apple And Sweet Potato Dog Treats
- Peel the skin off of the sweet potatoes once theyve cooled and smash with a fork
- Add apples, mashed sweet potatoes, egg and cinnamon to a bowl and mix well
- Slowly add your wheat flor, mixing as you go. I used my hands for this part!
- Put dough in the fridge for 10-15 minutes to firm up a bit
- Reduce the oven temp to 375° F
Once everything is mixed well, its time to assemble the twists!
You dont have to make twists, you can use cookie cutters or make pretzel shapes or hearts. I just thought twists were a little different and perfect for the bigger dogs.
- On clean counter or cutting board, you should divide your dough in 1/2 them 1/4s but I pressed mine down into the bowl and then just took it out and cut it into a pizza. Dont judge me.
- Form a ball of one of your dough pieces and roll the dough out into a log with your hands.
- I rolled mine into about 16 inches logs
- Repeat with another piece of dough
- Braid the logs and twist a bit if you want the treat twists to be a little tighter
- Cut in half to make 8 inch twists
- Repeat these steps until done
- Bake your apple and sweet potato dog treats at 375° F for 40-45 minutes making sure to carefully flip 1/2 ways through.

Can Dogs Eat Sweet Potatoes
I chatted with my vet before I made these Sweet Potato Dog Chews and got the thumbs up, with the caveat that these are snacks and not her primary diet. Per our vets recommendation, Flora is on a grain-based diet, important for the amino acids, which grains are rich in.
Supplementing her grain-based diet with Sweet Potato is not only just o.k. but actually good for her. Sweet Potatoes are rich in Vitamins A, B6, C and calcium, potassium, and iron the benefit they have for humans is the same benefits for our puppers.
All that being said, it is not recommended for dogs to eat raw sweet potatoes. Dried, dehydrated and cooked sweet potatoes are much more digestible for dogs.
So, back to these yummy and healthy chews:
Truly, its just a matter of slicing your sweet potatoes and drying/dehydrating them in either your dehydrator or your oven. That being said, the thickness that you slice them is important. Too thin, you end up with sweet potato chips and too thick, and you have sweet potato leather/rubber.

Well, making this healthy veggie for a dog is even easier. This is because most of the ingredients such as butter, brown sugar, heavy cream, nutmeg, and salt are not included in the recipe.
Most of these condiments are not dog-friendly not to mention necessary. Dont get it twisted though, even without these flavor enhancers, the mash will taste delightful. The reason is simple: the food is already sweet in nature.

I. Wash and peel your sweet potatoes
For optimal results, soak them first in vinegar before washing them thoroughly. This step helps to draw the dirt out more than water alone will do.
Use a potato peeler or a knife to peel the potatoes.
Once peeled, give them one more wash and slice them into cubes.
II. Boil the cubed sweet potatoes
The best way to do this is to bring some water to a boil in a pot. As a rule of thumb, the water should cover the potatoes entirely.
Once it boils, throw in the potatoes, reduce the heat to medium and let them simmer away for 30 minutes.
To know if they are ready, pierce into one cube with a fork or knife. If it goes through with ease, the potatoes are done.
