Create A Signature Item
Tamara Boatman of The Lemon Tree Cottage Bakery got started by selling a pumpkin roll at a church bake sale. She said the customer then asked me if I could remake it for her for Thanksgiving. Others in the doctors office wanted one also, so I did and have been doing the same item now for several years.
Boatman explained that a signature item will establish you in the minds of your customers so they know in advance who to contact when they want that special something.

Once you have narrowed down a few places you would like to approach, it is then time to approach them and ask to sell there.
The best way to do this is to create a professional email template to send to them.
Start your email out by introducing yourself and telling them about your fully licensed home business. You should then express that you want to work with them and how your two brands complement one another. Attach a menu of everything and offer to bring them samples of your items.
Make sure to end your email by asking for a time to meet with them and include all of your contact information. This is a great template to work with and engages a small business so that they are prompted to reach back out to you quickly!
Many home bakery business owners have even found that once they get their foot in the door with one or two different coffee shops or small businesses, several others tend to reach out and ask to work with them and sell their products as well.

How Long Did It Take To Make The Recipe
One of the first things you should do is decide how much your time is worth. If you were going to work for someone else doing this work, what would you expect to get paid? Remember, the better you are, the more you can charge for your time. You can always increase your hourly rate, but to start with, just pick a realistic hourly rate.
My direct labor is 2 hours per batch. I have valued my time at $15/hour. so my direct labor is $30 per batch. If I divide that by 18 cookies, my direct labor is $1.60 per cookie.
What Are Cottage Foods
Cottage foods are non-potentially hazardous foods, such as baked goods, jams and jellies. These can be baked outside of a commercial kitchen inside your home and sold to consumers under the cottage food law.
Some ingredients have the potential to cause problems if the food were to go bad, like meat, seafood and dairy products. These items cannot be used to bake cottage foods, to help ensure that products sold under the cottage foods law are safe to eat.

Make Sure That You Can Legally Sell To Coffee Shops And Other Small Businesses
There are particular laws in every state when it comes to running your home bakery. There are some states that do not allow home bakeries at all while other states allow home bakeries but only allow them to sell out of their homes.
Still, other states do not allow you to sell your items at wholesale in coffee shops and some say you can sell out of coffee shops but you can only sell a few items in particular such as cookies or cupcakes.
Meanwhile, other places say that as long as you are a fully licensed home bakery, you can sell your goods out of any coffee shop and it does not matter which goods you sell as long as they are cooked safely.
It is vitally important to make sure you can legally sell home baked goods out of another business, or the entire point of reaching out to businesses will be moot.

Selling Sandwiches At The Farmers Market
If you let the sandwiches sit in the oven for too long they will be extremely dry and they will also harden which isnt the best. In addition to this, you will have to refrigerate the sandwiches if you are selling them the next day, this way they do not dry out. You should also store and sell them in individual packages, to avoid drying them out.

Your products may taste great when you bake them a dozen at a time or one cake at a time, but how does your product taste when you start pushing it out in bulk numbers?
How do your baked goods look when you start baking them in bulk?
How do they taste when you start taking the recipe and baking your products at huge quantities?
Do they taste and look good enough to be displayed out in a display case at a coffee shop or a small cafe in your area?
Do they look good enough to entice people to buy based on what they see so the coffee shop continues to partner with you?
Before you start selling, practice baking your chosen products in large quantities and have people test them out and tell you how you can improve upon them.

How To Plan A Bake Sale
Every successful venture needs a group to head it up, make decisions, and delegate responsibilities. Get your group together, choose a chairperson, and divide up the work. The main areas to organize are volunteers, equipment, publicity, and the baked goods to be sold.
But hang on, there’s one thing you need to do before anything else:
Check into local health regulations or school rules around selling home-baked food.
- Some states require a special permit which is usually free of charge, but must be approved before the event takes place. Check the public health guidelines in your area ahead of time so you can complete forms and meet food safety requirements.
- Some schools have adopted eating policies that could limit the types of food you sell or the time of day it is sold.
Many hands make light work. You’ll need bakers, sign-makers, donation-wranglers, folks who can set up and tear down, and people to sell the goods. Break down the day into shifts so volunteers don’t get burned out, and post the volunteer schedule so everybody knows where they’re supposed to be and when.
Essential Bake Sale Gear

Have Your Business Cards Ready At All Times
Business cards still continue to be highly effective in selling a business to potential clients. This isnt different for a baking business run from your home.
Whenever you deliver baked goods to clients, you may want to keep or leave behind a few business cards.
This is important because when your delicious products are tasted, youre able to satisfy the curiosity of others by giving them your contact details. Before long, youll begin to have a steady stream of orders.
This gives you positive feedback about how well your products are received.
Adding In Overhead Costs To The Mark Up For Pricing Bakery Goods
There are two types of costs involved: fixed costs and variable costs.
Fixed costs-This is the cost associated with running your business that doesnt change each month, like rent for kitchen space, farmers market fees, website maintenance, etc. To cover the cost of my overhead, I divide my monthly costs by the number of units I produce each month.
I am a home baker selling cookies and muffins at the farmers market. My overhead costs are: website 8.00/month, farmers market fees $35/month, printing costs $10.00/month. My overhead is $53.00/month. I sell 400 items per month. My fixed cost is $53/400, or .13 per unit.
Variable costs This is the cost that increases when your production increases: cupcake liners, parchment paper, etc. Remember to include the shipping cost for ordering supplies and the tax you paid on those supplies. Each cookie gets a cellophane bag, a ribbon, and a tag.
Each recipe includes everything consumable associated with that product. In my cookie recipe, I include 18 cellophane bags, 1 1/2 rolls of ribbon, and 18 printed tags. My packaging costs per cookie are .04 ea.

How To Sell Baked Goods From Home
Do you have great baking skills?
You might also want to turn that to a money-spinning venture by selling your goods right from the comfort of your home. Obviously this requires a great deal of work on your part.
Like any business, youll need to put in the work required to make significant progress.
Reason : Guessing Or Pricing Like Your Competition Isnt Accurate
There are several ways that people decide on a selling price. Here are a few examples of scenarios I have been in as a business owner.
Pricing based on your competition Lets say you are a gourmet cupcake store in a town with another gourmet cupcake store. The other cupcake shop sells their cupcakes for $3.00 ea. You know that your customers will pay that price because they already are at the other store. You price your cupcakes at the same price as your competition.
Pricing based on demand You are the only cupcake store in town. People love your cupcakes and stand in line to buy them. You price your cupcakes at the highest price that people will continue to pay.
In very simple terms, you should be trying to make the right quantity of product that your customers will buy, then charge as much as you can to get rid of it. If you cant get rid of that quantity, start discounting it and adjust your quantity the next time you bake.
In the end it really comes down to finding a balance between how much you make and how much you charge.
