Wilting Economy Pushes Pair Of Flower Shops Away From Main Street

Spring’s arrival Friday won’t have quite the bloom it once had on

Baker City’s Main Street due to the loss of two longtime flower shops.

The Flower Box, owned by Paula Ralls, just completed its move from Main Street to a smaller building at 1919 Washington Ave.

And Baker City Floral and Gifts, owned by Jana Simpson, is holding a

moving sale in preparation for a relocation to the basement of her

home, where she will continue to sell flower arrangements and balloons

Both business owners cited the need to downsize and reduce overhead

costs to survive the economic downturn among the factors behind their

moves off Baker City’s historic Main Street, where several other

businesses have also consolidated and downsized, leaving empty

buildings and an empty space in the Basche Sage Mall.

At her new Washington Avenue location, Ralls said the move has been positive because the rent and other overhead costs allowed her to keep all of her employees and add new products, including “Meri The Fairy” greeting cards, “Coffee Cafe Creations” flavored coffees and others.

Before the move, Ralls said business had dropped off to the point she was looking at laying off part of her staff of one full time flower arranger, two part-time workers and a part-time bookkeeper.

“Downsizing allows me to keep all of my employees. That’s the main thing,” Ralls said.

Besides saving on rent, Ralls said the smaller building has substantially cut her costs for heat, lights and cleaning.
