Does It Really Matter If I Use Pure Vanilla Extract

Mrs. Fields Kids Toy Baking Factory! Miniature Fresh Baked Chocolate Chip Cookies

Yes! I know pure vanilla extract is pricey, but it is totally worth it in this recipe. Again, like using all butter in this recipe, you will get a cookie that tastes like Mrs. Fields if you use pure vanilla extract. My friend, Ronica, uses McCormick All Natural Pure Vanilla. The cookies will still taste good if you use imitation vanilla extract.

What Does It Mean To Cream The Butter And Sugar Together

Creaming butter and sugar together is key to getting giving structure to your dough so that a cookie is light and fluffy. This is because you are incorporating air into the mix when you beat the butter.

When creaming your butter and sugar together, it is important to make sure that you start with soft butter. Add the butter and sugar to the mixing bowl and mix on medium speed for 2-3 minutes. You want to make sure that you stop when you get firm peaks. Be careful not to overmix because you will end up with an oily mix that fails to incorporate the air you need to make this recipe.

How To Store These Chocolate Chip Cookies

These chocolate chip cookies can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week. If you want them to last longer, you can freeze the dough or the baked cookies for up to 3 months. Just make sure to wrap them tightly in plastic wrap or freezer-safe bags to prevent them from drying out.

Can I Use Imitation Vanilla For This Recipe

You can use imitation vanilla instead of real vanilla extract in this recipe. Vanilla is in high demand and short supply as of late. This means that the price is going to go up, making imitation vanilla a more economical option.

To save on the cost of real vanilla extract, I make my own vanilla at home. To do this, soak three to five vanilla beans in vodka and store the mix in a mason jar in a cool, dry place.

Once the alcohol turns a rich dark brown color, it has extracted much of the vanillin from the beans, adopting their flavor. Use it as you would use ordinary vanilla extract. It does not go bad but should remain in a cool, dry place for the duration of its lifetime.

Mrs. Fields Cookies are one of Americas favorite chocolate chip cookies. Made with ground oats and a few other twists this recipe is REALLY good! And a bit different. All you cookie lovers out there. This one is just for you!

Lately, I have made Ranger cookies, no bake cookies and Peanut butter cookies for my sweet tooth controlled hubby. I found this recipe for Mrs Fields cookies languishing in my recipe box.

I made them this week for him and now I know why Mrs Fields cookies are so popular. This homemade version is so delicious you will prefer it to store bought!

Ive had this copycat Mrs Fields Cookie recipe floating around in my recipe box FOREVER. The point of origin is a mystery but I suspect a friend or church member.

Someone took the time back in the day, to type out this recipe and its story. They dated it 1-31-86 and ran it through a mimeograph. They even initialed it. The machine it was copied on was of awful quality. Probably a church or school machine.

I believe they did mass produce this recipe to share it all over . My copy is about 4 x 6 on a well folded piece of barely legible paper. It was typed on an old manual typewriter too! A bit of Americana nostalgia

How To Make Chewy Cookies:

There two main ingredients in this recipe that result in chewy oatmeal chocolate chip cookies: oats and brown sugar. The blended oat flour is essential to the added chewy texture, and the molasses in brown sugar makes it a more moist sugar than white sugar, resulting in a chewier cookie.

Storing and Freezing Instructions:

Allow cookies to cool completely, then promptly store them in an air-tight container at room temperature for up to 5 days, or freeze them, stored in a freezer-safe container, for up to 3 months.

How To Make Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies:

  • Mix butter, sugar, eggs, and vanilla until smooth.
  • Blend oats until the oats are powdered.
  • Mix dry ingredients: combine the flour, blended oats, salt, baking powder, and baking soda.
  • Combine dry ingredients into the wet ingredients. Stir in the chocolate chips.
  • Scoop cookie balls and place them on a prepared baking sheet.
  • Bake at 350 for 9-11 minutes or until the tops look set. Cookies will harden as they cool, so dont over-bake them.

Why Should I Be Careful To Not Overmix Wet And Dry Ingredients Together

Mrs. Fields Cookies: Rainbow Chip & Semi-Sweet Chocolate Review

Note that at this phase of the recipe, we have already creamed our butter and sugar together and we are now adding the remainder of our dry ingredients. We want to be careful not to overmix because we just incorporated those valuable microscopic air bubbles into our butter to get that light, fluffy mix. If we were to overmix, we would get a more oily mixture that loses all of those air bubbles we worked so hard for. This will lead to flat, dense cookies.

Why Do I Need To Pack My Brown Sugar When Measuring

Mrs Fields Cookies, Soft Baked, Oatmeal Raisin with Walnuts

Packing your brown sugar is crucial for making consistent measurements. If you do not pack your brown sugar, you are leaving little air pockets in your measuring cup that will reduce the true amount of brown sugar you are adding to the recipe.

These pockets are never uniform, meaning that scooping without packing will add a different quantity each time. Thus, one should always pack their brown sugar when measuring even if the recipe does not call for it.

Here Are A Few Tricks For Perfect Cookies

    • Use cold butter. Dont skip this step and dont melt it.
    • Use dark brown sugar its got a much better depth of flavor.
    • Using a better vanilla extract is key.
    • The best kind of Nielsen-Massey Vanilla extract, sold at Williams Sonoma and some fine grocery stores. It is pricey. A more moderate vanilla extract would do just fine, however a higher end more concentrated one will really amp up the flavor, and the smell of the cookies!
  • Dark chocolate chips, I used Ghirardelli, are my favorite for these. Almost a savory flavor, mixed with the sweet cookie doughyummm! Sprinkle a touch of sea salt on top if you like.
