Mayfield was originally owed $18.858 million but agreed to a $3.5 million pay cut. He can earn back what he gave up in incentives.

Mayfield was born on April 14, 1995, in Austin, Texas, to James and Gina Mayfield as the second of two sons. James, a private equity consultant, encountered financial difficulties during his younger son’s senior year in high school. These struggles forced the Mayfields to sell their family home and move from rental home to rental home.
Mayfield grew up as a fan of Oklahoma, and he attended a number of their games during his childhood. His father played football for three years for the University of Houston, though James never lettered.
Mayfield was the starting quarterback for the Lake Travis High School Cavaliers football team in Austin. He led Lake Travis to a 252 record in two seasons and won the 2011 4A State Championship. He finished his high school football career totaling 6,255 passing yards, 67 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. A 3-star recruit, Mayfield received light recruitment and only earned scholarship offers from Florida Atlantic, New Mexico, North Texas, Rice, Sam Houston State, and Wyoming, but also received preferred walk-on offers from Baylor, Texas Tech, and Washington State.

One thing Panthers fans wanted to know the moment the team acquired QB Baker Mayfield from the Cleveland Browns was what jersey number he would wear. Punter Johnny Hekker, who signed with the team in April, claimed the No. 6 jersey as backup quarterback PJ Walker agreed to switch to No. 11.
During Tuesday’s introductory press conference, Mayfield revealed that he agreed to a deal with Hekker to wear No. 6.
“I guess it’s time to break the news,” Mayfield said. “I made a deal in my own negotiating with Johnny. Obviously, when it comes to a four-time All-Pro you have to ask for permission and he was willing to make that sacrifice. He’s a guy that’s got a chip on his shoulder as well. You know, undrafted free agent that spent his whole career with the Rams and now he’s got a chip on his shoulder. But I’ve had fun getting to know him over the phone. He seems like a great guy and a great leader.”
Moments after Baker broke the news, Hekker posted a hilarious GIF on Twitter to gloat about what he received in his end of the deal.
In an article on Panthers.com, Hekker didn’t unveil how much money Mayfield paid him for the number but did explained his reasoning behind it all, which mustered up a few laughs on social media.
Hekker’s new number has not been updated on the team’s site as of Wednesday morning.

Baker Mayfield may have a new team and coaching staff for the 2022 season, but he won’t have to worry about wearing a new jersey number.
On Tuesday, Mayfield was officially introduced as the newest member of the Carolina Panthers. While speaking to the media, he revealed that he’ll wear No. 6 for this upcoming season.
Mayfield had to work out a deal with punter Johnny Hekker to get his favorite jersey number.
“Six is a special number to me,” Mayfield told reporters. “It was the number I was given as a walk-on. It symbolizes my story.”
Mayfield will compete with Sam Darnold for the starting quarterback job in Carolina. He revealed that he’s eager to work with the former USC star.
“Weve been talking about how to get the guys together the last minute before camp. Its been great. Sam just wants to win. Thats just who he is. Our personalities might be different, but that doesnt mean we dont have the same goal, and thats to win and help this team out,”Mayfield said. “Im really looking forward to being in that room with him and just challenging each other, and elevating each other.”
Time will tell if Mayfield just needed a change of scenery to revert to his 2020 form.
