Baked Potato Salad With Ranch

Must Try

Two: Cook The Potatoes

Cheddar Bacon Ranch Potato Salad
  • Place the potatoes into a large saucepan, cover with cold water, and generously salt the water. It is essential to begin cooking the potatoes in cold water so that they cook evenly.
  • Bring the water to a rapid boil, over medium-high heat. Continue cooking until the potatoes are just fork-tender, about 15 minutes.
  • Once tender, drain the water off the potatoes, and return the potatoes to the hot pan. Toss the potatoes around in the pan, until the water is evaporated from the potatoes. Don’t skip this step. Removing the excess water from the potatoes will allow the flavors of the potato to shine through and the potato salad to not be watered down.
  • Spread the potatoes out onto a sheet pan to allow them to cool to room temperature quickly.

A Few Potato Boiling Tips

  • Salt the water. Once the water comes to a boil, generously salt the water. This will flavor the potatoes, which in turn will make the salad that much more delicious. If the potato salad tastes flat or bland, the potatoes were probably under-seasoned. My rule of thumb: add 1 teaspoon salt to every 4 cups of water.
  • Start the potatoes in cold water. When boiling potatoes, its important they start in cold water because this allows the potatoes to cook evenly
  • Check the potatoes often. If the potatoes cook too long in the water, theyll end up mushy or water-logged. Check them often for tenderness as soon as you can pierce the potatoes with a fork, theyre ready.

How Long Do You Need To Boil Potatoes For Potato Salad

The trick for potato salad is to cook the potatoes just enough but not so much that they get mushy. To get perfectly cooked new potatoes, start by cutting them into even 1 inch pieces. Larger pieces will cause the smaller pieces to cook too much. Add to cold water and then bring it to a boil. Reduce the heat to simmer and cook uncovered for about 8-10 minutes. You want a fork to pierce them easily without the potato falling apart.

Is anyone else struggling to get through these last couple days of school? I have been counting down the minutes that my kids get out of school. I am pretty sure that I am just as excited as they are about school being out. My kids have been lucky to be dressed and to school on time. Every morning when my alarm goes off I am tempted to keep them home because it is the last week! But then I remember that I am now the responsible parent and so I drag myself out of bed. But I keep telling myself it is only two more days and I can do it!

I am ready for summer. And I am ready for all of the barbecues! It is my favorite part of summer. I LOVE finding new side dishes to take. And this Bacon Ranch Potato Salad will blow your mind!

Loaded Potato Salad can be served chilled, room temperature or warmed. I have tried it all three ways and while each is delicious, I am partial to room temperature or warmed. Room temperature works out well because you dont have to stress about the salad staying chilled when taking it to a potluck. Just let the salad come to room temperature for about 30 minutes before serving

Tips For Making The Best Potato Salad

Do not over boil the potatoes. Over boiling the potatoes will make for a soggy potato salad.

Allow everything to cool enough. Potato salad is best served cold. You dont want to stick hot potato salad in the fridge, be sure to allow the potatoes to cool enough before adding the rest of the ingredients and to cool it enough after mixing everything together.

Add the potatoes to cold water then boil. You may have been told forever to boil the water then add the potatoes. Trust me and do it with adding them at the same time, this way all of the potato is cooked evenly.

I grew up eating homemade potato salad. It was your traditional potato salad made with chopped onions, eggs, salt, mayonnaise, and mustard. Simple, but so delicious!

I love potato salad and actually eat it all year long. See, my husband is from the South and they have a love affair with potato salad.

Occasionally, I like to get a little creative when I make potato salad.

I love the flavors of a loaded baked potato the crispy bacon, the savory cheddar cheese and green onions and the tangy sour cream. All of those flavors perfectly combine with the lightly salty potato.

I decided that I wanted to take the flavor to the next level, so I decided to add a homemade ranch dressing to the mix.

How To Make Ranch Potato Salad

Cook the potatoes. Choose Yukon gold potatoes of the same size or cut in half, cooking with the skin on. Season the cooking water with kosher salt to flavor them from the inside. When the skin begins to separate from the whites, the potatoes are done cooking. Allow the potatoes to cool to the touch, then peel and dice.

Prepare the Ranch dressing. Ive doubled my recipe for the homemade Ranch dressing. It will absorb into the potatoes as it sits and nobody likes a dry potato salad.

Add the chopped red onion and hard boiled egg. I love my egg slicer. It makes quick and clean work of chopping slippery hard boiled eggs. If green onion is more your thing, switch it up.

Mix, then give this salad a rest. Taste for seasoning and add more salt and pepper or onion powder to taste. Refrigerate this potato salad for at least 30 minutes up to 2 days prior to serving.
