How To Discard Bacon Grease

How To Cook Perfect Bacon In The Oven!

Probably my favorite thing about baking bacon versus pan-frying is how easy the clean-up is.

As the bacon bakes, the grease will drip down onto the foil-lined baking sheet. You can opt to save your bacon grease to cook with or discard the grease in the trash.

Remember to NEVER POUR BACON GREASE DOWN SINK DRAIN!! This is a sure-fire way to end up with a clog at some point, as grease hardens as it cools.

The correct method for discarding bacon grease is to allow the grease to cool fully and harden and then discard with the foil in the trash.

Alternatively, you can allow the grease to cool slightly and then pour the grease into a metal can or glass jar. DO NOT use plastic, or the grease will melt the plastic. Once the grease has hardened you can scoop it out of the jar and discard it in the trash. Or you can store the jar under the sink and add to it every time you make bacon. Once the jar is full, discard the entire jar.

For Sandwiches And Burgers: Between Two Baking Sheets

For this method, I line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper, place bacon on top of it, top with another sheet of parchment, then place a second tray on top before throwing it all in the oven. This technique results in extremely well-rendered and evenly browned and crisp baconkeeping it flat means the bacon is essentially shallow-frying in its own fat the whole timeas well as bacon that lies completely flat. The only downside is that, because evaporation is inhibited, it takes longer to crisp, about 25 to 30 minutes.

Why would you ever want flat bacon, you ask? It’s mainly a boon for sandwiches and burgers, because it makes the bacon much easier to stack. BLTs for a crowd? This is the technique for you. It’s also a great way to keep a bacon weave nice and flat as it bakes, like I did for my Ultimate Bacon Cheeseburgers.

Texture: Very crisp and evenly browned, with a few lightly chewy bits. Completely flat, with fat that melts as you chew.Ease of Setup: Moderate.Ease of Cleanup: Moderate.

Storing And Reheating Bacon

Storing bacon is easy. Once it’s cooled, store it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to five days. Reheat the bacon in a skillet over low heat or in the microwave in short 15-second bursts.

You can also freeze the bacon if you made a big batch. Just make sure to freeze the strips individually, or in between pieces of parchment paper, so they don’t stick together.

Whats The Best Temperature For Baking Bacon

  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Some recipes suggest baking bacon at 425 degrees F, 375 degrees F, or starting the bacon in a cold oven, but I discovered that the optimal temperature for baking bacon is 400 degrees F. It cooks the bacon uniformly, regardless of thickness, and it doesnt splatter.
  • Make use of a rack. The rack not only makes the bacon healthier, but it also makes it crispier and more evenly cooked. To prevent the bacon from sticking to the rack, spray it with nonstick spray first. If you dont have an oven-safe rack and want to know how to cook bacon in the oven without one, simply cook the bacon directly on aluminum foil.
  • When Your Bacon Is Bad, Youll Know It. There are a few general guidelines to keep in mind.
  • You can use the expiration date printed on the package if the bacon is still in its original unopened package. To be safe, if youve already opened the packaging, cook the bacon within one week after opening.

The Easiest Way To Cook Bacon

We don’t have to tell you that cooking bacon is often messy. The slices splatter and spit as they crisp up in the frying pan. They cover your stove, cabinet, counters, and anything in a four-foot radius with a fine mist of slippery grease.

Most frying pans can only fit six to eight slices, if you’re cooking with the biggest pan in your cabinet. Otherwise, you’re left babysitting grease-spraying bacon for batch after batch. No thank you.

The next time you need to cook any amount of bacon, reach for a rimmed baking sheet, and turn on the oven, not the stove.

By cooking bacon in the oven, you can closely monitor and ensure each slice is cooked just as you want it. You can also easily reserve the bacon grease for other recipes, like Killed Lettuce, Bacon-Infused Bourbon, or Baked BLT Dip.

Oven Bacon Recipe â The No

If youre in a hurry, using your ovens broiler setting is a great way to quickly cook a batch of bacon. The one caveat is that youll need to stay nearby and watch the bacon closely. Also, this method tends to make the bacon spatter more, which can lead to a smoky oven and kitchen.

Turn the oven setting to Broil-medium temperature and move the oven rack, if necessary, to the middle of the oven. Arrange bacon strips on a foil-lined baking sheet.

Broil until the top of the bacon is brown and crispy, about 5-7 minutes. Watch carefully so it doesnt over cook. Turn the bacon over, return to the oven and broil until the the other side is browned and crispy, 2 to 4 more minutes. Drain on paper towels and serve.
