Has Merrick Ever Been Recalled
Yes. In May 2018, some Merrick beef-based dog treats were recalled because of potentially elevated beef thyroid hormone. The company said it was aware of a single customer complaint of a sickened dog. The affected treats were sold around the country through pet specialty, grocery and online retailers, with limited distribution in Canada.
Several years earlier, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration conducted routine testing and found salmonella in some Merrick pet treats, triggering other recalls. Those recalls were in , and . No illnesses had been reported around the time of these recalls.
In , there was a recall situation that did not directly involve any Merrick brands, but it did involve a dry dog food that had been manufactured by Merrick at its facility in Texas. The food was Go! Natural, and it was tied to the deaths of 20-plus dogs in the San Francisco Bay area.
Go! Natural had contracted with Merrick in June 2003 to manufacture the pet food. Just months later, complaints were rolling in of dogs being sickened with serious liver problems after eating the food. Petcurean issued a recall. After an investigation, the FDA found that the food contained undisclosed BHA, though this alone was not a definitive cause of the liver problems experienced by the dogs in fact, no such definitive cause was ever found.

While it would be easy for American Journey to limit its range of formulas, especially since its almost exclusively sold online, the brand actually offers an impressive variety. Although American Journeys dry food formulas are its most popular offering, the brand also includes wet food and a variety of treats.
When it comes to American Journey dry food recipes, there are currently four different lines: Grain-Free, Limited Ingredient, Brown Rice, and High-Protein. Within these product lines, youll also find formulas specifically designed for weight management, puppies, large breeds, and senior dogs.

Its hard to ignore this advice. As consumers, you can buy whatever dog food you like for your dog. However, we cant be responsible for recommending foods that might be harmful, even if only a few dogs out a thousands might become sick.

Brand History & Recalls
While we werent able to find an actual date for when the brand started, we are fairly certain that its new. A quick trademark search of the USPTO.gov website shows that the trademark was filed in April of 2017, and looking at the Chewy.com website, you can see that 2017 was when the first reviews started coming in about the food. This tells us its been around for about 3 years now, making it a newer food brand when compared to some of the older brands.
We do know that American Journeys food is produced in Kansas, and their Limited Ingredient Grain-Free formula is produced in California. We also know that they source from reputable suppliers both in the US and worldwide. Its likely that depending on the scenario, some of the meat from their products could come from a different country.
Based on our research, we are unable to find any recall data for any of their foods. This means that since the brand has been established, they havent had a single recall, which is impressive for such a newer dog food brand. This is especially impressive for one thats not as hard on your budget!
