Tips For Making Roasted Brussel Sprouts

  • Bake at 425°F. on the center oven rack
  • Some people say to roast vegetables, the oven needs to be scorching hot. Thats true, to a point. High heat is what caramelizes the sugars in the veggies, but if the heat is too high, the olive oil will burn. Also, before you turn on the oven, move one of your oven racks to the center position. Thats the best place for baking/roasting anything in the oven.

  • Give the sprouts some space on the pan.
  • Overcrowding veggies on the pan causes them to steam cook, and thats not what youre looking for with this recipe. If you need to use two sheet pans, go for it.

  • Place brussel sprouts cut side down on the pan.
  • I realize that you may not have the time to do this step, and its okay if you dont. Ill just say that placing the flat sides against the pan traps the heat inside the sprouts, allowing the insides to become soft while the high heat caramelizes the outsides.

This, my friends, is roasted brussels sprouts heaven.

I think the key to why my recipe got so successful was due to the fact that the brussel sprouts were roasted first, THEN tossed in the vinegar and honey after, thus veggies were still crispy, but had a wonderful glaze all over, too!

Toss In A Bowl Not On The Pan

    Oven Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Bacon Recipe {Easy Roasted Veggie}

Do not make the mistake of trying to toss the brussels sprouts in the salt, pepper, and olive oil directly on the sheet pan, instead of in a mixing bowl. You really cant toss them as effectively and evenly on the sheet pan. It does dirty a mixing bowl, but the oil disperses much more evenly, which makes a big difference for browning. Its also a lot eaiser than trying to do it on the sheet pan.

Brussels Should Never Be Boiled Ew

I distinctly remember the first time I ate a Brussels sprout. I had gone to one of those buffet places with a giant salad bar with a couple of friends. They had some cold, boiled Brussels sprouts in the salad bar, so I grabbed one.

We never ate Brussels as a kid. My mom had never liked them either

So I decided that was that day I was going to try one, despite their reputation as being a horrible task to push through to get a dessert.

I put it in my mouth and chewed for a second. It came out immediately.

Im not a super dramatic, spitting-out-food type of person. It rarely happens. But when that bitter, slimy sprout hit my tongue, I wanted it out as soon as possible.

NO WONDER why theyre hated so much! They can be sooooo nasty if they arent prepared well! Can I just suggest that we quit boiling all vegetables? There has to be a petition going around. Or some legislation we can pass.

OK, boiling potatoes is fine. Because Im not sure I want to live in a world without mashed potatoes.

I included a full recipe for baked brussels sprouts below, but really you dont need a recipe for this. Here are the basic instructions.

How To Remove The Bitterness In Brussels Sprouts#

Roasted Brussels Sprouts | Megan Mitchell

Many people have been traumatized by bitter Brussels sprouts at one point or another, so were here to make sure you never run into this problem.

Heres the first thing you need to know about Brussels sprouts: you must not overcook them. Thats the golden rule. The moment they cook too long in the oven, they release glucosinolate the thing that makes the Brussels sprouts foul-smelling and terrible tasting.

You also need to learn how to choose the right Brussels sprouts. Pick ones that are firm to the feel and have a vibrant green hue. They should have compact leaves void of brown and yellow spots. Choose smaller instead of bigger sprouts , because they are sweeter. Bigger ones, on the other hand, taste bitter and more cabbage-like.

Prep your brussels sprouts before you roast them. Trim the stems off, peel off their outer leaves, and slice them in half. The last part is especially important because doing so gets rid of thiocyanate, the acidic compound that makes Brussels sprouts bitter.

Season the Brussels sprouts well. Doing so will balance out their bitterness. All you need is a little olive oil, salt, and pepper.

The best cooking method to ensure bitter-free Brussels sprouts is to roast them. Please, do not be tempted to steam, boil, or microwave them, because youre just going to end up with bitter and foul-smelling Brussels sprouts. But, if you roast them, you bring out their natural sweetness, making them taste fantastic.

How Long Do You Cook Brussels Sprouts At 350 In Air Fryer

In an air fryer preheated to 350 degrees, Brussels Sprouts need 10 to 15 minutes to cook and have that crispy brown exterior, however, keep in mind that the timing can be slightly different depending on the air fryer you are using.

If cooking from frozen, Brussels Sprouts will take around 15 to 20 minutes to cook in a 350 degrees preheated air fryer.

Is It Better To Roast Brussel Sprouts Whole Or Cut In Half

You can technically do either, but we think that cutting them in half first gives you better roasted Brussel sprouts. It gives the sprouts more surface area for delicious caramelization and browning. Plus, it speeds up the roasting time. Overcooking Brussels sprouts is where the stereotypical stinkiness comes from, so a quicker cooking time keeps the veggies sweet rather than bitter.

Which Is The Best Cooking Temperature For Brussel Sprouts

After numerous tests, I find that nothing beats the brussel sprouts roasted at 400 degrees. The fabulous combination of crispiness and tenderness you find in each bite makes you fall in love with this veggie and start baking them for every occasion. The cooking time is just right as it allows us to prepare this dish as an appetizer or a super fast side dish. The 375 degrees option is also a nice choice, yet it renders the sprouts less crispy. But if you like your brussel sprouts to be extra soft and just a bit golden, 375 degrees is your go-to.

Recipe For Roasted Brussel Sprouts In Oven / Oven

Brussels sprouts need some breathing room on the pan, or theyll produce so much steam that they never crisp up. Its better to use two pans, arranged on separate racks near the middle of the oven, than to cram too many sprouts on one pan. See my note in the recipe for more details.

Tips For Perfect Roasted Brussels Sprouts

Brussels Sprouts often get a bad name, but with the right planning and preparation they really do have a ton of potential! To get the perfect, crispy sprouts, slice them in half and place cut side down on a baking sheet before roasting, and shake halfway through to ensure they cook nice and evenly.

For an extra layer of flavor, be sure to coat your Brussels Sprouts evenly with olive oil, lemon juice and, of course, salt and pepper. Keep a good eye on them throughout cooking to make sure they dont overcook because, lets face it, nobody likes soggy sprouts. For the same reason, avoid unintentional steaming by taking care to not overcrowd your baking tray.
