How To Cook Radishes
Preparing radishes for roasting is very quick and cooking them is very simple! All you need to do is dice up your radishes, mix them with olive oil, salt and pepper for taste and then bake them at 400 degrees for 25 to 35 minutes. You can even cook them in a skillet over the stove top if you prefer. To make them taste as close to potatoes as possible, you would need to roast them long enough so that they become nice and dry. Since radishes contain more water than potatoes, they take a little longer in the oven for them to become dry and crispy. If you dice them as per our recipe, they will roast a lot faster. The more even the sizes are, the more likely they are to roast evenly.

This controversial diet is all about putting your body into a ketogenic state, which happens when your body runs on fat instead of carbs. By eating a diet low in carbs and high in fats, you can burn fat in a process called ketosis.
The diet is pretty strict, with an explicit list of foods you should be eating and others you should be avoiding. Because the diet eliminates even natural carbs and sugars, a lot of foods that are typically considered healthy are not on the list of items you can have.
Here are a few of the surprising foods you can’t eat on the keto diet.

Make eating keto a lot easier with this comprehensive keto diet food listplus learn if it’s the right diet for you.
The ketogenic diet is a high-fat, moderate-protein and very low-carbohydrate diet. Carbohydrates are the body’s preferred source of energy, but on a strict ketogenic diet, less than 5 percent of energy intake is from carbohydrates . The reduction of carbohydrates puts the body into a metabolic state called ketosis. Ketosis is when the body starts breaking down stored fat into molecules called ketone bodies to use for energy, in the absence of circulating blood sugar from food. Once the body reaches ketosis, most cells will use ketone bodies to generate energy until you start eating carbohydrates again.
Traditionally, the ketogenic diet was only used in clinical settings to reduce seizures in children with epilepsy. “Now there is a lot of interest in the diet’s effectiveness in helping with other neurological conditions, cancer, diabetes, PCOS , obesity, high cholesterol and cardiovascular disease,” says Emily Stone, M.S., R.D. People also eat keto to lose weight .
Even if you know that you need to eat a very low-carb, high-fat, moderate protein dietit can be confusing to know which foods to eat. Here’s our guide to foods you can eat, foods you should avoid and foods you can sometimes have when you’re following a ketogenic diet.

While there are slight differences between their total carbs, the truth is, all potatoes are starchy vegetables that would be difficult to incorporate into a low-carb keto diet.
If you want to include a small amount of sweet potatoes into your meals, selecting Japanese sweet potatoes, with the lowest carb count, would be the most logical choice.
But since the differences are small and all these sweet potatoes come with different benefits and slightly different tastes, we recommend selecting according to those, rather than carbs.
Sweet Potato Net Carbs
To figure out the net carbs in sweet potato, we subtract the total fiber from the total carbs. Simple enough, right?
Based on the previous information, this means that 100 grams of sweet potato will have 17.41 net carbs.
A medium, 5 sweet potato will have roughly 19.81 net carbs. A sweet potato nutritional chart is provided below.

Are Sweet Potatoes Good Carbs
Anecdotally, some individuals that follow low carb or keto macros most of the time find that adding the occasional sweet potato allows them to achieve their personal health goals. Since they are a whole food, sweet potatoes are also considered better sources of carbs than processed foods with added flour or sugar.
However, the purpose and foundation of a ketogenic diet plan is to restrict carbohydrate intake. With that in mind, sweet potato is not a good carb for keto because it does not fit the limits that keto places on carbohydrate intake although it may work on keto in very small amounts.
Because Its Hard To Follow Keto Can Lead To Yo
Rapid, significant weight loss is a common side effect of the keto diet because of the water losses that occur as carbohydrate stores are depleted, says Clark. In a study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, obese men following a modified version of the ketogenic diet, with high protein and low carbs, lost about 14 pounds in one month, compared with the control group, which lost about 10 pounds on a high-protein, medium-carb diet.
Jalali says people following the diet have the best chance of keeping the weight off if they stay on it long term. And thats not always easy to accomplish. The weight may come back if you go back to your regular eating habits. And regaining weight may lead to other negative effects. Chronic yo-yo dieting appears to increase abdominal fat accumulation and diabetes risk, notes Clark.
Studies have shown that the ability to stick to a diet is more important for long-term success than the type of diet thats followed, says Yawitz. Keto is incredibly restrictive and is particularly tough for those who have frequent social engagements or are prone to carb cravings. The Mediterranean diet allows you to eat carbs, like as many fruits and veggies as you want, along with whole grains. Not to mention, the Mediterranean diet has been linked to a number of other health benefits, including a lower risk of Alzheimers and Parkinsons disease, certain types of cancer, and heart disease, according to the Mayo Clinic.

What Do Roasted Radishes Taste Like
When raw, radishes have a bitter taste. However, when cooked, they taste very similar to potatoes and have a mild flavor like a turnip. When roasted, radishes take the flavor of whichever seasoning you add to it, so the flavor of the radishes will change completely. Add a hint of rosemary, thyme or other fresh herbs to completely transform your low carb potatoes.
Cauliflower Potato And Feta Borek
Recipes make 24 borek
- 350 g red-skinned or other all-purpose potatoes, peeled and cut into 2.5 cm pieces
- 2½ tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
- 400 g cauliflower, trimmed and cut into 1 cm pieces
- 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
- ½ teaspoon ground allspice
Cook the potato in boiling, salted water for 8 minutes or until tender. Drain well.
Meanwhile, heat the oil in a saucepan over medium heat, add the cauliflower and garlic, then cover the pan and cook, stirring occasionally, for 15 minutes or until the cauliflower is very tender. If it threatens to stick, add 12 tablespoons of water. Remove from the heat, add the potato then, using a potato masher, mash together to form a coarse purée. Cool slightly.
Stir the allspice, feta and herbs into the cauliflower mixture, then season to taste and stir in the egg.
Preheat the oven to 180°C and line a large baking tray with parchment paper.
Lay the filo sheets on the bench and cover with a damp dish towel to prevent drying out. Place 1 sheet of pastry on a board and brush it lightly all over with melted butter. Place another sheet on top and brush with butter repeat with another sheet so you have a stack of three layers. Cut the pastry into quarters.
Stir the egg yolk in a bowl with 1 tablespoon water. Brush over the top of each borek, then sprinkle lightly with nigella seeds. Bake for 2025 minutes or until golden and crisp.

Are Sweet Potatoes Lower In Carbs Than White Potatoes
In recent years, sweet potatoes have been popularized as a healthier alternative to traditional white potatoes. Restaurants offer sweet potato fries and baked sweet potato dishes for health-conscious eaters. Does that mean sweet potatoes are lower in carbs?
The answer is no. In fact, the macronutrient breakdown and the carbs between two potato rivals are very similar.
- 100g of white potatoes contain approximately 77 calories, 0.1g of fat, 17g of carbohydrates, 2.2g of fiber, and 2g of protein
- 100g of sweet potatoes contain 86 calories, 0.1g of fat, 20g of carbohydrates, 3.3g of fiber, and 1.6g of protein
Similar to white potatoes, sweet potatoes are starchy vegetables naturally high in carbohydrates and very low in fat. And 100g is not even a whole potato. A standard medium-sized potato weighs around 150 grams and will therefore contain 26 grams of carbs.
With most keto diets recommending less than 30 grams of carbohydrates per day, eating sweet potatoes sounds unrealistic. And no different to white potatoes.
Sweet potatoes are popular for being a healthier alternative, but not due to their lower carb content.
What It Is And Why Youll Love It
Celeriac is you guessed it the root of celery.
Ever walk by the produce section of your local grocery store and notice a spherical brown vegetable with green sprouts coming out of the top and wonder, what the heck is that thing? That would be celery root.
Take the keto quiz
While it may not be the best-looking vegetable, it has an amazing history behind it. Celery root dates back to the 7th century BC growing as wild celery. However, it didnt make its way to modern kitchens until the 1600s.
For a 100 gram serving of celery root you consume just 7 grams of net carbs and 42 total calories. The net carbs in celeriac is higher than the other potato alternatives on this list. However, it remains a favorite starch substitute for its versatility.
