How to Cook a Baked Potato in an Air Fryer

Baked potatoes are the perfect comfort food. Warming, hearty and so delicious! But the one thing I dont like is how darn long an oven-baked potato takes to cook. Baking potatoes the old way can take 45 minutes an hour!

Well not any longer! The method I am going to show you in this recipe includes the quickest way I know to get a perfect baked potato. Think gorgeously crispy skin, and a fork-tender fluffy inside that is just begging to be slathered in butter and devoured.

I also love that you can easily cook a single baked potato in the air fryer. I dont know about you, but before I got my air fryer I never would have turned my oven on and waited for it to heat up etc. etc. just to cook one baked potato!

Air frying is my favorite way to cook potatoes. They cook faster, and the action of cooking with hot air results in a crispier, tastier potato without needing to add a lot of oil. Some of my other favorite air fryer potato recipes are air fryer roasted potatoes, air fryer baby potatoes, air fryer french fries, and air fryer smashed potatoes.

What Goes Good With Air Fryer Breakfast Potatoes

There are so many options. Pair them with my Asparagus Sausage Quiche for breakfast or my Cast-Iron Burgers for a quick fun weeknight dinner.

How about potato nachos? Add chili powder and cumin to the potatoes before cooking. When they have finished in the air fryer, layer on a baking sheet with taco meat and cheese and bake until the cheese is melted. Garnish with salsa, sour cream, and cilantro. Yum!

Make up a batch of breakfast burritos. The potatoes will go great with egg, onions, peppers, cheese, and a touch of salsa, all wrapped in a tortilla.

Instant Pot Vortex Baked Potatoes As A Main Course Or A Side Dish

Most people will serve an air fryer baked potato as a side dish, but I like to use them as a meal as well. You can top your potatoes with all sorts of good things, and if you top them with quite a few items, you might suddenly find that they are a meal in and of themselves.

Try any of these options, or get creative and just put anything that you love on top:

  • Butter and sour cream
  • Loaded with bacon and cheese
  • Chives or green onions
  • Blue cheese dressing, add a dash of buffalo wing sauce for spicy
  • Hot sauce
  • Greek yogurt instead of sour cream
  • Sloppy joe mix

You can, of course, bake your potatoes in the oven but if you have an Air Fryer these are done much faster.

If you have more recipes to prepare you can use your oven for that while you set up your Air Fryer on the counter and bake these potatoes.

Preparing Your Potato For The Air Fryer:

While one of the reasons that I love cooking baked potatoes is because they are super simple and easy, I also love cooking them because the prep time is minimal. Like, mere minutes minimal.

Before I do anything, I always start by scrubbing off and washing the potatoes. I’m a huge fan of eating the potato skins, so having them clean is a must! If you don’t prefer to eat the skins, your next step would be to peel those skins off.

After that potato is sparkly clean, poke some holes in it so that the heat and air can escape. I love to run olive oil all over the outside as well and then cover with my favorite spices.

What Temp Should A Baked Potato Be Cooked At

How to make baked potatoes in an air fryer EASY recipe!

A : We suggest baking potato at F for an houre. Slighter potatoes might require less cooking time. Larger potatoes will take longer. Fully baked potatoes should reach a temperature of 210 degree F internally. If you are using a microwave, you should put the potatoes in their shells and cook them in batches. You can also use an oven preheated to 400 degree f. After the potato is fully cooked, remove it from the oven and let it cool down. Then you need to peel it back and cut it in half. Finally, slice it and serve it. This recipe is for baked large potatoes. Baked small potatoes can easily be made this way. C: If the interior temperature is too high, there is a risk of burning the inside of your potato. To avoid this, lower the temperature slightly.

    What Oil To Use

For cooking jacket potatoes in air fryer, you want to use an oil with a high smoking point so it can withstand the high temperatures of the air fryer without burning.

We recommend using avocado oil, rapeseed oil , olive oil or coconut oil.

You can use cooking spray oil to coat the potato skins or roll them around on a plate with oil on.

Why I Love These Air Fryer Roasted Potatoes

For starters, these air fryer potatoes taste even better than I thought possible. Thats likely due to two things: the way the potatoes are sliced, and the seasoning blend used to flavor them. My instinct has always been to quarter baby Yukons for roasting, but this recipe instructs you to halve them. I was skeptical during my first go-round, but I quickly became a convert. Halving the potatoes gives you a bonus amount of fluffy, creamy goodness underneath the crispy exterior almost like a mini baked potato.

The seasoning blend is also a revelation. Always laser-focused on adding enough salt , I neglected to even consider other seasonings. But this recipe has you add Italian seasoning, garlic powder, and black pepper, and I like to throw in a little Cajun seasoning, too. This combination ensures every potato packs a punch, but still tastes neutral enough to sit next to any main. I also like that you dont need tons of oil just one tablespoon per pound of potatoes.

And lets not ignore the ease. Theres no pre-soaking or par-boiling required. Simply pop em in the air fryer while you prep the rest of dinner. Even the midway flip is just a shake of the basket no tedious turning of individual spuds.

Should I Wrap My Potato In Foil Before Air Frying

There is no need to wrap your potatoes in foil, mainly when baking them in the air fryer. The main reason is that the wrapping of potatoes in foil will hold a lot of moisture that can steam them. The end result will be boiled potatoes and boiled potatoes texture that requires no use of foil in the recipe.

Baking Potato In An Air Fryer Vs Baking Potato In The Oven: Which Is Better

Long before air fryers became popular demand, ovens were literally used for baking all kinds of food. However, ovens have its shortfalls, and now fall below the pecking order when it comes to baking or roasting food.

Baking potato in an air fryer makes it crispier, thoroughly baked, and flavorful. On the other hand, baking in the oven makes the potato unattractive, uneven, and somewhat half-baked. A perfectly baked potato is attractive and light, unlike ovens that leave the inside with an unattractive finish.

Using an air fryer saves time, and makes a whole lot of cooking pretty much more comfortable. Air fryers speed up cooking time by about 20 minutes, which is 2 – 3x faster than ovens. While some ovens are swift in cooking, getting that crispy and delicious taste is nearly impossible, and not the same as using an air fryer.

The best of it all is using an air fryer results in healthier cooking. Less oil is used, which results in less fat and calories.
